carmack is all about the latency, you can search his twitter on this thoughts on reducing latency for the rift. in the gsync talk he also says that his current setup is a 144hz monitor with lightboost enabled, he... knows.

i know he knows, but will it be feasable to the public, thats more what im wondering. cant be cheap having very low latency mini-displays and still sell the occulus rift at a reasonable price, right?

probably not, atleast i have a hard time imagining this ending up anywhere near a "reasonable price", but who knows? the people developing the rift have to be aware of the failures of similar tech in the past.

I stopped using crt for gaming like a month ago and i didn't really notice any difference in my gaming perfomance. I've got a dell p1130 and xl2411t and in all honesty they are really close perfomance wise, both has it's own pluses. LCD got much better contrast, sharpness and bigger panel for easier non-zoomed aim, and these advantages do in fact matter just as much as crt's slightly faster responsiveness and less motion trailing

i've only tried viewsonic vx2268wm and it's noticiably worse than xl2411t, however I wouldn't buy it atm and would wait till first g-sync monitors

They're light years apart in motion blur if you're playing at triple digit frame rates on a LightBoosted XL2411T. Granted, the P1130 may have better colors, but have you tried LightBoost on your XL2411T? That really sets it apart from the P1130. It's pretty obvious when viewing motion tests such as www.testufo.com/photo while quickly turning ON/OFF LightBoost (using ToastyX Strobelight's menus).

LightBoost is now an easy keypress, thanks to ToastyX. No hacks needed...

Yes, that would be correct.

G-Sync = better for variable framerates (no stutters)
LightBoost = superior for maxed 120fps@120Hz (no blur)

G-Sync is bottlenecked by its 144fps max framerate, which still has more motion blur than strobed 120Hz. So that's why we need to combine both, eventually.

It would take a 400fps-to-1000fps G-Sync monitor to eliminate the need for LightBoost, since you can't have low persistence without strobing, unless you fill all the black gaps with unique frames, and that takes many frames (400 to 1000 frames) to fill all the black gaps between LightBoost strobes, to have blurfree strobefree G-Sync as good quality as CRT motion clarity.

Until then, the dream display is a G-Sync monitor that implements variable-rate strobing. There's a variable rate strobe algorithm that can work without showing flicker:

afaik benq uses the same tft panels by au optronics as viewsonic/samsung/lg/dell/acer. almost none of those except lg and samsung actually produce their own panels for anything.

Well it might solve some delays. Current implementation relies on sending frames to the monitor at very specific time intervals, and if that's missed you get more delay. Those intervals are tied into the refresh rate of an LCD monitor which shouldn't be necessary since that is a limitation of CRTs. If the monitor only reacts to when a GPU sends the signal, there is no loss of frames.

reminds me of some documentary i just saw about when filming scarface, they wanted the flash when shooting a gun showing every time they shot. They did it with the trigger being hooked up to the camera and would only fire when shutter was open, that way they got the flash every time.

but I guess that's more in the terms of vsync where the gun waits for the camera instead of the other way around which seems to be how vsync works.

it looks like they're developing their own anti-blur lightboost functionality to it but its currently either gsync or lightboost. carmack talks about how they can combine the two in some vid, maybe that will come later in development.

I kind of doubt that it will be of any great benefit to say, QL players since most of them play without any frame drops, or at least no frame drops below the refresh rate of the display.

In general though it's a nice tech. It's just that it only works through DisplayPort, which only the most recent graphics cards would have, and the most recent displays would support.

It's nice because now the tearing problem can be eliminated via a non-vsync method, one that has no stutter or additional input latency.

Sadly the demo for this that's shown all over the net is almost always in a 30 fps stream, probably recorded by a camera that's only 30 fps. Whereas to be seen it really needs at least 60.

Oh well, we're still living in an idiocracy when it comes to framerates.

The good news is that Quake Live users get thrown a bone -- there's the improved better-than-LightBoost strobe mode included in G-SYNC monitors.

high efficiency API, allowing direct access to hardware < 400$ 24" TN monitor that needs a keppler card in order to sugar-coat your frame rate drops so that 40fps will LOOK like 60 but the mouse response will STILL tell you otherwise.

Maybe this will benefit casual gaming when it will come to larger displays, for a example I was playing some sleeping dogs these days, had the main pc connected to my 40" HDTV in the living room with a 5M mini hdmi - hdmi cable + steam big picture mode + a spare xbox 360 controller, it was practically like playing on a console !

I was using a mix of medium-high settings, vsync ON triple buffering ON and a 58fps cap, i got very frequent drops to 40-42fps while driving and you could notice even with fraps off, so maybe a g-sync display would be very helpful in that case, of course then i would have to upgrade my gtx480 to something more recent because nvidia is greedy AND stupid !

For FPSs it's a whole different story, i'd rather turn down a few settings and disable AA than try to shoot something at 40 sugar-coated-frames-per-second

i would like to see demo at 120hz CRT, vsynced, gsync whatever, side by side with a 60hz LCD.

this is the best thing since sliced bread, unless they somehow fail on the actual implementation. I have faith in nvidia though.

Btw it's good for video playback too (such as 24fps or 48fps films on a 60hz display) so it's actually good for everyone including non-gamers and people with slow computers - ofc for now it's aimed mostly at enthusiast gamers but that should quickly change.

stupid question, but whats tearing? I've played without Vsync (no fps cap) in almost all my games and I haven't experienced this yet.

Why exactly is tearing caused? It seems in that link it happens at really low fps's or if your fps spikes. I play games that I get like 400 fps in. I guess so that doesn't really cause tearing?

almost everyone can notice tearing at low fps.
quakers have tearing immunity due high fps and years of addiction.
