ddk and and ischju spoke about farm animals on a stream 4 months ago, and he also spoke about a book, if my memory is correct, it was about a kid who entered chess tournaments and who wanted to go pro (something like that) but can anybody remember what the actual book was called. thankyou. (to remind you about the stuff [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUCPoJZscPM / http://www.twitch.tv/faceittv/c/2396724 / http://www.twitch.tv/faceittv/c/2396710 ] ill be greatful if you guys can remind me what the book is called, (i think it MIGHT be Enders game, im unsure) thankyou.
"Enders Game" was mentionned by Thorin some weeks ago. It's a military Sci-Fi about a boy, who ought to be a perfect soldier and commander. Maybe you mean the other novel, mentionned by DDK and Thorin: "The Player of Games". The two novels seem to have some general reflections on how to develop a competitive mindset and how to deal with pressure situations and such, at least in "Enders Game" its true, but I didn't read "The Player of Games". But I think it could very well be it, because it's about a society in which differnet games play an important role to determine ones status in the society. The main character then is send out to an important Game-Tournament to compete for its people or smth. like that, in order to do so he has to quickly adapt to new situations since he does not know the complex rules in the beginning and he also has to choose situation when to be agressive but when not to be agressive. I'm talking it.
It was the Summer Cup #8: www.twitch.tv/faceittv/b/458323873
at around 05:05 they talk about some books, but I think not the one mentionned above, and its not the only spot where they talk about books.
yes yes yes i remember a little bit more but that lin kyou get me, and 05:05 it says 24 minutes to it goes live :O but yh i want to buy that book, but i want the exact 1 with the correct title/book :)
my bad it is 05:05:00 it is roughly about 5 hours in the cast. But As I said at that point the talk about some books, but it is not the spot I was looking for. You'll have to look yourself.
No, Enders Game is the military story. But both are about mindset. But Enders Game is probably more about characterisitcs of a good leader and reflections about how to lead, therefore it was once on the recommended reading list of the US Marine Corps.
I didn't read The Player of Games, but it yes it should cover the mindset topics aswell, but without the leader-aspect. And yes, it is the book in the link by Ian Banks.
THere is a third book especially about how to learn new things very effectively and quick, but this would not be a novel, but rather practical advices.
Having read them all, the bulk of The Player of Games is set on one planet, and doesn't impact on the other at all imo, other than demonstrating just how smart The Minds are (in their predictions).
