Chennai is GMT + 5:30

CET is GMT + 1, 4.5 hours earlier than Chennai.

Game starts at 3 pm there, so it would be at 10:30 AM CET.

Yep, and tomorrow is a rest day.

Hopefully they'll crank up the action soon. The Anand Gelfand match went pretty slow until the later games, but it was kind of a boring match in general.

I'm pissed it's only twelve games. It'll probably have a negative impact on risk-taking too.

Rather surprising first game by Carlsen - you'd think he would have prepared better for the variation Anand used.

With regards to commentary, I wish they mixed the two IMs with the two GMs. I love Trent, but he works better with a GM next to him (like Short during the Candidates). Yesterday Tania and him suggested a move (13. Nxd5) for Carlsen that was immediately dismissed by Polgar and Ramesh (in favor of 13. Qb3, which Carlsen did play) as soon as they replaced them.

Iagree, liability is the name od the game nowadays. I stopped playing chess after 10 years of it day in and out. Just because of the styles people immulate . Now its not per se the 'best' that wins anymore. Who can plus back the best till human makes inevitable mistake. Almost like Captain Hindsight from south park :)

there is a ton of better players that could do the job, i can't think of a single good reason why she's on it, besides explaining how castling works (...)

Susan is still a GM (not wgm!) rated 2577 even if she hasn't competed in some time.

She also broke the world record for a simul in 2004 by playing 326 opponents and scoring 99.03%. See here for info on that.

This means she has a very strong understanding of the game, both in terms of experience with weaker players, and against strong international players.

She's also a coach/trainer/arbiter/reporter and heavily involved in the chess world.

She has the perfect qualifications for something like this. So that's why she's there.

That being said I'm not a fan of her accent, or her casting personally so I do get where you're coming from. She tends towards more basic stuff, but keep in mind that with so many people watching, more viewers are likely to be novices.

I'm a bigger fan of Nigel Short as a caster, or Peter Svidler, and plenty of others.

The official site seems to focus more on a casual / novice audience.

For higher quality commentary (by gm's) go to playchess or icc, unfortunately those are not free.

about time ... anand just wasn't a good world champion in the last 2-3 years, he is not performing well in tournaments, etc., kramnik wasn't a good world champion, either just holding to his title preventing a rematch to kasparov ... now with carlsen, the chess world has again a champion that wins also tournaments, a real no. 1 player

Anand was good champion. He did what he had to to do to retain in crown, and that no player, until now, could wrestle the championship away from him speaks volumes. The computer-age of chess has changed the game.

he was a worthy champion maybe from 2008 to 2010,
the match vs. Gelfand in 2012 was already a joke, he was already out of the top 5 back then ...

which computer age do you mean? kasparov was already on of the first players in the 80s to use electronic databases ...
computers were used to analyze positions already in the mid 90s

The king Anand is naked.

The wonder boy made it clear for everyone.
Now everybody could see it.

And you know what? He deserves such a respect.

Playing at such high level at that age, much older than Kasparov was when he retired and Garry left the scene when it wasn't so computer-heavy and the preparation and the game itself were incomparable to nowadays battles with crazy Houdini studs.

Yes, Vishy was a shadow of himself last four years but maybehe kept sitting on the throne only to pass it to somebody that worths it as much as Magnus does.

It's the end of era, as Nigel Short said.

does anyone know any good, free, online apps for android?
ICC allows you to play for a limited time, same thing for playchess.com (which is weird, as i'm able to login as a guest from the laptop)

don't care about having rated games, only about being able to set a timelimit and enough players for late night games
