Running windows 8 (not 8.1) and I'm completely fine with it.
It's just a matter of getting used to it, though the process is not particularily hard. I actually appreciate the ability to access all my important tools by hitting the windows key (no start menu needed).

However, after using this for 4 months or something like that I still havent found out how to shut down the pc without a keyboard shortcut.

- You don't need to install anything, standard desktop interface is fine, standard win+x/mouse2 menu is even better than start menu imho. As for metro I haven't really used a single metro app since i installed win8 in summer 2012 and in 8.1 you can log into Desktop mode automatically. So metro start menu is only there to find some rare app you don't use too often.
- No I'm not missing anything from win7 and some things are much better here, usability is not really any worse
- Compatibility is fine, newer titles even work faster(i.e latest bf4 beta was like 20fps higher here)
- Why not if it's free(same for me), it's not any worse than win7

I've been running Windows 8 since release due to work related issues. Using Classic Shell and that's about it. No problems with any games/programs at all.

Only thing I miss is HIDUSBF not working in windows 8/8.1 - which means means I can't use my WMO/3.0 @ 500hz (125hz blows). Using Zowie FK now and it just doesn't feel the same. I'd give my left nut to get my WMO-aim back :*(

Sort of OT but is there a way to make a mouse less responsive? I know mouseacceloffset delays how soon the accel kicks in but even so with 0 accel my Zowie FK is too responsive. It tracks flawlessly but picks up even the smallest movements making it less forgiving and it gives the mouse a somewhat nervous feeling to it. Any ideas? Accelpower ~ 1?

I'm running it at 450 DPI and it doesn't get better than that. I'm still thinking some doses of mouseaccelpower might be a way of doing it. It does help a bit but it just doesn't feel 'right'. It's more like i'm reproducing the kinzu accel curve.

i dont know if it works for w8 but for XP i change usb pooling rate by editing the windows system usbport file with hexadecimal editor (extremly easy to do) and it is the best way to do it.

That's exactly HIDUSBF does although it does with a GUI. For some reason the usbport.sys in Windows 8 isn't compatible with the tool. A hexadecimal editor might still be able to open it up and change the polling value but I just haven't invested time in doing it. Perhaps someone else knows more?

I recommend setting a very low value for this setting; for example, stermy uses a value of 0.02 or 0.03, try a value like that.
Only other option would be m_filter.

Thanks but i've played around with that command earlier but didn't really like it. Game feels disconnected/delayed more then mouse being less responsive. I know that strenx and stermy uses this (stermy only for shaft and rail, i think). I guess a combination of a bunch of settings is what eventually will solve this. Perhaps running 450dpi on a higher resolution might be an option.

Been using 8 for well over a year now, I think. Ages, anyway.

No compatibility or instability issues whatsoever.

For productivity, I really like the way the interface formerly known as Metro allows me to group programs by category (example.

The search takes a bit getting used to. In 7, as you typed your search term, you were returned results, all neatly grouped as files, applications, settings, etc. In 8, once you enter the search term, you need to select the category to refine your results, manually. Check the right side of the screen for the search term "a". Learn the keyboard shortcuts to search by category, if you are used to searching for Control Panel settings and such. They are WIN+Q (apps), WIN+W (settings) and WIN+F (files).

There are two registry hacks I particularly recommend, one for the Charms Bar (bar on the right) and one for the Switcher (bar on left). I highly recommend you use both hacks to disable both bars.

The Switcher is somewhat of the ALT+TAB interface used only for modern apps, in my opinion useless functionality. Enabling the hack completely disables the switcher.

The Charms Bar is far more useful, as it contains shortcuts to the shut down menu, personalisation options and control panel, but as everything can be accessed by keyboard shortcuts, the constant mouse annoyance does not warrant having it pop up every time you are near the right side of the screen, especially when trying to close a maximised window.

The hack disables the bar partially. It no longer comes up when you move your mouse to the top right of the screen (working with maximised/right-aligned windows is possible again). You can bring the bar up by moving your mouse to the right top corner and swiping down, or pressing WIN+C. You get to keep the function with no user interface annoyance.

WIN+X, use it. It's like right-clicking the start button.

If you will use software like Start is back, ClassicShell or Start8, always check if it will run in the background as a service/process. If I remember correctly, Start is back does not, so you get to keep your computer resources.

For gaming, the biggest flaw with Win8 was (and still may be, I haven't checked in months) the inability to monitor the DPC latency. If you are interested in keeping an eye on the overall health of your machine, DPC latency monitors for Win7 are not forward compatible with Win8.

Also, Tek Syndicate have done two tutorial videos for those who are about to, or just have transitioned into Win8. Things like power options *coughCITYYcoughcough<3<3* and other things. Start button software is also covered if you want the button/menu back.

Pretty much unplayable, you can play for a bit but it gets infuriating and I give up. I'd say lag every 10 secs or so. Microsoft needs to step it up were gamers are concerned but like they give a fuck about such a small market share.

I recently bought a new laptop with win 8 on it, and I hate it. I hated win 7 too, but I absolutely despise win 8. At least in win 7 you could set it to win 98 style. In win 8 there's not even a start menu, but there are these fucking tiles. And yeah you can download a start menu, or old windows style, but why do I need to download them? Why the fuck is Microsoft taking them away?
