i think its ok to not seed k1llsen top, with his activity until now in mind (non) no doubt tho that he can get back in grate shape within the remaining time and pull some upsets there :P
im more suprised to still see cooller there in top seed tbh. i know his lan performance is always on a higher level but if recent performances would matter, he'd surely not be in there instead of spart1e

I basically agree with the seedings; k1llsen is still relatively inactive, and is 0-5 on sinister (on his main account anyways) 1 week before the tournament. hopefully he and everyone else can get in top shape and learn all the maps by then.

(also watching the group drawings right now! they're going to assign all the top seeds at the end live stream)

Tried to get p0ni some sponsorship but nobody is paying to go DH to play quake (and I mean nobody).

With 8-man group lower seed people will have at least 7 games to play. It also provides a better competition - less random dropouts because of some one unlucky match.

I would just prefer a better way to equalise groups, so there wouldn't be possible "death" or "ez" groups.

that's why i'm balbbering about seeding top players as top high and top low, same in the high seedings. A group like that it'd be retarded and getting a group with 2 between Rapha, Evil and Cypher and 2 between K1llsen, Spart1e and Fraze is a lot easier to occur than most people think

top seed pool and high seed pool should be divided in 2 x 2x4 imho. you can leave the mid and low cause it's irrelevant.

1-4 from the top seed should be playing with 5-8 from the high seed pool and vice versa - in the group stage. otherwise there's a huge chance for a random draw fuckup where it's impossible for 4 out of 8 best players to reach playoffs.

i.e. cypher rapha k1llsen spartie = only 2 go to playoffs

If Cooller just beat Cypher (arguably a friendly online match so it doesn't mean much), then I'm not too sure if it holds up to say that k1llsen > Cooller (using czm's 'transitive relation' theory). We all know Cypher's form is looking good right now, and k1llsen has been out of it for some time. Spart1e also not looking on his best form right now, perhaps by that time he'll have trained some more. Maybe fraze, but we can't tell yet.. SOO what does that mean for the seedings?...

Depending on the group I could see cooller even drop out before the RO16. Pick-Pick system combined with the new maps (and fast maps like toxicity) could screw him over since he avoided the new maps in all tournaments I can think of by dropping them.

That is why you should have some idea why someone MIGHT seed Fraze higher than Cooller..

It's not as clean cut as you make it out to be.

Cooller is very often literally fucking around and that's why his ELO is lower.

What makes you think your ELO is EVERYTHING.

"Below Cypher, agent, ash, p0ni, baksteen" LOL. Yes, only below in ELO. He can and has beaten best players in tournaments. What matters in this case is that the people that determine the seeding are confident he can perform well and win the tournament. And I agree that he has at least equal chance as Fraze and considering his previous achievements he deserves to be seeded top.

I don't really think it counts when he loses to some 1400 pub when he's obviously not even trying or whatever.

The fact of the matter is that there are more than 8 players that are deserving of the top seed position. Fraze, K1llsen, dem0n, spart1e could all have been in there as well.

I as it stands now is a good representation, we could debate forever as to who should be top seed and who should be high seed.

You speak the truth, and I am a Cooller fanboy. So what. I like his play style. It's fucking interesting to watch.

But I'm tired of this ELO shit being the biggest determining factor to seeding, according to sirax.
This is not chess. Here you have ragequits, connection problems, disconnects even, people often play just for fun, get easily distracted especially when practicing from home.

According to sirax, Cooller is most debatable because of ELO only. Oh and because he lost 3-1 in practice match. Big deal.

I think it was a tough decision between k1llsen and cooller with regards to top seed and I'm sure if you put them together head to head, I'd put money on cooller coming out on top more often than not. Thus the decision... Everyone else in top seed deserves such for their recent performances. k1llsen has also been inactive a very long time.

Well, imo seedings shouldn't be done only on recent performances let alone based on a view showmatches online. No offence to fazz but k1llsen is a tad bit stronger. Tho you could argue that he deserved it but then you could also argue about spartie etc.
Imo another weird seeding is matrox. He should be in top seeding.

Guess in the end it is hard to be objective when it comes to seedings.

Thanks for doing qlranks but really stfu about elo. It is meaningless and what you suggest doesn't work very well. Something very similar was done in TSL 2 for brood war back in the day.

It was mostly alright but it had a few issues and was abused- win trading. It rewards more the activity rather than talent (implying you would do a hard reset so everyone starts from equal footing, which is another obvious problem). With latency issues it can segregate the players making finding games in some regions harder and making elo scores less meaningful.

Also it limits the freedom on how to prepare for your matches. Do you want to play mostly little weaker players the very best, or train entirely with an alt or just /abort every game to keep your opponents in the dark?

It's sub-optimal.

I wish there was an elo rating only calculated from official/broadcasted games faceit/125fps/lans and special evnets.

Well I disagree and the guy who made those seeds seems to have done a very good job and there are maybe a couple of questionable decisions. Even those will be washed out by the 4x8 groups and the top 4 seeds from each group will have everything put into place.

The official/broadcasted games is something I have had on my mind for a very long time now but never got the time to work on. The idea is pretty much a rip off what Teamliquid does with the TLPD. It's a database of all the matches that matter with links to vods. I think it would be an amazing resource for quake players. You would have a more meaningful Elo, without anyone being able to say that his bro plays on it, clarity of how active a player is and easy way for fanboys to catch up with their favorite player matches. However, right now I dont have the time to dedicate for it.

Yea I don't know why people are crying about cooller being top seed, on LAN (or otherwise) he def can handle that spot. I just saw him beat Cypher like an hour ago (qlranks).

Either way, these seeds must have been damn hard to decide, every player all the way down to mid seeds is really good and stands a chance at this.

Er...that's why they're put in top seed.

So basically, you're saying you want an upset AND you want admins to see the future and put that underdog player in top seed in place of the REAL top seed that they will apparently beat (according to admins' crystal ball).

Admins did a great job so far of organizing a bunch really, really good players into seed groups to make for a reasonably fair and exciting tournament. There's always room for adjustment, but I think it's gonna be amazing just as things stand.

So are the ppl that are in. Jewro applied months ago and he has proven himself vs very good players. and hes not in. Just because High - Very high dropped out it doesnt mean that mid players should be in D:

Dont wanna discredit the replacements, I'm sure they're decent, but that's the first thing I thought as well... we knew there would be some dropouts (such as poni and strenx -- P.S. strenx wtf, retiring at 22? so like gamers never learn from each other's noob mistakes?), but was hoping for some even-tiered replacements. ash, nhd, czm to name a few obvious names missing... as mentioned, jewro, and what about chance/dkt/zero4...? Hi ;d Very strange seeding for me i think. Ph4ntom and Detrony the top seed and I am in mid. Of course, not to put the skills of them but they did not play in most tournaments 125fps or faceits or even DH or smth. Better elo than me is not a good choice at this point i think. fazz is good. And as mentioned countless times before, it's super hard to seed all these players and it is literally impossible to make everyone happy. But also - ultimately it all comes down to performance on the day of the event.

ualaskij has played 1.3 months on his account - I have played 3.2 months on my 2 accounts combined.
ualaskiy has played 5,397 matches - I have played 13,454 matches on my accounts.
ualaskij registered on esr: 22 Jan 2013 - I registered 13 Feb 2010.

I don't play duel very much (69 matches played on that account with currently 1219 elo lol) because it takes more mental energy than other game modes and when I come home from work I just want easy fun so I play CA at which I have a higher elo than uaLaskij, but he doesn't play much CA so not really fair to compare.

Just because I'm not such a pro duel player as ualaskij doesn't mean I'm not qualified to have an opinion. I'm happy for everyone to disagree with my opinions - that will make it all the more fun to see the results at DHW. And in the extremely unlikely event that Fazz wins - I will acknowledge how wise ualaskij was :D

But I love duel and I used to be very competitive in other FPS games years ago when I was younger, so I love nothing more than to sit back with an ice cold beer most evenings and watch 125fps, Faceit, LevelUp etc on a 40" widescreen TV with my feet up.

They are comming to eu, they should be respected and respectfull so need we to put them into mid seed.
Put matrox and bpatela in high. Matrox was quite high in last dh's, he was always high seeded, and now hes lowered becouse of African players.
Also bpatela and gienon does great job lately.

Well in my defence I am playing on a laptop with an internet connection shared by 5 other people. So I have been mostly jamming again stphn and the occasional n00b, then CA when I'm bored.

I probably wont get back into any serious quake any time soon, but I reckon I could take on 1700+ ELO dudes if I had a proper set up.

To be honest phantom and don't get me wrong, but I have to go with sting here. I am really looking forward to seeing you and seeing you play there and get to meet and greet and stuff so dont hate me on there. There's a good chance that you might actually do great but I think gienon has been top notch lately as I've said in the recent past on several occasions, and he's been able to show himself recently (thats something thats at a disadvantage for you obviously ;s) playing a lot of duel cups here and there and showing remarkable signs of duelling abilities.

If I was in gienon's shoes right now I would not understand beeing seeded a step behind both of the south africans. Matrox's seed is also very debatable in that matter. He's been somewhat underperforming lately and he was not convincing at all yesterday during the road to dreamhack faceit so I understand that he's been called a lower seed than we'd expect from him if he was at his best.

Fraze right now, and only because he's been able to show himself last january/februari in europe, deserves a high seed spot. Although definetly not a top seed stop in my opinion as has been mentioned above somewhere.

Now now this is all debatable and shit, and I do hope for you that sting and I were all wrong. But if you're indeed deserving of a high seed pot, then it doesn't matter because even if you're on a midtier seed you'd probably beat the other high seed players.

I think in the end when you have 4 seeds, it doesn't really matter to be one tier below or above what the reality really is. I think you catch my point ;).

tl;dr: I think gienon/matrox should be high seed because of the fact they've proven to be capable of taking maps from some of the topseed players, which is something you are yet to prove. It's just unfortunate you can not play in Europe... ;)

Malta is not close to South Africa unfortunately, we are right at the bottom :(

I ping 170 to Holland, so if a server was setup in like, Nigeria, it's possible that we could have servers where people from the EU and SA both ping 85. Of course, the servers would probably be empty most of the time, since no one would want to play at that ping regularly... still, that would be good enough for friendlies... hmmm.

Unfortunately I just checked pings to Nigeria, and they are pretty shit from SA, which I find surprising as their should be a giant pipe all the way up the east coast of africa, and that was the best bet of getting a server up between Europe and SA.

I can guarantee you right now that camma is the strongest player in the middle tier, yet noone will throw his name around, cause they dont know his level (which is why I myself am wondering why BOTH of the south africans have been put into high and NOT camma also) The seedings although not exactly perfect are ok enough :P If matrox or any player is good enough to have a higher level seedings, then they will prove that unless they get put in a group of death, which would just be unfortunate :P So in fact the seedings wont even matter really unless the groups are divided unfairly

Best way to do that is to individually rank each player then go with 1/8/9/16 etc etc so that the groups are relatively even so no group is signifcantly harder than others, i posted about it below!

Nah BS, id only played against guys from Aus, and that didnt mean that i was below mediocre guys, way i see it, if they had warranted a spot in top or high seeds, it would have been through performance in previous lans, so if they only ever beat guys who are bads, then lose to the same guys every single LAN, you are better off putting unknown above them just in case the unknown are better to give them a better shot, rather than giving a good shot to guys who have already proved to be average.

The skill is driven up over time though. Although I would probably agree that there are only about 20 - 40 (I think your estimate is a bit low actually, duel is being played quite a lot now) players playing duel regularly NOW, that is not the total amount of players over time.

Every year the new active players will build upon the strats used by the older active players, which the older active players got by playing against the now inactive players.

If you consider that 2 of the best players that SA ever produced (Shase & Detrony) both started playing after the old school mostly stopped playing, you can see that they didn't get their skills just from playing the active community, but what that community has accumulated over time.

The total amount of decent duelers in SA over the last 13 years is probably around 500, or more i would guess, pity we don't have stats.

Ph4ntom is an old school player, he has actual big tournament experience (ESWC's, WCG etc etc), where he beat many big names back then.

How much LAN experience does Fraze have? If anything I would say you could balance them out and find they are more or less on par in terms of where they can be seeded (Fraze having the more recent rankings against the big EU players, but not so much in a big competition setting, Ph4ntom not having the current EU ranking, but has proven himself on LAN against top internationals many a time).

I would actually love to see a game between Fraze and Ph4ntom at DHW. I reckon Fraze has a better chance on maps like tox, hub, cure and ph4ntom will kill him on dm13 and ztn and possibly t7.

Honestly, arguing over the seeds is probably getting too much attention as is. In the end, I really don't care as I'm not the one participating or fortunate enough to be there but when you have ACTUAL participants having an issue (and with good reason), there should definitely be some discussion. I understand SA players wanting to prove that they're good players and it's unfortunate that, like Australians, you don't have the means to really do it.

However, if we were just looking at factual data in the realm of Quake Live, there is no argument, reasoning or logic to put Ph4ntom (and especially Detrony) in High Seed. There just isn't.

I'm honestly shocked people are arguing that. It isn't an insult on their Quake skills, it's the realization that they are in the unfortunate position of having to PROVE themselves from the BOTTOM. Like almost any player has to do regardless.

I honestly did not expect to be put into high seed and thought I'd be fortunate to get mid seed. As others have already pointed out, seeds do not really matter as the more pressing matter is the groups drawn. Let's rather wait and hope that groups are as even as possible. These are also big groups and everyone has more than enough opponents to prove themselves against.

So please, drop it now as I believe you and many others are really putting way too much thought into this. Gaming at this stature is meant to be enjoyable, fun and amazing to both participants and fans. Not one huge flame session at admins organizing the most intriguing quake tournament ever. Blaze and his team has done a tremendous job thus far and I personally know what it takes to run a successful event. Just remember that you can in no way ever please everyone.

Also you can't really compare chess to Quake. Chess requires memorization of opening variations for example, something that does indeed require just study.

You can compare chess to quake, very easily actually.
I was without an internet connection for a few years and the only time I got to play was at the occasional LAN, so watching demos and running around maps to improve movement helped keep quake fresh.

I think seeds are actually fine.

There will always be some sort of style clashes and people who think player X belongs to top and player Y belongs to high seed, but overall I think it's pretty accurate, although there are a few questionable top seeded players who would fit better in high seed.

Also i think the best way to make groups is to seed the players in order of skill ie 1,2,3,4 etc then in a group have 1/8/9/16/17/24/25/32 etc

how did you calculate the seeds blaze? was it ranking points from tournaments, matches between pros, elo? for instance ronnie o'sullivan left snooker for 6+ months, came back after dropping out of the top 16 due to not earning enough ranking points and had to start from the first round. still won the world championship. I don't know for sure but has tox even been active? is he and others there on merit, form or what? only curious because I think a world rankings site for quake pros using a proper system would be an interesting addition.

My guess is he sits down with a bunch of info about all the players (tourney rankings, match history, ELO, etc.) and then spends hours and hours and hours trying different combinations, making adjustments, thinking through the possible outcomes, and then throwing it all in the garbage and starting over. Then, after he just about loses his mind and decides he's done absolutely the best he can, he releases seeds to the QL community and hunkers down for the shit-storm that is ESR judgement on his "incorrect" seedings.

While there are always more adjustments that could be made, I'm confident the best effort was put into seeds, so all the "these seeds suck / are wrong / ur gay" comments are pretty much pointless, especially considering SEEDS ARE ALREADY DONE.

Thanks to all DH admins and contributors for preparing what looks to be a fucking amazing tourney!!

like you said you're never going to please everyone. nearly everything blaze and the dh team have done so far has come back with critisim, but also with high praise. on the flip side I think this criticism has infact improved the quality of the tournament, but only because blaze has been willing to listen to the community. i'm not suggesting he should change the seedings of course.

Oh that looks bad. There are no '240hz' gaming monitors, especially not VA panels. A quick google says its some way of strobing, but all in all they will be a tiny bit slower than the current 120hz panels. Its simply not TN. Not the brightest idea to pick some dodgy new tech from a lesser known company to supply the monitors, lol.

BUT, it beats 60hz at least :)

edit, might not be as bad as i thought. upside is clearer picture, downside is a few ms worse input lag in total, but not in a way itl be noticable i think. only 120hz should be used though, 240 adds unwanted input lag, after reading the entire article ;_;

Just talk with blaze and go! There is a chance someone drop at the last moment+it's cool event anyway/a lot of old friends/rivals there. Just play 1 hour a day for two weeks and your shape will be good enough to even aim for top8/top16(with means that thanks to esr community you will end up winning money!). DO IT!

no no no. esr doesnt want fresh talents. esr wants to flame at everything they can.

ppl wanted aircontrol mode, when pql was released it got flamed because its not 1:1 cpm.

ppl want new players - when they get it they flame them for being fat or something.

ppl want new maps - they get flamed and not played at all

p.s. After the Strenx thing and no Pavel and then a few other cancellations, I think there is some anxiety about "the wheels coming off" this incredible lineup of international competition; but I think we passed over that possibility, hopefully.

Matrox is great player, he can play on high seed level. But something is happen with him in last few monthes. He didn't show decent level of the game which he definetely can. And today, lets be honest, look vod of this game, cooller played really bad. When i've saw this i decided that it will be easy 3-0 for matrox. And what we saw? They both played on 1500 ELO level. I know that guys like cooller will improve extremely their performance on LAN. But i'm not sure that this will be the same with matrox. He needs to get top shape now and hold it till the end of DH.
What's wrong with him? Just kick his ass, force him to train harder. Let he is not thinking about this bullshit like seedings and other stuff. We all want him to go at DH and kicked some ass.

Mmm yes and no.
I hate hub and cure. They are the kind of maps that make me want to stop playing duel. I can deal with praccing 1 map if it would be drop drop 'til 5 maps remain. Now I have to pracc both.

+ Ive had issues IRL so it really demotivated, kinda what strenx is going through now

Wish Garpy or Jibo would be able to fill the blanks.

Also wtf does fat not just play for fun these days. Looking back over the years it is quite sad that we ever took it so seriously that players should quit while they are ahead when they are still relatively young. All to protect some bloody reputation which on reflection is not in the smallest way that important to the greater scheme of things.

Anyway I am very excited about this event, and I hope we will continue to see more events like this. And I wish some of the oldschool players will just play even if it is just for the shits and giggles. Prozac, Zamuz, fox, fat, Jibo, Z4, Chaotics, Socrates etc etc

Maybe I am too #36, but missing the good ol 2002-2003 players :)

Anyway spraying everywhere already.

Its better if they let foreigners who are ready to pay for travel play in the tournament.

I can just grab the bus and im there in 15 minutes and I have been lazy as fuck so it would be all down to improvisation if I got in.

Its different for the americans and the europeans. They attend these tournaments all the time and play against these players all the time. I'm not going to Europe to get eliminated by my brother - thats fucking retarded, I'm sure the south africans would feel the same.

ps to avoid the group of death you should seed the seeds into halves inside each seed bracket and then make groups accordingly, for example

top 4: rapha cypher dahang evil

next 4: avek cooller tox fazz

next 4: demon spartie fraze killsen etc etc

otherwise one group could be

fraze killsen cypher rapha whilst another could be tox fazz and any two of the bottom four high seeds - we all know which group we'd rather be in.

Yeah they have but the only chance I see for them is either vs k1llsen or spart1e. Dahang and cypher are two out of the top 4 players atm. I would be suprised if either of them can even take a map vs them. Maybe cypher as he tends to be more relaxed in groupstages but his current shape makes this very unlikely :P

My predictions:

A: Tox, Fraze, Fazz, Demon
B: Dahang, Killsen, Cypher, Spartie (I would like Camma to upset though)
C: Avek, Evil, Detrony, Sting
D: Ph4ntom, Rapha, Cooller, Matrox

D is an interesting one, I might be being optimistic, but I think there will be many factors in Ph4ntom's favour in the group stages. Rapha and Cooller are known to be weak in the group stages, they have never played P4, and P4 has something to prove.

I seriously seriously cannot wait to watch these games! Supporting southern hemisphere all the way!

Detrony is a funny one because I don't really know how strong he is because I haven't played him much, he also got good when I wasn't around. From watching him, I don't think he plays carefully enough, however his movement and aim is sick, I don't think he will have close games, he will either win or lose. Then again he has really picked up on the amount of games he is playing, and he is starting to take more games from P4 than he was last week. Hopefully the both of them will be fully prepared.

I am not familar with Geinon either, so couldn't say.

If you look at predictions (e.g. tbone's above) it's still more than likely that only top and high seeds will qualify from the groups - which kinda shows that the seeding was done well. That being said, Detrony could have quite a tough time in the Polish group and Ph4ntom has put quite a lot of pressure on himself by talking up his game so much. Still back him to perform and do well. It will be interesting to see if the 3rd/4th place finishers from group B, the group of death, will be able to beat some 1st/2nd place finishers from the other groups in the playoffs :)

some sweet repeats of old finals even in groupstage: cypher-dahang, cooller-rapha...just looks incredible!

and it goes to show that maybe seedings weren't so bad after all!

my take even if a bit outdated because i hadn't any time to check the mid\low guys form and improvements:

Group A is the more interesting in terms of who'll actually get throu for me. Expect many good games but few great one in term of skill shown.
Dem3n beware, group is harder than you think, expecially if you get to play bretella late when he's starting to get more used to the pressure of the stage and the lan feeling. Sothis may actually make you retire, even if it looks like you have some kind of good matchup vs Fraze. Anyway I hope sothis is aware that the low and mid seeds will bring their best game against him. So if he wants to get to the playoffs don't let your guard down.

Group B... I expect Dahang to school the other 3 top seeds with some true QL and brane skills :D and eventually top the group. Honestly it's a bit disappointing to me that cypher, Spart1e and K1llsen are in the same group. I feel like they know eachother a bit too much and plus we kinda know how the games between those 3 guys go (not in terms of results but game played).
I feel sorry for camma and kronic tho. From 1 side Camma'll be really tested, and if his skillset is somewhere near first Fraze he may actually upset the fuck out of the 4 top seeds. From the other side he has nearly no hope to pass the group.
K1llsen feels really confident he'll get his game going for the event, I hope he won't use too much of his motivation and focus on the group-stages just to make the point he should've been a top seed. We know you deserved it, K1llsen, your goal is winning it all, not just your group!!

Group PL. Who'll end up top2 is pretty clear, who'll top the group isn't. CAN'T WAIT to see Av3k adapt his game to Evil's on lan!
Sting vs Detrony'll be fun for the esr drama, also we'll see if it's true that "watching them (ZAs) feels like watching Etty" (c) Twister. And beware, because if Etty actually has never played on a 120hz monitor and gets the superpower it usually gives you, this is gonna be fun :D. Guys remember when playing Gaynon be aware of the fact he'll try some batshit crazy stuff just to get the 100$ of the best frag award. When up or down 15 frags just start camping like feggets.

Group D: Some cool narratives. Rapha Cooller is not something new whatsoever, but Cooller has changed. Don't know if Twister got his shit together lately or what. Matr0x's presence here maybe makes the group a bit more appealing. Ph4ntom is the storyline to follow here guys, can't wait to see him beat Twister and Matr0x and get really tested by the two masterminds. eZ pZ group for the two top players who usually take the groupstages in their own way. Hope Cooller doesn't win vs Rapha so he'll gain more motivaiton out of that match and won't give Rapha too much infos on his new habits. Will no_il hold W 100% of the times in all his 7 games? Hard to tell.

Overall having a Strenx and a P0ni around would have been a lot more fun because the spots for the playoffs would've been really few then ;D

Go Aussies!!!!!!!!!!!! I really hope Fraze/Camma own, but I would also like to see Cooller perform exceptionally well.

twister sucks, no style, no brain. I can clearly see what he plans to do in his games and it's always so obvious and nearly never works out. He only wins with aim and plays that don't look interesting.

Only 1 time have I seen him play differently which was vs cypher on furiosheights during a faceit or something.

After that he just stagnates.
