The effective difference between aborting and forfeiting is just statistics. You can't win the match or otherwise exploit aborting in any way.

Yes it's a bit retarded. It's the same level of retardation as cypher's/nek's/etc whining/raging.

Forfeiting matches in the first few moments (like cypher and spartie used to do not so long ago) is much more severe IMHO.

But anyways:
Forfeiting the match is the same as disconnecting, you lose and the match is picked up by the QL statistics (and QLRanks by implication).

When aborting the match, the game goes back to warmup as if the match wasn't even started in the first place so it's not noted in the statistics.

The other difference in an official match is that the match isn't fully played out - one player ends it before the official time is up. Doesn't it seem like not allowing the full match to be played has no place in a competition?

That'd be like an olympic runner in the 100 meter dash getting to 90 meters and saying "Eh, I'm gonna lose anyway, so let's just call the whole thing off - nobody needs to see the finish." Or in the other case, "looks like I'm winning this one, so let's make sure to finish the race".

Call me old-fashioned, but some level of sportsmanship and honor should be upheld by admins, starting with some sort of rule to regulate this sort of behavior.

Thing is, when youre the one pausing the game, youre ready for that. You wont forget the times, you wont lose your focus. The other guy is not expecting that and could be suddenly lost.
I dont understand why evil hasnt been disqualified for that. I mean he does that for a year, every two or three games (and the last time he even paused at the very beginning of the match). The admins are russian and zoot, the fair-play defender, just cluelessly laughs about it.

The solution might be the same as koreans made for starcraft, as there were similar creatures trying to get ahead every possible way.
If you need a pause, you write it in the chat and the admin pauses. This way both players are ready for the match to stop.

However, forfeiting or aborting before 10 minutes of play is essentially the same. Like I said, the difference is just a statistics page.

If you don't want to risk losing, and therefore negatively affecting your stats, don't play in a comp.

He used to play in such conditions yesterday and this was noticeable in his movements.
But today his movement in game with fazz was ok. So i think he played today from office with his devices or at least brought them in the hotel. And Ash said on the stream that cooller's setup is ok today. Today fazz was simply better.

The logic is broken for that. If someone has a bad connection, other people shouldn't be punished to play on what he is used to. I know ash isn't used to 70 ping either, but the logic is still valid.

One player shouldn't ruin quarterfinal, semifinal AND final because of HIS bad ping, and eventually also his mud..

(How the ping issue was handled wasn't ash's fault, it was the admins, lets be clear on that.)

But let's look at the facts here:
1) People donate money to watch exciting Quake action
2) A guy single-handedly ruins a MONTH of build up to the grand final
3) Huge disappointment for ALL of the spectators/donators/everybody

Ok, maybe he had his reasons, but this is not practice. Where there is money at stake, there should be a dose of professionalism. There should be some sort of obligation to everybody investing time and money in the tournament.

If ash doesn't feel that obligation towards the 125fps cup and the community - fine, then he simply shouldn't have participated.

the thing is all around were reproaching ash for winning allegedly because he didn't let others have much lower pings when playing vs him. the idea was that ash prevented all the dreamhack potential tops from practicing low ping games against each other on the eve of the event...
spartie was briefly whining during his play, av3k was making it look stupid when losing hard, ins was uhappy about his hero av<3k, zoot was overtly favoring cypher...

Sure pre-fight ping battles you win some you lose some but after you just won 2 don't go full retard when you lose the one after that, specially when it's not really a loss as the pings where still even. Well, that was a big shame that it turned out like this. I could see this happening from Map 1 of Ash vs Spart1e.

I would like to apologise to Nico and Ash for getting involved in the first place. I tried to project some opinions that seemed to be shared by the competitors (the ones having to play Ash). And I must have certainly caused some dark feelings. Next time I'll stay impartial - it was none of my business to begin with.

Of course I'd like to express myself a bit. I put a lot of time and effort in to bringing the best out of Quake and putting it on stream. I find that occasionally there are some questionable admin decisions and it really gets to me more than it should. All the competitors go through their own stresses and have to deal with it themselves, I certainly shouldn't add to this.

Once again, apologies to Nico for trying to get involved more than I am entitled to. Also apologies to Ash for setting him in a bad mood. Lastly, apologies to the community where it seemed my actions were a contributing factor to an already anti-climactic finals day for 125 FPS and potentially making it more anti-climactic.

Too much national pride is never a good thing. And Russians aren't the only one who exude too much of it.

For example, a story about the same thing happening in a western european country:
I went on an excursion all over Europe. Amongst other countries I've visited France(Paris and Montpellier). I've tried talking to numerous people in English - bus drivers, waiters, shop workers. Many of them understood what I was saying perfectly but they just nodded and replied in French. The only people I could successfully communicate with in English (with a few exceptions of course) were people from ex-colonies who lived there.

Yeah, too much national pride is a pain in the ass.

So why is everyone acting like Russians are the only people who act this way?

in fact this was a little bit different. ash has already contributed tons of effort to the ql community mostly russian speaking of course. and he's deservind a bit of respect which he is all of a sudden being completely denied and even humiliated by say such a big name as fazz addressing him directly 'fuck off' while being just a side party. To all the ash defenders in this thread (and I personally don't have anything against the guy):

Imagine if the 125FPS team acted like this and said they're not in the mud to pay out the prize money. Everyone would be losing their shit! They'd be marked as the guys who killed Quake or whatever.

There is MONEY involved here! If this were to happen in a sports league, the perpatrator would be at least banned for a couple of months.

But I don't want ash to be banned for a couple of months; however some kind of penalty must be enforced.

These players can forfeit the whole matchup in any moment ( av3k and spartie did it once in the past). But still local streamers love them and asking for respect.

man, it's pointless to explain smth to the people who base their opinion on false or incomplete data. And to add to that - zoot immediately brings his shining armor of 'sincere' apology and gets things even more bent towards wrong interpretation of what's happened.

Now ash, on the other hand, won't even bother with excuses because he isn't the one to pray for excuses in the first place.

A streamer has no right to intrude into player's mindset with false stupid accusations and a torrent of insults. A streamer's job, when his ass hurts from smth, is to shut the fuck up in console chat and report on his readyness if needed, or contact admins directly.

Zoot is not an admin nor he has any right to even tell ash how he should behave or play his game.
Furthermore, people who were unable to understand russian words in console chat (125fps stream showed pretty much the whole thing) truly believe that ash acted as an asshole in the first place, which is a total misguide - ash reacted, maybe not so fucking kindly and ass-lickery, to the insulting behavior and shitspam from all over. He didn't care much about Avek's or Spartie's comments - those guys were the competitors who left the tourney with grim, but pretty brief smiles - they kept their butthurt to themselves.

And then came queen cyfa, with his royal opinion that he might not play at an unfairly equal pings, nor he will play with 50/30 (which is obviously favors one of the players), but he will gladly play with 50/80 and will gladly say a lot of shit and crazy accusations towards ash, even trying to school him in the rules of fair game (at 50/80 in his favor at that, I repeat).

People of esr missed a lot of zoot's (125fps channel showed all his enraging console outbursts) and cyfer's misbehavior (mostly in russian) along with ash's spiking lagometer, but they sure grasped their queen's talk show.

I always wondered how politely ash talks about any person he comes to discuss about, including zoot. And I'm sure he'll get around it soon, he already chilled down on his stream after the finals. But russian community have seen all the things you've uncovered about yourselves - I'm talking to you both, Zoot&Cyfa. And I'm telling you - the ranks of respect to you among russians have dropped immensely.
But hey - it's not like u care much, huh?

At first i want to say that ash's behavior was pretty controversial today. And i agree with many complaints from community. But some guys trying to present all this "ping situation" like he did it on purpose.
This is bs. He had connection troubles and tried to deal with it in best way by rules. There is a question whether he should to play in this situation or not. But i think it's kind of subjective and leave this on reader's opinion.

Let's take another look at what happened today.
- About a week ago ash's connection became bad raising his ping to swe servers from 55 to 80. But Ash still wanted to attend the playoffs and rules of the league say: players must play at a server with minimal ping difference (without limiting the maximum ping you can force on your opponent, which is our mistake and we will fix it). ash didn't see any problem with playing on 75 (or more) ping, here's where he and his opponents didn't understand each other.
- ash forced spart1e to play on 75 ping an UKR server (equal pings) and won 3:0. spart1e wasn't happy, but he played, because it was according to the rules.
- ash vs av3k. av3k didn't want to play at 75 ping and was ready to give free win to ash, but he was asked to play. Ash was willing to go to SWE with even worse ping (opposed to av3k), but polish player declared go on UKR. Ok. Ash won 3:0, both played at 75ms. Needless to say av3k wasn't happy. And zoot wasn't, and cypher neither and they expressed their unhappiness to ash repeatedly which made him more and more nervous before the final.
- final ash vs cypher. ash was practically forced to play on UKR with 75 ping (vs 55 ping cypher) despite the fact that they could and should have played on RU server with 50 and 30 ping repsectively. by that time ash was under such pressure that he just said 'whatever'. later he said he couldn't think about the game after all the stuff that was written in his address earlier, so he ragequitted during the second map. It was a really bad move and he soon realised it and came back after 5 minutes to play the additional maps. cypher won 4:0. if ash wouldn't return he would definitely be punished with a ban or by simmilar means. But in this case it wasn't such a big violation and he really regreted quitting sinister.
The real problem here was the imperfection in our rules system and we want to change it to prevent players from forcing their opponents to play on unplayable but 'fair' pings. we propose limiting the ping forcing with fe 65ms restriction (we'll ask the players to help us define the limit of reasonable online play). Players with bad connection won't be able to force others to play at a very high ping next time.
About prizes and donations - some people already messaged me asking to move his donation to the next month pool, because of all this shit at final day. No problem, but let's cool down a bit. if you already made your mind - let me know and consider it done. move, refund whatever you ask. And by the way - I talked with AlexeyA, and he doesn't have any objections to ash.

That's pretty accurate description, if you've watched both (zoot's and 125fps) streams. About the final: ash wasn't 'forced' to play on UKR, meaning that admin or cypher gave him no other option - it was rather the comments and pressure, which lead to him proposing to play on UKR with around ~20 higher ping than cypher, and refused to switch to RU even when he came back. So I'd doubt that he started this day thinking 'haha, those western *** can't play on higher ping, so let's take all the money' =/
Still, players like spartie or avek aren't really used to playing with ping this high and they surely were at some disadvantage (Ash had at least a week to adjust to the ping), but you cannot blame Ash for wanting to play, especially when he's not going to dh. So you could only blame rules which allowed such a situation or - if ash's connection problems could've been solved in a day or two - admins, who forced games today.

TBH I thought that even ping is not bug but feature that allows russians to play fair.
There is no scientific proof that 50 is good and 80 is bad. It's just an opinion. I have another opinion.
But I believe that admins know better, so I will not ask to ban anyone even if they think differently.

If you wanna restrict ping then you should restrict(prioritize) servers as well otherwise there will be situations where you will be unable to select between servers providing good1 ping for player1 and bad1 for player2, or bad2 ping for player1 and good2 ping for player2 if both bad1 and bad2 are above restriction and both differences in pings are close.
So if you're gonna restrict servers, at least include servers from Moscow to not disadvantage russian players.
But I would suggest keep minimum ping difference rule except adding rule for higher priority of servers where both players have pings lower then 50(or ask players about actual value)

well ash fucked up only by quitting the final, not cuz of the ping thing imo. that purely had to do with the rules and the admins' calls. and i'm sure ash would have preferred a good ping for a good game for both players. he seems quite nice and fairplay

moreover he wanted both games vs spart1e and av3k on SWE server where avek has under 50ms and spart1e got 30 or so, but BOTH players refused and wanted to play play on UA with 70ms which admins didnt insist on and lost there. And after that they flame ash, really? I plused fazz post right after ash ragequitted at sinister and only for that exact reason, but after seing him coming back in a few minutes and finishing the match I don't see any problem. Moreover he publicly apologized for his ragequit/behavior on his stream which none of other players ever did(i.e. poebu ya vashit rti admini faceit (c) agent, etc).
To the non-players like zoot, several other streamers and other flamers: please just shut up, you aren't admins to decide what's correct and what is not. And don't talk to players without realising what they had been saying each other in their native language before that for 10 minutes straight.
To the admins: please force servers on your own instead of letting players do whatever they want, just use common sense if you don't have a rule for something, these games really lacked any decisions.(Ukraine server was really extreme... just force the games on SWE, ash wasnt against that... And force the game on RU for final where it's 50 vs 30 instead of 77 vs 55... why the fuck did you keep silent then...)

i remember one of those cups where he had to play cooller he didnt want to play ru#1 cuz cooller had 8 ping there vs his 35 he would rather play .de with 50 for cooller 60 for him

50vs60 is fine, especially if all previous games by both players were played like that.
however 75+ is fucked up and there's no sense playing like that with 20ms ping difference if there's a server with the same ping difference and 20ms lower ping for both, it's just ridiculous

Why would ash put himself in a disadvantage by playing with worse ping vs others? Its not fair to be so mean to him. I can perfectly understand why he quitted the final looking at how a big part of the community turned against him especially considering how much he loves them and quake. It was a huge emotional burden,

On another note, didnt cypher used to compete with much higher ping than the others?

nuff already - all the big names have done this at least once - off the top of my head agent, pavel, cypher, p0ni, spart1e... I'm sure there's more. Each one got flamed mercilessly on ESR as is to be expected. Ash hasn't been any more or less flamed than cypher or spart1e for example. It is always disrespectful to the prize donors, but Ash did something these other players didn't: when he had calmed down he realised it was not fair on everyone else and came back to finish his matches, so props to him on what must have been an unpleasant and stressful evening. Nico has provided a clear explanation of the events and committed to improving the ping rules, so really it's done and dusted - the drama was great, but lets move on.
