The end of the day if you win it's a win, I don't care if you've 20-0 someone or 1-0 someone, it's a win. If you're "Talent" analogy that you'll throw out will make someone be superior to the other depending on the margin of win it's still null and void as again like I've probably said 3x or more, a win is a win regardless. It's not that difficult to grasp such a simple concept.

Let's say you have a competition which is heavily influenced by random factors such as starting spawns, respawn positions and probably a lot more factors some pros could tell you about. You don't really need this but I think it makes things more clearly.

Let's also say player A and player B compete against each other and the spectators are interested in judging whose latent ability at performing the sport in question is bigger.

If you see player A winning against B in close matches where random factors helped him and you see player B win against A in a very clear fashion without the contribution of random factors, then logic reasoning will tell you that player B is probably better than A.

I'm not sure why you insist on refusing to use logic reasoning and to make use of all the information at hand, but "A won some matches and B won some matches" clearly isn't a sufficient summary of the above scenario if you are interested in comparing the latent ability of the two players.

See using basic logic to derive a certain outcome is all nice and dandy, however in this sport that we are talking about which would be quake, there is a 50% margin that you will get a better or worse spawn at the start of the game, throwing in random factors that could cause you to win/lose a situation ie; failed rocket jump to to red on ztn, then you get punished for it.

Now player B takes full advantage of said failed rocket jump and in turn wins the map/control for let's say another 5 minutes. Then player A makes a really good positional play and out damages player B thus putting him back in control, then player B makes a crazy play and gets the kill to put him in the lead and then the game ends.


How do you deduce who is better after win/loss?
Would player B be superior to A as he took advantage of railed rocket jump and then in turn had a interesting game to end up winning?

Would A have maintained total control throughout the game if he never failed that original rocket jump?

Would player B be seen as superior to A because he made the crazy play that gets him that final kill and nail in the coffin to secure his victory?

A win is still a win, regardless of situational advantages and factors that could contribute to wins/losses no?

Failing a rocket jump isn't a random factor, that's like tripping in a 100 m sprint because you're nervous. Or stupid.

If one player is much better than the other you won't end up with a 4-5 scoreline, you'll end up with 20-1. That's because the winning player doesn't stop trying to get frags when he's in the lead.

They're trying to get more frags to strengthen a winning position and the result is still going to be the same, be it 1-0 or 20-0, you get the same 500 bucks of a prize sum, not more, not less. You win or you lose, amount of frags matters secondarily.

EDIT: If i remember correctly Av3k did attend to dreamhack 2008 CPMA tournament as well but didn't place top 4. I have found the top 4 placements but he isn't there. The rest of the players are impossible to find.

first of all tdm results are irrevalant, because of teamplay factor. duel is the ultimate skill test. mano a mano. 1 v 1. face to face. noone to cover ur fuckups.

secondly - av3k titles come mostly from q4, while cypher had his one year run in cpmavq3, and ql. plus he was top player in q4, which was basiclly dominated by tox and av3k.

I do count TDM and such as a bonus when comparing overall better players. If a player have won TDM, CTF, FFA and CA tournaments they are bonuses when comparing but Duel is the thing that counts. But Av3k have won major titles in more then just Q4. Have a look for yourself.

ZeRo4 also won CP Babbages, arguably the most prestigious duel tournament from the early era of Q3.

I was left unsatisfied with the BO5 which seemed to end so abruptly. The final ended with Rapha being in control and on his way to tie the game. BO7 would have been much better. I would have loved to see Furious Heights and Blood Run between these guys.

I second that. My humble opinion is that Evil's aim is off compared to what it used to be. He looks like he is losing every lg battle every now and then. Last few online tournaments Cypher beat him by clearly outaiming him. Evil's dodge seems to have improved though.

if its just for QL id say rapha and cypher share the throne. with cypher beeing the most talented and rapha beeing the smartest. one can make inferiour situations work for him and the other can arrange himself to be in superiour situations a whole game long.

In order to find 'the best quake player' we would need to agree on a certain set of properties and their priorities which determine a good quake player.

There are some suggestion on how to rate players, but none of those are extremely convincing comparatively:

E.g. I could easily argue that fatality is the best quake player ever, because of his economic success and his mainstream popularity / brand value.
On the other hand we could also declare thresh to be the best quake player ever, because he was undefeated in tournaments.
We could nominate zero4, rapha and cypher as each of them has won quakecon 3 times.

And these are just the most obvious out of endless options. In fact it is a matter of personal preference and taste.

also he used lots of rockets / rail combos (obviously, because he needed to hit them in order to punish cyphers lg usage). the way cypher ran through the map very adept and confident was awesome to see.

however, seeing how much cypher used shaft, it kind of got boring. rapha had to hit such good rockets out of control - cypher was abusing shaft much more than he used to (thanks to evil).

frankly, the way QL has progressed, I must admit, is not to my liking. it gets too shaft-heavy and it feels that even though they played on lan, the balance between shaft and rocket feels slightly off.

Not this again. He played perfectly fine in all of his groupstage and other play-off matches, why would he suddenly have some issues in the grand final? He even played on the same setup, same stage, same everything. There's just no reason to bring this up.

Also: He can't win dm13 and toxicity against cypher when his aim is off.

I have to agree that cypher showed a disturbing lack of mid-fight weapon changes from LG to RL. That's what caused lots of fights to look very one-dimensional, because many were only about cypher hitting 50+% LG and rapha trying to hit perfect rockets in order to somehow counter it.

You seem biased. You forget that on LAN, rocket > LG. And Plasma > LG in some areas. In fact on LAN you hit a few % less LG than online.

Rockets are so fast and sharp on LAN compared to online. Midair are easy on LAN, while online with different opponents with different pings the air rockets are just a pain. Better switch to LG then.

Cypher just used insane dodge while LGing, using +crouch midair and +forward and changing constantly range to dodge rockets. Surprising the oponents and using advantageous angles. rocket dodge = +b +f, LG dodge = +r +l and some mix.

The latter part is very true - cypher has good timing to evade and or jump over rockets. I saw the games... There were quite a few missed rockets just because of that.

However, my statement stays true that cypher played a lot more shaft than he used to. This is not a bad thing per se but a mere observation and displays the development of the game itself.

Online too - most of the semipros/pros started to lower their sensitivity to hit more LG/long range rail. The game is developing as slower and more hitscan/long range lg and rail battles.

yepp, agreed. the game is more fun though with a slightly higher sensitivity and the ability to move more freely. When I lower my sens it really affects my playstyle in the way I have to set up shots etc - sure, rail and shaft is getting better but I feel my rockets suffer the most with low sens ;/ me not likey.

can someone help me with this new cfg please? i can't deal with "max_cvars" error... should i remove like half of this cfg so it would work? i did remove most of the unrelevant commands (now the cfg file weights 25kb) and it still happens:/

gamma isnt one its missing in his config but judging from photos on the event its probably 1.15 1.20

damn... I was using gamma = 1, thats why im still noob :(
