As this calendar year is coming to an end, a new SC2 SK Proleague season is closing in with each day passing. December 29th marks the start of a new season. A lot has changed since the last season. One of the big changes is that OGN will no longer broadcast PL and it will be broadcasted exclusively on SPOTV Games and SPOTV2.

Does anybody here besides esdf watch StarCraft 2? I feel like the game was raped super-hard by idiot devs, and the scene is about as organic and alive as nuclear plant coolant. Am I missing something here?

yes, the game is shit. no, let me rephrase, the game is wouldn't-touch-with-a-stick-over-internet shit. nonetheless, it's proleague. still the most prestigious team competition in the world and it is mostly fun (at least was the last season).

Yes. It's fun to watch. But i would say it's until you understand how it works. Protoss is the strongest, then Terran and then Zerg. Funiest to watch games are TvZ. In TvP the Terran has no big units against Protoss, has to wait to either go Viking or/and Ghost. In ZvP Zerg have to get the whole map fast and be sure to be able to remax his army very fast while keeping track of Protoss literaly teleporting in the bases.

Most balanced matches are TvT PvP ZvZ ofc. And out of thoose i think TvT and PvP are the funiest.

In terms of playstyle Terran is the most micro heavy, you have to calculate every small encounters, tanks are easily sniped, big bio balls are also weak you have to split units etc and kiting is very hard.

On the other hand you have Zerg which are based on flooding/spaming and eating the maps as fast as possible, very fun to play and watch unless ZvZ.

And then you have Protoss which are based on making a core army of medium size but very strong (strongest units in the game are Protoss btw) and have plenty of Spells to casts, while teleporting small units packs in enemy bases. Not to forget that they also have recall and shits.

I am curious/looking forward to see what is others opinion on that topic.

I briefly played and followed SC2 at it's very beginning and this is interesting because back then as I recall, Terran was hugely overpowered with Protoss being strong and Zerg being, once again, the weakest. I figured after HotS zerg would be at least a little stronger :>

There was also a period where infestors were so OP that there were 4zergs in the quorter finals of GSL etc.

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to balance sc2. You have to please beginners, mediocre players and pros. Just..a clusterfuck.

It has to be pretty difficult, considering Blizzard's aim is not balancing the game rather than satysfying most of their customers.
Its not about terran, zerg or protoss, its about having as small skill gap as possible and keeping things competetive at the same time.

Thats why this game sucks ass.

i like SC2 for a casual watch and top casters are very enjoyable to watch, since they are gamewise very knowledgeable, funny and relaxed and the production of sc2 streams is usually allways topnotch with all the info.

I agree, it has always been whatever quakers play and not just quake..painkiller after q3,then ql had shootmania posts because thats what some played. Also a lot played/play sc2 and you saw plenty of posts back when it was released.

Coach Park left for CJ Entus and EG-TL disbanded the "alliance" and even sold their team house in Korea iirc.

On the other hand, what I forgot to mention in main topic is that TL and IM have formed a partnership that will see HerO competing in 2014 PL as well.

I only watch SC2 streams, so many talented players there, watching Quake is quite boring for me.
In terms of playing, Quake is funnier and more enjoyable, I get tired of SC2 after a few games, even playing random.

I only watch the legacy starleague occasionally. Even though I think bw is vastly superior as a game to sc2 I think most strategy games suffer from the same game mechanic that being a bit ahead lets you systematically build your advantage and most games are decided already very early in the game. That is why I think wc3 had an interesting twist of upkeep that actually gave you at least some edge of being behind.

Is blizzard planning on making WC4? I loved that shit, and it was more balanced with 4 races then sc2 is now with 3 :D (altho obviously still far from perfect).

funny how broodwar had maybe 3 balance patches in 10+ years, rest was balanced out by the players.

and anyway, it's not like blizzard actually balances this game, it cators to the loudest whiners (bronze-platinum) most of the time to keep them happy since they are majority of the playerbase.

Wait a second now, why is Starcraft 2 shit? I follow the scene quite a bit and it is true that the game has some design flaws. There is obviously balance issues at different parts of the game and also each race lets you to abbuse a certain skillet. But overall I feel the game is good and a real esport? Can someone enlighten me on why its "shit"? More interesting, which pro players think it's shit and why?

Sc2 brought nothing new to the rts genre. And it killed most of the aspects that made its older brother, the 15 yo sc:bw legend, so special.

The primary argument against sc2 is based on MBS (Multiple Building Selection).

In BW, you had to select each building individually and press whatever hotkey to produce units. In a situation where you had say 10 barracks, 2 starports, some command centers, it took a certain amount of mechanical ability to keep all your structures producing optimally. Now add in that you're trying to do this while microing your units on the map and it becomes much more difficult.

In SC2, you can just hotkey all your buildings to a single key and hold down the unit hotkey for however many units you want to make. There's also a lot of other things that all add up which makes a lot of old school players dislike sc2.

bw was way more varied and interesting balance-wise, also it was way faster, partly because it was really hard to kill a decent player expanding with some plebe tier all-ins, which happens notoriously @ sc2, on all levels

I don't really believe this game wll stay around so long as bw did
