Just look up the data sheet for w/e models are avail to you at a decent price second hand, and make sure they can do at least 120hz at 1024*768.

I have a Dell P1130, got it for 5 pounds and 20 pound shipping, does 144hz at 1024*768, wonderful :]

No it can't. It can do 120hz @ 800x600 and 160hz @ 640x480 though.

I would just keep an eye on craigslist or whatever internet classifieds europeans use for something good. If you can't find a good CRT for cheap then it's better to just go with a good modern lcd.

I was able to get a lacie electron blue 22 iv for free and it can do 1024x768 at 160hz so it's one of the best crts. there's also a mitsubishi crt that is the same thing. I don't remember the model but there's a widescreen crt with similar performance and some other crts that are able to do over 200hz at lower resolutions.

Which one do 200hz?

edit: Iiyama Vision Master Pro 454 can do 200hz :)

you really just want to look for crts with large screens. anything over 19" will usually be high end and worth looking at the spec sheet for to see what kind of refresh rates it can do.

Is there a place to get a decent CRT?

Found myself two 22" Diamondtron monitors, which one should I use?

1: 2018 x 1536p max., 121kHz; 160Hz
2: 2048 x 1536p max., 140kHz; 160Hz

So both are able to run 1024x768 at 120+Hz comfortably, with the second one I can even run 1080p @ 125Hz. What differences should I look for other than timing performance?

What model diamodtron can do 1080p at 125hz? The one I have with #2's specs can only do something like 94 or 98Hz at that res. It's probably the same tube though. It's a good monitor.

That's strange, seeing as how the specs give you 140/125 = 1120p. But I did forget about the gun reset (* 0.95 = 1064p) so probably it's only 120 instead of 125Hz, but 94-98Hz definitely is too low.

I don't know enough about crts to calculate the refresh rates but the list of resolutions and refresh rates are readily available for most monitors. I don't think your calculation takes into account widescreen vs 4:3. I think some of them cap the refresh rate in the firmware too.

What is readily available are standardized supported timings. Sometimes, in fact most of the times, even the maximum horizontal rates as given by the manufacturers are not the actual maximum you can get them to operate at.

Concerning the calculations necessary, they don't really require you to know much about CRT. For every vertical refresh cycle, there is a [resolutive height] amount of horizontal scan lines. Imagine you are having a 640x480p resolution vertically refreshed 60 times a second as determined by 60Hz. There are now 480 * 60 = 28800 horizontal scan lines the electron gun has to cover per second. I.e. a 28kHz scan rate. If you want to know which refresh rates your monitor supports at a certain resolution, you divide maximum scan rate by desired refresh rate and you have the pixel height of a resolution it can support the desired vertical refresh rate at. You also have to consider that the electron gun (or rather the deflection yokes if we want to be precise) takes some time to travel from the bottom right of the tube to the top left to start drawing again.

The aspect ratio doesn't matter at all (btw. 1440x1080 = 4:3).

Yeah, I figured out what you were doing after I posted that. My question was really about whether the horizontal refresh takes longer to refresh more pixels as in 1920 vs 1440 for 1080p.

Anyway I have access to my crt now and tested it to see that it's independent of the number of horizontal pixels. 1080p does work at 120hz, but not 125hz, so you were right about the gun reset. The reason I thought ~90hz was right was because I use 1920x1440 when I watch 1080p movies and letterbox them.

This monitor does unfortunately max out at 160hz though, unlike some iiyama diamondtrons that let you go higher at low resolutions. As far as I know there's no way to override that. I imagine it might be hardware limitation if they don't let you.

Yeah, the hpixels do not matter because "the gun" always travels the same distance horizontally per scan line.

So, back to my original question, what do you think I should look for with these monitors other than timings? Is there even a noteworthy difference in color representation, sharpness and those things with 20"+ high-end devices? Or better yet, what model do you have and how are you finding it? Any problems? From what I can find the 140khz one is just the newer model. Like I said, I have the 140khz one as a lacie electron blue 22 iv and it's a good monitor. I was able to get it after it had been color calibrated so that isn't an issue. The only problem I have is getting the screen geometry to be perfect, but that is a problem I've had with every CRT.

Just check your favourite craigslist website or whatever. I'm currently using a 12 y/o Vision Master pro 411 which does 120hz @ 800x600. But it's 17" and crappy.

Going to pick up a Viewsonic P227F soon. 21", 154hz @ 1366x768. Pretty solid for 10 euro's if you ask me.

And if you want a good CRT, just get one that didn't got used too intenively since the picture quality degrades over time. Get a diamondtron/latest shadow mask model and you're good to go.

Sony FW900 was arguably the best CRT monitor ever made.

I bought a Sony GDM-FW900 after months of stalking on ebay, and it's totally worth it!
Mine comes from a shop that went bankrupt never sold it and it still was in it's original package when I got it. I was really really lucky.

The feeling you get playing on such a CRT just blows me away especially for old games, so it's worth the size and weight.
You gotta have a solid desk for such a monitor though.

I actually have he exact same one here. Those things are massive. Had to eventually replace it with an LCD because it had a vertical stripe on the screen which is very annoying.

Hm no idea, never had any problem until now!

There are some FW900's that pop up on ebay in germany mostly, and if you're lucky you can get them cheap.
I don't know if fixing that is possible tbh.

got myself a iiyama pro 454. looks great so far. great colors, brightness, sharpness.

Only problem is that it somehow got 2 dead (grey) rows :/
only noticable on white background (while reading)

Will test it this weekend with quake live.

How noticeable are they? I have a NEC MultiSync FE950+ and it has 2 faint lines near the top and lower portions of the screen but they are barely noticeable unless you're looking. Not a flaw, it's the way they were made.

Love this monitor when I bought it two years ago. I actually bought two because the first one had a good tube but the case was beige. Bought a black one and swapped the tube into it. I don't see myself going to an LCD until this one dies or the price of 120hz LCDs drops to an affordable level.

Aha OK. The lines are like u described them. If its suppose to be like that then I'm fine with it.

They are not that noticeable. Only on white background u can see the bright grey lines.

There's a monitor tool by manufacturer EIZO to eliminate those grey rows on Trinitron CRTs afaik.

how can i found out whats the maximum hz that my graphic card (ati 4350) has at 800x600. I cant set more then 160hz at 800x600.

I can however set 200hz at 640x480
