Spawned a DE DOM server with standard maps - running for 6 days in a row now and it was so packed I had to create extra slots for spectators.

5on5 with 2 specs, from morning till evening (EU time)

Mostly a combination of prem and standard players which is good and means both sides can now enjoy the otherwise desolated gametypes. More incentive from standard players to grab prem and play on all maps and more activity on prem gametypes.


Granted it takes a few minutes to get a game going, but as soon as there's at least 3 people on it, more will come.

It's not exactly neat and has no design so far, but it will be added when race gets more activity.

There are plans to make the times easier to find, have nicer graphics, ability to search for you own times etc.

But for now, enjoy the stripped version.

No, not at this time. There are still SaM customizations that are not allowed on standard servers, such as PQL, QuadHog, and Infected.

Well I can tell you a few dozen players subscribed to play on our iFT servers every night in North America. It may not be much but there probably other similar communities in different places and for different gamemodes.

I would say that this is wrong. For two reasons. Firstly because this update boosted the premium activity (making it much easier to get a premium server started). Secondly because Pro spawned standard servers were pretty much equivalent before and after the update. Everyone is still able to vote there. The only difference is that the set of playable maps changes every month. There are always good and bad maps in the rotation... just like back when the standard set was static.

I'd just like to point out that the rotation and the move to disable callvote are two different things. We could have a rotation with callvote. The rotation is good. I don't like the lack of callvote.

Another possibility would be to allow subscribers (only) to call votes in normal public standard servers. It would be a reasonable middle ground, in my opinion.

"go pro or go home"...or just deal with the fact that if you're not paying, you get whatever ID feels like giving to you based on their analysis of what's going to keep them afloat/profitable as a business. And while you're dealing with that, keep in mind that it only costs $2/month for a Pro Premium subscription. That's equivalent to scrounging up TWO FUCKING QUARTERS PER WEEK, putting them in a piggy bank, and sending the $24 off to ID to support your beloved Quake.

Grow up, stop complaining about your first-world problems (no meme needed, everyone knows what it would look like), dig around in that nasty cum-covered couch of yours for those two quarters (or ask your mommy for them), and start supporting the things you care about.

Syncerror, could it be possible to increase the time an empty server can stay online before it gets disconnected? Possibly by leaving this as an option to the user starting the server (like having the default time as "10" or "15" min and allowing up to, let's say, 12 hours)?

I ask this because I host a CTF server on a daily basis and it is incredibly frustrating to have it disappear after 10-15 minutes unless I am connected to it. I usually launch it before going to work and have to join it and leave my home with the computer turned on just so it doesn't disappear (there aren't many people playing at that time of the day). The same things goes for when I come back from a night out at 4 or 5 am on a Friday or a Saturday night - I know I'm going to get up around noon-1pm, and unless I leave my computer on there is no way people will be able to play on my server until I wake up since there are obviously not going to be other people connected to it non-stop from 4am until 9-10am (when many people start playing on Saturdays and Sundays).

The only reason I purchased a Pro account was to host my own public server open to non-subscribers, and I'm providing a service that can possibly help convince users to purchase premium/pro as well, for example in order to keep playing on the maps/with the settings that they will have found on my server but that are no longer in the standard rotation. I understand that you don't want every server to stay on for ages, for example those started by users who wanted to play a couple of duels on their own servers, but I think you should help those server owners who want to actually provide a long-lasting playing ground for the community (especially since such custom servers are usually pretty popular; mine is often full - at 16/16 - during "busy" hours). This could easily be done by allowing for multiple time options and I don't think it would overload your server machines. Perhaps you could only grant such permissions to users you see hosting often/with servers who stay up for long periods of time.

If there are already ways to keep one's server up without being actually on the server, and I just haven't found it yet, I apologize in advance.

I'm not against increasing the time, but we wouldn't be able to make it as lengthy as 12 hours. This entire systems works because users get to 'time-share' the servers. We'll review our server load usage to see if the timeout length can be increased, and by how much.

Thanks for the reply - would it perhaps be possible to look at the usual server activity of users to see which ones could "legitimately" benefit from longer times? For example, among those hosting public servers in Europe, I can think of a handful of CTF hosts (Lefuu something, Missrocketbunny, kwizach...), about a dozen others for CA, and I don't know about other modes but probably less than CA. Everyone's time doesn't need to get increased - most should indeed remain at default to prevent too much server load.

loads of people could host more if it weren't difficult for them as it is.

naming servers and extending the length of their idle-time is a must for every user. people spawn more than what you realize, and also not always just one mode. especially with the latest changes a lot of new options are possible.

Is the load balance just a metric or an actual manager? I personally would like if empty servers could be freed to accomodate for more pro spawned servers, as with the latter, at least one player plans to play in it. Ofc, within reason.
