Xonotic evolved from Nexuiz Classic. It is still an ongoing project, and is based around the Darkplaces engine.

The Nexuiz name was sold not long ago to IllFonic, and they developed the 2012 version which i nothing like the original Nexuiz (now Xonotic), and is quite likely the least competitive "Oldschool FPS", saturated with pretty visuals and suffering from mediocre gameplay.

You should definitely give Xonotic a try, it is really quite a lot of fun. It's still active, and the community seems rather nice. The QL map Fuse was originally developed by Cityy for Xonotic quite recently, so that should give you some indication that new content is being made for the game.

So basically, go for Xonotic and stay far away from Nexuiz (2012), would be my input. =)

Both games essentially share the same map library as they use the same map format, you could take maps from Nexuiz community to Xonotic and vice versa. The communities are also quite mixed in together, each helping one another. Server hosts tend to occupy both games and some players have a habit of switching between games.

Thing with Nexuiz classic however is that it's no longer being updated, the player base there is mainly sticking to Instagib which doesn't require as much balance tweaking and new features. However, even if you prefer just Instagib I still would recommend Xonotic, as it has and is being improved, netcode is better and I personally find the gameplay more challenging.

But new Nexuiz is cry engine...
imo both games right now... are bad.

QL/CPMA/vQ3/QW and even Warsow are way better.

QL, CPMA, QW and WSW in their core are identical to each other (same weapons, same purpose). Xonotic has a lot of new things to offer in this department and it's a fully open source game on top of it. Also, it's bit unfair to compare complete games with games at their beta stage.

I agree the new Nexuiz is horrible, but it's inevitable course towards failure has nothing to do with Xonotic / Nexuiz classic. Illfonic cocked up on their own without knowing anything about this genre.

But almost nobody playing it. That's the problem.

adding second fire mode, and messing up with weapon properties like UT did is not something to be proud off.

It's hard to tell how it is by watching, try it out yourself. I'm sure you haven't killed someone with a curve rocket in QL before.

Why are small player bases so underrated? If you truly enjoy the game, be more involved with the community.

QL community is small. Xonotic/Warsow in comparison, seems to be dead.

btw. I dislike Warsow because of other things too, not only playerbase. design, dash etc.

I bought Nexuiz. My only advice is: don't ever do that.

Stick to QL, Xonotic, Warsow, QW or CPMA.

GPL nexuiz >> xonotic. Anyone tell you otherwise and they are probably xonotic devs. Xonotic is a handicap accessible version of gpl nexuiz; easy strafing, easy curvy rockets, damage reload for nex (rail), an actual reload for machine gun (not even kidding on that one), mortar primary/secondary random spread (slight amount, though noticeable and quite annoying). I've dueled at the highest level of both games, and without a doubt gpl nexuiz has always had the higher learning curve. Also, it seems as if the development community for xonotic has its internal conflicts as evidenced by its forum.

To sum it up, the Xonotic devs wanted to make the best out of the Illfonic drama, taking it as an opportunity for a new start. Due to different (mostly human-related) reasons this never worked out though and the game is stuck between what Nexuiz had been and what Xonotic should have been. Looking back, a polished Nexuiz 3.0 (2.5.2 was the last stable version before the Illfonic story) would have been much better than what we have now. But that's just my opinion. And hi pclizard.

There's hardly any speed acceleration in Nexuiz classic, you can strafe jump or bunnyhop = same effect. There's not much difference in strafing difficulty, it's just a different technique. Rocket projectiles are twice as slow in Nexuiz, they are indeed harder to use, or should I say, easier to avoid. I suppose it's a matter of taste. Nexgun nerfing was annoying indeed, but quite necessary for balance. Machinegun is shit in both games and not going to be in the core weapons in future versions. Mortar primary/secondary doesn't have spread in the newest weapon balance. If it does it is so small it can't be distinguished even from a slow motion demo playback.

Only difficulty in Nexuiz for me is it's wonky and slow movement, it is harder to evade shots and easier to hit people and you're forgetting Nexuiz no longer have ANY developers. If you like Nexuiz more which you obviously do seeing how feisty you got, you might want to check out another upcoming fork called Vecxis, it's aim is to restore Nexuiz gameplay back to it's prime.

Yeah I'm aware of vecxis, been working on some code changes for it in my spare time. You say it is harder to evade shots and easier to hit, but playing nexuiz these days isn't what it used to be 4-5 years ago. Higher level players in nexuiz back then made it very difficult to land shots on them. The skill level in nexuiz has rapidly deteriorated over the last several years to a point where the community only consists of instagib noobs and regular ctf/dm players that plateaued in skill years ago. The strafing techniques are indeed different, but in xonotic you aren't punished nearly as badly for trying to just +forward +jump and turn w/ mouse and expecting to move fluidly.

I just don't see the appeal of that sort of punishment for same reasons why I don't see appeal in falling damage from a 2 meter height = it's much more fun without it. However if there was a falling damage feature like that and certain technique in movement could prevent that, I would understand why you'd be so disappointed when it's not part of the game anymore.

But if you truly valuate a game from stuff like that you should quit Nexuiz/Xonotic altogether and start playing Q3 or Q2.

Not even sure if there is a single proper vanilla server for Europe in Nexuiz anymore.
