"Better" servers wouldn't change anything to the problem. More servers with different providers could improve the probability that a given user finds a server with a reasonable ping/routing. That's all.

i have this the other way around. all servers are fine for me, with the exception of Maidenhead UK. 110-120 ping sometimes, and other times 20ms. It can change on the fly.

Tracert showed me level3 isnt working properly. Not sure what I can do about it other than wait it out :p

Ye Orange is fucked up these days. I get a better ping on many DE/NL and US servers with a Bouygues ADSL connection (with 30ms in the country vs 8ms with fiber) than with an Orange fiber connection.
Using a VPN also fixes the issues entirely (such as FrozenWay) and gives me back my normal expected ping.

Free has its share of issues as well, it's just routing/peering conflicts (more often that not it's not because of broken cables but rather because some operator doesn't want to pay/doesn't pay on time/refuses to pay the requested amount etc). Just secret business bullshit, very hard to find reliable information on that.

I use FrozenWay yea.

VPN4gamers is great as well (it only reroutes game traffic and is free without limitations) but it's not supported for all games (with default settings at least) and mostly useful with MMOs (or other games where you always connect to the same ips).

As always, http://incloak.com/ has 24hr trial and is the cheapest overall.

DE and NL are unplayable for me, always 120-160 there :( But around midnight, everything goes back to normal.

They asked for a trace and kind of fixed the problem. They basically changed the route from:

Frankfurt - Rotterdam - Amsterdam - Frankfurt - Munich - Vienna - Switzerland -> 100ms

to

Frankfurt - London - ? - Switzerland -> 41ms

not optimal but I can finally play again (just lost 100 elo since I got the servers back)

i got ping 20 on one half of the german servers and ping 130 on the other half...

I used to ping 65 to .de. Now I ping 120-150 in every other servers but the uk ones.

Same situation for half of the players in Italy. It started happening 2/3 weeks ago. Very high ping to DE/NL server during all the evening, totally unplayable.
Using tracert there is a Node that gives some problem, probably can't manage high traffic in the evening.

Hope to see this resolved as the Nation Cup is going to start in few days.

I actually think Quake servers are far worse.
How do I get 70 ping to Dallax and Chicago when Chicago is way farther than California?
I also get 30 to California and I'm in California. 100+ for anything far east...

did you run trace to the servers? my provider since last year kindly adds me 20ms in the second hop. Maybe in your case some node in the route is fucking things up, not necessarily ID fault.

On Cable I get about 16 to west coast on tribes.

For DSL to chicago in Tribes I get about 60, cable about 65

For DSL to chicago QL I get 95, 100 to texas

Anyone can choose who they rent servers from but I don't think the ISP behind them (if the server provider isn't already one or a backbone) is ever part of the contract. All one can do is rent many servers from many different providers which hopefully will have different internet providers. The diversity will improve the probability that one of them has good peering agreements with your ISP (or whichever backbone it's dealing with). I don't think you'll ever find a single provider which works well for everyone all the time. Change providers and you're just gonna change the set of players without a fucked up routing.

Not really, BF3's servers are superb.

I get 15ping on DSL, cable, whatever. My friends on verizon, at&t, comcast all have great ping.

BF3 servers are top quality.

not really ql related, but since 3 or 4 weeks,m ive been having similar issues with some cpm server(namely the okidoki one in .nl)

Same here, terribad ping to UK using OVH Telecom for several months.

I live in germany with 6mbit up and 2mbit down dsl line..
Ping should be around 20-30ms

I got 45-50ms nice nice.

@Noosh: we peer with OVH and as a result the Quake Live servers in Rotterdam/Frankfurt should perform a lot better than UK for you.

@rest, please feel free to e-mail info@i3d.net with WinMTR results + your public IP address. I can't promise that I'll be able to lower latency every time since some ISP really do their utmost best to keep their network congested, but we can always try.
