I think it would be considered as a cheat yes.

I'm not sure it falls under the guise of cheating since its not giving you information like when the other player picks items up it would definitely be frowned upon though and surely not allowed at a lan.

Cheat? Yes. You gain "unfair advantage" over other players that can't time items.
Ban worthy? No. You can even use digital timers attached to monitor ;)

It's not allowed to use any software that gives you unfair advantage. Digital timers contain software too, so you're only clean if you use analog mechanical clocks (no mention of hardware in terms of use).

Yeah, analog clocks should be ok :) But the point was the timers can be separate from computer so it's absurd to try to ban them in online play. Still it would be lame to use them, it's better to learn the +25/+35 times.

...on a 2nd thought, it depends on who is using it. If an odrinary dueler is using it, then is ok. If someone like ins is using it, where the only guaranteed card you have against him, is outsmarting him, then it would be lame. It will make your card weaker and him stronger. Therefore, is ban worthy, since it will add a bit of brain to aim whores.

Ok, so we set up a drag race, no engines over 2.0 liters, no fuel additives, turbos, or any other enhancements over stock engine, etc.

Scenario 1: Racer A shows up with a pimped out Civic with a 2.0L DOHC VTEC dopeass motor, churning out 200 horsepower. Racer B shows up with a crappy old Ford Fiesta with a 1.0L turd of a motor, but secretly jets it with nitrous oxide (2Fast2Furious!) so that it runs around 150 horsepower. They race, and Racer A wins by a lot.

Scenario 2: Racer A shows up with the same setup as in Scenario 1. Racer B has the same crappy 1.0L Fiesta, but this time it has nitrous AND a turbo, putting out over 300 horsepower with the juice flowing. A quarter mile and about 13 seconds pass and Racer B destroys Racer A.

In Scenario 1, did Racer B cheat? And should they be banned because of it? How about in Scenario 2?

Good point, this is part of the game and anything to aid certain aspects should be considered 'cheats' as soon as you add something.

It's the same as downloading 'trainers' or whatever for games.

The motivation behind this of course is that doing clock math in your head being very important to the game while at the same time its the least fun part.
There's a concept in game design that its called "accessibility" that pretty much sums how easy the player gets the information he needs and this is by far one of the least accessible aspects of quake. Im not against having to time the items or anything, in fact i like that you have to watch the clock while infight to get a future advantage, i like that you have to save that nunber in your head while doing other stuff as it really add tension to the game, but the math thing its kind of overwhelming. Another inaccessible thing is having to go to the game manual to know if the mega in that map is 2min or 35s or 45s, and the quad? and the powerups? ... all that information should be accessible in ingame menus i think.
on a color note i think quake has other aspects that are really good in accessibility as the hit sound, color changing crosshair reflecting dmg done, the hud and the settings menu (in quake live).

The math thing is no problem because after some practice the respawn time just pops up automatically and you only have to remember it. I know it's not easy, but it gives the game more depth.

Look, before even making this i read all the guides about this and on the end it was clear that the rapha "learn the mega and armor language" was the way to go.
I walk to and from work like 2hs a day. I used that time for 3 weeks to learn the times and i kind of know them already. In some test about timing i got to 3sec average (not awesome but the best i can do right now). In the end i did this because i like the game and i cared about the game for a while (in single player like forever and in multiplayer now). I dont really imagine a newcomer doing all that trouble just to do the math while all 1000 other games have the crucial important information right on screen.
Im making clear again that i really like the way duel is now and all aspects of it. The only one aspect i dont like is the math.

There is more to a game of duel than picking items, so you shouldn't stress out if you forget to time or forget the time. Try to position so that you can catch your opponent going for that item, or so that you can hear the pickup and then timestamp that number into your brain ( say: MEGA at 55, MEGA at 55 etc.). You can compensate weak timing with good attacks.

I recommend keeping track of the items by yourself, it's more fun that way especially when it becomes a second nature.

the program doesn't keep track, it just shows 2 clocks offset to the game clock so he doesn't have to do the math. he still has to remember the numbers by himself...

No need for outside software. There are ways to do this in game. The main problem with it is that you cannot forget the item time. Intense battle, unexpected situation, it is of no consequence. What is to stop you from timing every single item on the map? The way I see it is that it's not the way the game is meant to be played. You have grandmaster tier timing without actually being one. Don't use this crap.

Somebody can sit next to you and do all timing for you. This is cheating too. When you circumvent an element of the game, such as timing items, you have a huge advantage over the majority of people.

It basically depends on the policy of each league/cup. But basically every cup/league declines app that "hook" into the game. That means no overlay, that means no gfx pimping (e.g. rivatuner and loadbias), etc etc.

Quakelive itself cannot ban you for this, and they never will (or find out).

it's not cheating since everyone can do it - i created .wav files that countdown when theres 5 seconds left of an item. I activate it once the game starts and an item is picked up by binding to my kp keys

That's cheating.
The XSTimer style scripts which don't work out the time for you, and you have to type it in yourself are a little fuzzy but were not considered cheating, it's time consuming to type the item then the numbers in, it just makes it easy to announce to a team.

Triggering external wavs on pickup that are then doing the timing for you is considered cheating, and people have been banned for admitting it already.

I still have to hit the key once the item is picked up either by me or the opponent to start the countdown


if you knew my duel alias and checked the history you'd see it's not that great of an advantage but i won't lose to 1700 or below ELO scrubs

in QL "wait XX" blocks every other command from execution for XX amount of gametics so you still would be paralyzed

aww, just saw it counting down, so i thought it would work.
however you can make it work with mouse/keyboard software.
it would work with logitech gaming software, with "textblock" makro.

you would have a mousebutton bound to the text "xxxxxxx..." with 1000ms delay between each character.

and a script in autoexec.cfg, with "bind X print 35" and with the next keypress it prints "34" and so on.

I actually intended to suggest this for a future update (lol) at some point when I was very new (second half of last year). Nothing speaks against the idea except that things have been the other way for years now, and it would probably have huge implications on the meta and the scene in general. (Anybody who thinks this grants any player an advantage beyond not having to do math is an idiot an has no idea how the game works btw)

I only a few hundred duels to my name (so I'm new, like you), and I can tell you that knowing the next respawn time is the easiest part of timing by now for me. Keeping track of the times for a whole match, cycling armors and not syncing up stuff is way harder.

some tips for getting respawn times into your head: Instead of learning every single time for both MH and armors, look at the second digit of your pickup time. When it's a 1, the next respawn is xx:x6, when it's a 6, next respawn is xx:x1. So there's a pair of two numbers: 1 and 6. there are 4 other pairs: 0&5, 2&7,3&8 and 4&9. Knowing respawn time became much easier for me when I had that memorized. Because all the other digits of the respawn time can be more or less guessed. Picked up red at 43? When the first digit of an armor pickup time is a 4, respawn's somewhere between 05 and 15. Look at the three -> red respawns 08. Very easy and quick process to do in your head. the following tool recognizes this and helps you practice with that concept in mind: http://deadmen.us/quake-timers.html There's also http://visualhud.pk69.com/timer/.

Lastly, when I'm out of control and I'm on a map with, let's say MH, RA and 2 YA, I'll just time one YA and then see how long it takes to run to the other one. Because the intervall between the armors is always the same and it takes you +- always the same time to move from here to there, you can arrange it that the second YA is spawning as soon as you run your "yellow-to-yellow" route. On my (and possibly your) level this is more than enough timing for out of control. Together with shards I usually get to 100/200 in like a minute and can then challenge on the next major item. Plus if the challenge fails I know I have two conclusive yellows to fall back on (there's also health up most of the time unless you picked it up yourself or did excessive dmg on the enemy at some other point). bam, you're back to 100/100 and can pose a serious threat on the next major item.

Well I agree with most people and would say: Just learn to fuckin count. Alas, that is not the hard part in timing, it is memorizing the times. The math is damn easy if you passed 3rd grade.

However, I have to turn to some of the people here and ask two things:

a) have you read the post? The program does NOT memorize/display any respawn times. It's just offset clocks.

b) Are you serious? Its the same as putting a fuckin watch on your desk that's offset. Its in no way a cheat, I mean it doesn't give you an advantage if you're older than 8. Get a grip...

its basic math, but still takes some time if you are constantly taking rockets in the face as i usually do. I ended up memorizing the times but i still require some effort to remember them fast enough while playing.

b) made me laugh! but seriously people here stated that it gives me an advantage vs people that struggle with the math and dont have this aid wich suits the majority of my opponents so im "just learning to fucking count" :)

ideally (at least in my point of view) this feature should be available oficially in the game hud, as i dont see any point whatsoever in punishing people to do math while they are playing a fps game, but syncerror (and part of the community) stated slightly against this in another similar post these days.
