I asked zoot and ins in QL chat and ins told that me the game clock counts down on porpoise so people who don't play quake understand when a game ends...
That's easily worst explanation ever for a change tbh. After watching one game till the end, anyone will be aware when the game ends. And if non-players are not gonna watch even one game till the end, then what's the point of changing in the first place.
once this was a serious hardcore stream, without any pussy count-down-clocks and with the picmip to make the game look like it's on a GAMEBOY! What is next? Pushing Sync for a search and destroy mod? Streaming CoD? Team up with 2gd and STREAM DOTA?!?!?!??? THIS IS ESR!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK THE NEWCOMERS!!!
The clock counting down actually makes more sense than up.
Only problem is that the game has this (logical) bug in that the overtime clock does not follow the direction of the main clock. Would be trivial to fix but hey, this is QuakeLive.
can't tell if trolling, uneducated, or just stupid...
Direction of regular (not overtime) gameclock is a user-controllable variable - Zoot gets to pick in which direction it counts. Not a bug, so nothing to fix.
And in case you can't follow the debate here, 99% of all Quake players will play with clock counting up from 0:00 because it's easier to time items that way. So the fact that Zoot streams games with it counting down from 10:00 is confusing and lame to actual Quake players, which is why so much opposition to his current config.
Well, some people hate changes so it's not really about better - worse thing, it's about what they are used to. For example, the same people whine when facebook changes something. There have been shitty changes, but most of them are actually good like the timeline. Now it's much easier to stalk someone and go back on their older posts, and so on. Still, some people just can't handle change, so they will always whine.
You don't understand. Most of the viewers don't even play duel. We play team gametypes like all FPS players in the last 15 years.
And in team game you time and announce the time to your mates. And everyone has to have clock timing in the same direction for this. And strangely enough, everyone's clock goes up.
Even stermy had to learn timing upwards to play CTF and TDM ;)
Now that I think of it, majority of QL players play CA anyways and there's no timing there, so in reality no one cares but 5 nerds. Sorry for wasting your time.
What about leaving it counting up, and putting next to the Bo1, Bo3 tags a TL=10min??? Or something like that. Then newbs will know when it ends, seasoned players wont have brain seizures when seeing the clock counting down, and normal time will run like overtime time.
It's not just for duel. TDM matches for example last for... 20 mins is it? I keep forgetting it because I don't play TDM so this will have other uses.
Besides we're looking at a long term benefit/rationalization here. Kinda like if the last remaining countries to officially use imperial units of measurement went over today. Talking of course about Liberia, Myanmar and the United States of America.
Now it'd be great if this was confirmed but I think Sync said in chat he'd get round to fixing the overtime clock direction so...
Knowing how QL's spectating/streaming support is developed [1] I expect it will count from 2:00 towards 0:00 in each overtime with no indication of how many OTs there were.
[1] notice how after 2 years of showing same name twice on comphud's scorebox, now it's second year of showing both players' names but always highlighting one of them, disregarding who you're spectating
EDIT: also no skull counter for Harvester on comphud.
Overtime clock direction would be fine if they added a dash in front of it. So it would be like:
2 seconds left:
00:02
Time over:
00:00
2 seconds into overtime:
-00:02
That would mean if you see the dash you know it's overtime, and you also know how many overtimes it has been. Plus people tuning in wouldn't confuse overtime for regular time like back in the days when it was counting up on Zoot's stream.
Guys seriously the only reason your talking about this is it is something to talk about. It actually makes sense to have the clock on a live stream count down. All the rest of the times on the screen count down so why not have the consistency. Oh and BTW zoot is not the only one who uses cg_leveltimerdirection "0". Jehar who by far is one of the most experienced and well liked castors in quake has always had his clock count down on Tastyspleen TV.
Going by the popularity of the post only 3% of you want the clock to count up the rest of us either dont care or agree with the clock counting down.
