Who would travel to compete overseas not having certainty over prize pool, map pool (it does matter, chances of winning) and most importantly if there will be a tournament in first place in a year that doom4 could be released?

Planning and making necessary expenses is done months before, when it's possible to make the arrangements and is cheaper to travel..Problem is id announces tournaments, with full info, about 2 weeks before the event, which is the reason why there are few non US participants. The only sane ways of being there are to be sponsored (almost no one) or to take the competition as vacations (not really competing).

At the same time, the US players (the 99% of quakecon tourney participants) will not be prepared because of the same reasons, so the level of gameplay does suffer, coverage is mediocre unless done by outsiders (the 2gd and faceit years were the only acceptable ones. Before there were days without stream and even a stage on fire), etc..

I know you like to defend id and essentially do their job (idk why since you don't work there), but that long running situation is basically terrorism and defending them on this is just pointless; even as much as on how they run the grand finals.

To be completely clear, the full tournament announcement consists of everything related and should be at least two months before the event.



And as a offtopic, the grand finals should be separate from the giveaways and silly contests venue, a different area.
The vast majority of people don't care about the tournaments, which are actually held on a separate area so they don't even know there is one. Furthermore, outside the tournament 99% of people at quakecon don't care about quake, and that goes for LAN attendants, for quakecon organizers and for id itself. That's why quake has less preference than bawls chugging and why all finals' organization that I have seen have been horrible beyond belief.

Map pool : Probably 5 maps again. My guess :

Both of those are fairly new and well received. They are sure to make their way in the map pool IMO :
- Cure
- Sinister

At this point we have a mid-speed and a slowish map. We're sure to have a least one fast.

- Aerowalk (or Toxicity)

QCon likes to promote new maps. I wouldn't be surprised if this one made its way in even though we already have Cure and Sinister, because it wasn't really given a chance before :

- Delirium

It plays fairly fast so the slow/fast balance wouldn't be too bad. On top of that they are going to throw a "classic" slowish map :

- Furious Heights (or Lost World)

If they didn't pick Delirium, we will probably get both Furious Heights and Lost World. Forget Blood Run, I don't think it's gonna be picked.

Oh, I fucking hope it's not just 5 map pool. Grand Final of Quake lan duel tournament should be BEST OF SEVEN! FFS, we get Bo5 every week with facey. pro lan tournaments are to be better and should always be Bo7 in Grand Final.

Well, it might not be the case in the end, but QCon's QL map pools have traditionally been composed of 5 maps.

Not that you said it was a good idea, but Bo5 for a lan duel tourney just plain makes it less fun to watch. Therefore, I will probably be saying 'Bo7!' a lot unless they state it will be Bo7. :D

QCon announces too late usually. Now we have a 6 moths headstart and no prize money/tournament so we complain... GG

QuakeCon is held every fucking year. Tournaments / prize money vary. You don't need QuakeCon to be announced to prepare for it.

Tbh i hate it as any hardcore quake fan, but lolca is whats keeping quakelive player numbers afloat. I dont have problems with a lolca tournament but dont mess with the duel masters!

I don't think the casuals playing only CA would be interested in a tournament. It won't help QL.

Having another tournament necessarily harms duel, because of time, space and resources constraints, and prize money is split.

Also the "ca casuals" don't watch tournaments, as shown last year. Duel day thursday = 8k, CA day friday = no one watched.

Nice to see an early announcement; hopefully the map pool will be announced with a good amount of time before the tournament as well. Although there should be ample time played on a variety of maps, especially new ones, before deciding on a map pool imo. So I would personally like to see the map pool decided on and announced say, ideally, no later than a month before qcon.

i dunno man, im reading alot of hate about the game costing full price aswell as monthly fee, while loads of mmo's are changing to a free system with micropayments or w/e its called. they might need additional marketing down the line ^^

They could I just think it would be weird if it was the focal point of quakecon, the console release is in June so if any thing they might be pushing that.

If a similar tournament is part of this year's event, please do a DOM one. It's just as entry level but gives the teams something to fight for, and while it's hard to predict what depth it can have, to the minimum it forces some basic strategies.

instead of normal tourneys, this year Quakecon will be having every player in instagib FFA on BlackCath, for 8 hours straight, WINNER TAKES ALL

If there is a team tournament, CTF is the best way to go.
TDM tournament a couple of years ago had about 8 signups if I remember correctly.

Every CTF tourney theirs only 6-8 teams also.

And tons of low quality 8-0 games which is equally as unexciting as a 200-100 frag tdm game.

W.E mode it is I wish they'd just announce it months instead of weeks in advance so w.e it happens to be actually has a chance to succeed for the first time ever.

Also in the last 14 months in the USA theres been like barely any CTF pickup games but a steady stream of TDM pickup games. I really hope id has noticed that.

This shit should be about the players attending the LAN party anyway.. not the peanut gallery, imo.

as far as I know the qlpickup.us only ever did CTF games on far east coast servers. Its also been dead for a year and a half I'm told, but I wouldn't really know for certain since I haven't idled there in years cause of the first point.

#natdm.ql we only play TDM and we spawn the servers in a variety of locations to accommodate the player pool as best as possible. Its usually on CHI, but sometimes on LA or TX servers as well. It has been going steady (albeit with a small base of players) for over a year now.

QL 1v1, QL 2v2 TDM (regular or PQL) and QW 1v1 for the "throwback" tourney please =]

Hmm, I'm seeing a lot of DOM posts. I'm not sure how great a full DOM tourney would be, maybe a few showmatches with the pros or a small draft would be cool. But I'd seriously put some thought into 2v2 tdm. you can have some cool combinations turning up.
