Awards don't necessarily make someone a good actor, but in PSH case he was a good actor.

When paul walker died, I did not consider him a great actor, for me he was perfect for the fast and furious roles because his natural demeanor was perfect for that role, it was the same in deep blue and 8 below where the roles were not that deep and were suited to his natural demeanor. Nice guy, easy on the eye, could act well enough for the roles he got but he was never going to get anything which put him out there.

PSH was someone who would play a wide range convincing roles OUTSIDE of his default profile, for me that is what makes a good actor.

And that Scorsese's a sell-out cashing in on his name should have been obvious since he made an entirely redundant remake of that fairly nice Hongkong flick. And now he's done the same thing again, for a third time. Go figure.

Still, it's all been down hill from Taxi Driver, just becoming less and less creative and more repetitive over the years. Taxi Driver, DeNiro's once-in-a-lifetime performance. Schrader's once-in-a-lifetime script. And Scorsese's once-in-a-lifetime direction (not sure how much credit to give him for the cinematography, like that top down tracking shot on the final mayhem - would have to look up again who might have been responsible for that kind of genius).

And since he's been teaming up with DiCaprio all I've seen coming from him is typical Hollywood blockbuster style entertainment, and even rather mediocre at that (Shutter Island - yawn - Hugo - yawn - ...). Nothing memorable at all, as far as I'm concerned.

About his supposed talent, I never saw that. Capote, I think that was such a bad carricature of a character. I am sorry to say, for all the fans, but that way to talk, that over the top weirdness, how is that supposed to be beliavable again? I could not dive into this movie one bit because of this depiction of a person, it just did not fit at all with all those beliavable characters, he was like an alien. Receiving an oscar for it says more about the oscars then about the movie role imo.

That's kinda how I saw him too... he never really "clicked" with his roles, as far as I remember. Even in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, which is his best performance that I recall... it was still slightly awkward watching him perform. Maybe it was just his face? Or maybe it was because he was overweight? Maybe being overweight just doesn't really go well with serious roles.

Off the top of my head I can't actually think of any fat actors that performed amazingly in a serious role. Maybe Brando, but that's more an exception than a good example. Hopefully someone can prove me wrong.
