Just a crazy idea: Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy some modeling clay fill the dip with it and then put your cloth mousepad over it?

im skeptical I could do a reasonable job... more accurately the desk is fake wood with some of the 'chunks' with different heigths everywhere along with a self made dip from trying to fix water swelling...


basically if I wanted the surface to be truly flat I'd have to relevel the entire damn area which seems a little rediculous

Cardboard perhaps? There has to be a ghetto solution to this, and one that allows you to use any pady you wish.

Perhaps try the diy shop and see if they have some thin plywood they could cut to size, to match your desk or pad. Perhaps some cheap, stiff laminates or some similar paneling material.

Buy a thin sheet of steel from the hardware store, fasten it it place over the dip (duct tape is prolly best and will cover the sharp edges) and then put whatever mouse mat you want over it. Solved! And for just a few bucks!

5mm ply-wood would be cheaper, safer and just as effective.

Except you'll have trouble finding that thin of ply that isn't warped/bent in some way, and that will be a lot thicker than a sheet of steel. And splinters, and a number of other poo-poo reasons my idea is better :-P but seriously, wood is fine if you can find something that'll work, just my first instinct was that you'd have better luck with metal.

steel can be used to make knives, which could be used as a tool or, more dangerously, a weapon!
