finally some fresh editing, the polished clean shit in here lately bores me to the guts. this video was a fest of violence. i wanna hit someone in the face now.
I would not vote this 10, but I think what mousestar said above resonates with many people. Most videos recently are very clean and professional, with just the right amount of editing, with mainstream music choices, etc. All this great production value is good, but I must admit artistically speaking, we are a bit at a stall.
Movies like ulbe's and this one are a big middle finger to - allow me a provocative term - disney-themed productions movie makers evolved to recently. But I don't think it's just them. It also comes from our cultural changes.
To me, it all boils down to which drammatic elements a movie wants to highlight. There has been a shift in the past as new Quakes came out. Quake 1 was gothic. Quake two was futuristic. Quake3 was sort of a mix, with the excuse of taking the best fighters etc. If you look at the maps, they vary, but I think the overall atmosphere had a strong balance. It's actually the same balance found in Doom 1 and 2. Quake Live sort of moved away from blood and gore, mainly for the T rating.
While I understand where QL went, I think artistically it suffered. In a way, Quake Live transformed the slaughter into a surgery. Esport, professionalism, mainstreams... all areas where this change is positive. But art? I am not sure. Blood and gibs are not just fun. They are direct references to the archetype of fighting and violence.
Allow me some impressionism. Quake is about running in the fucking forest to hunt the pray. I did not just own you, dodging your shots, coming close, and hitting a full sg shot. I also splattered your body all over the place. Fuck yeah! This is definitely an element I miss. I'm not asking to go the full route of soldier of fortune or manhunt, with body chopping etc, but blood, adrenaline, violence, have a strong connection to our natural condition, and if done right, they can be entertaining.

you lost me at " It also comes from how our culture is changing.". nodrugs - maybe a blood vessel burst on the flight or something?
I found the movie annoying at best, reminds me of the MTV most retarded era of 10 pictures per second brain melting music videos. because they make no sense and are damn boring otherwise!!
With that I meant what you can read below from quotes of Lam and Cityy. We are getting older and more mature. Gore and blood do not belong to where competitive Quake is going. And non-competitive quake almost does not exist anymore.
There has been a time when the best games out there were gore. I was a teen back then, playng in a metal band. This movie reminded me that. A bit of variety in movie style is welcome.
mmm... it's okish I think. You can easily watch a couple of episodes to know if you will eventually like it.
The main characters are historical, so you may have some spoiler there. I personally like how they portray vikings, showing their violent, fearless, and mystic culture. It's far from mind blowing, and I have yet to see the characters and drama to evolve, but on the plane I enjoyed it.
Interesting topic, I agree with pretty much all of it. However I want to touch the gibs subject. Some people in this forum (hi Lam) rate all movies 0 based on gibs and recently I've learned why:
(00:30:02) › Lam: gibs are for children
(00:30:07) › vitrae`PrT: LOL
(00:30:11) › vitrae`PrT: are u serious?
(00:30:13) › Lam: I'm too old to talk to emotional five-year-olds
(00:38:42) › vitrae`PrT: i didnt like your sport skins
(00:38:48) › vitrae`PrT: but i never stopped talking to u
(00:39:34) › Lam: if you can even think of that as fucking comparable to killing Quake...
(00:39:37) › Lam: just fo
(19:42:33) › @kryty: didn't think keel has blood
(19:42:41) › @kryty: and sparks.. that's more realistic
(19:42:43) › @kryty: :D
(19:42:47) › +vitrae`PrT: thought of that
(19:42:52) › +vitrae`PrT: but seeing how horrible sparks look i gotta go with gibs
(19:42:58) › +vitrae`PrT: sorry Lam
(19:43:02) › +vitrae`PrT: hope i dont kill quake in the proccess (ROFL)
(19:43:37) › @Lam: yes, you are killing Quake by pretending it's some shit game and not a proper esport title
(20:12:32) › @Lam: that's what gibs do - make people more aggressive, there's no place for this in true sports
(20:12:43) › +Insan3: gaming != sports != esports
some input from cityy:
(19:38:34) › +yy: gibs are for teens to be honnest
(19:38:37) › +yy: sparks are for esport
(19:39:24) › +yy: sparks look neutral and dont offend people in esports, eligible for all audiences
So, to conclude:
Quake is not meant to be violent. You should not frag people in game, it may be offensive. However if the player dies with some gay teleport effect behind it becomes a true esport. (c) Lam
Also true esports dont have blood or gibs. CS Quake UT Painkiller are not and never will be proper esport titles.
Sports are not violent. In football all disputs for ball or position are sweet. Have never seen any player with his forehead bleeding.
Also MMA is not a sport, boxing is a joke and rugby is for children.
Fishing, checkers, playing dice or domino however -> true sports
Stop killing quake friends - Dont use gibs ...
tnx for listening and tnx Lam for fighting against the violence quake displays in fragmovies, such deeds shall never be forgotten!
Hopefully next quake wont have any weapons and resembles more like pokemon so you can rate movies properly =)
vitz sir, its official, i luv u, u r da man, srsly. the other stuff sounded like comming from some teenagers that gonna try desperate to be grown ups.just today in the morningi realized: clanbase is closed, and in conclusion to that i realized, esports (and all the stuff behind ) was always just a trippy idea of some kids, that trying desperately to be some grownups (and defending theyre favorite game and playing that is just more then playin a game ). so o uc the circle of life? btw. best movie since ages, i really could watch till the end before dying of boredom.
yeah!!! .... also lets call the only rail mode for what it is then... its not "instagib" anymore... its "instaTeenRatedTeleportSparkyThingy" mode ffs!!!.
For that type of movies the Ulbe movies sets the standard and get a 10 for hilarity and originality if you ask me. By that I have to judge and criticize this movie for all it's short comings.
You are right about what you are saying about Quake and it's rockets, violence, gibs and action. The music has to suit the theme, which is why a fast paced heavy metal track works so well, but a popstyle dubstep track with a sensitive female vocal on top, sounds awkward and misplaced. Or a piece of gangster rap for that matter...
Although I can applaud this movie for having a metal track, it is such a horribly bad one that it doesn't help much.
A movie doesn't have to be all serious and polished like you said. But if that is the overall attempt, why has so much effort then been put into the camera angles? It doesn't give the impression that an attempt of a funny and unserious movie, but rather of a movie maker that set out to do one thing, then along the way gave up on the effort.
- bad music
- bad fonts
- obnoxious editing
- uninteresting frags
- bad image quality
+nice camera angles in the intro
All this does not add up to a score of 10. I cannot see how anyone, even if they do not agree with all my points, could rate it a perfect 10.
Maybe it should just be reduced to a matter of two 'Like!' and 'Dislike!' buttons in stead. If we are gonna rate every single fucking movie on ESR 10 automatically, why then even have the voting system? Movie makers must also be somewhat interested in serious critique and feedback and not just "10/10 didnt watch".
I think music suits the trashness. Anyway It doesn't matter how it sounds and looks like but how it feels at the end of the movie.
And it felt really good. This is the first fragmovie I downloaded after watching on youtube and I don't want to trash it.
Everything I didn't like about this movie, (music, gun position, enemy colors) is pretty subjective and not really important to my rating of the movie. Pretty decent content wise, and a very "fresh" editing style, something I haven't seen before in a quake video.
Thanks! Although I think you might exceed your allotted google drive bandwidth unless you have a business account. I'm not sure but you may want to check how that works.
OMFG. How did he pull this off?
That movie didn't just happen -- it's still happening! Staying in my head for some time.
You know when Ulbe's name pops up several times in a thread, the filmmaker's opening a rich vein. Tolystyitrol departs from Ulbe though in some striking ways:
Unlike Ulbe who revels in the surreal, flashing kaleidoscopic colors against absurd imagery and stop-flash, head-scratching foreground stills -- all the while promoting the "Ulbe brand"(usually some fish motif, etc.) -- Toly steers the mood into almost sinister territory, verging on creepy. He isn't afraid to evoke a Natural Born Killers kind of craziness, including those red flare "tunneling" sequences up and down hallways.
His frag/music syncs are like shotgun blasts. He's not looking for elegant angles or peekaboo shotmaking -- this guy's ramping up the carnage and inviting you along for one of the freshest(yes, THE operative word in this thread) but psychotic frag rides I've taken in a very, very populated Quakemovie amusement park.
p.s. Absolutely loved the punch-in-the-face ending followed by behind-the-scenes video editing/syncing. Masterful.
It's got a weird theme, it's got some shitty music, frags are not clearly visible at times, there are some painful fastforwards and the cfg sucks.
But this thing has something that most movies today don't have : attitude. it's unforgettable and easily stands clear out of the movie crowd. It's badass and has that idgaf vibe
solid 9/10. The violence with this one is strong. Really like it.. reminds me that quake is all about violence and massacre... not jumping sparking robots.
I'm sorry but the frags were really bad.
I thought my movie had bad frags but in this there was no singke scene that stuck out as movie material to me.
Also the sound quality was really bad I guess.
I liked the outro.
>the frags were really bad?
>sound quality?
>QUALITY?!
This is Trash, you're right)
Why people do not look to where it is necessary?))
If you do not like trash - do not look trash. Look glossy videos with proplayers frags under songs of Rihanna)
And I do not resent estimates - if it is 0 for you, then put 0. Zero for me even more than ten)
