trust me on this.

remove the plastic fan and anything plastic.
pre heat over to 180 degrees
wrap inside SHINY kitchen foil, put it in OVEN FOR ABOUT 10 MINS
Take out.
LET it COOL.
REPLACE FANS ETC,
PLUS IN AND SEE IF IT works, worked for me tHE OTher day on an old card.

Yep. My dad did this with an old 8800GTX (I think that's what it was) and it worked. So, worth a try!

Just google it and you'll find plenty of people have done it.

Tried it with two 8800 gtx, one GTX 280 back then and a 8800 GT too :) sigh. All worked, can confirm.

This is actually a solution. Alot of Gfx cards go too hot since the fans sog up by dust. The soldering on the board will be bad after a while, thus if you either do as you do or use a blowtorch, the metal will float back into place.

The old card is in clean condition, it shows a few wrong coloured pixels and it stops posting anything to the monitor after 5 minutes of use.

Won't a higher end of an older series outperform this? My brother recommended a 560ti but I wanna pay less. Thanks for the suggestion, that's the first contender :)

i suggest you paying a bit more for something better.
like a 650 ti or a 750, which are in the range of 130-150 euros, and are good cards. they can play every game up to date, and if you only play quake live i guess its more than enough.
stuff below x50 (640, 520, etc) are completly garbage for gaming :p

If he plays Quake Live only, a GeForce 6600 GT is more than enough.

I still have one for quakelive :-) but having constant 200 fps in tdm is not guaranteed.

Like suggested, bake it :) this will give you more time to decide on what replacement to buy (since this kind of fix usually doesn't last forever). It's also doable with a heat gun (if you have that) but I'm not sure where you'd have to aim though.

I have fixed one GPU and several laptop motherboards this way. And there's many many successful reports.

Thanks for the replys. About the cooking fix, I once did something similar to an X-box for a friend and that worked (wrap in towel, run for a while so it bakes then put it out in the cold - fix, win).

One the face of it the Radeon is better, but the 750ti can be overclocked like crazy and it uses a lot less electric which is something that appeals to me.

Both come out about the same price assuming you get a luxury 750ti and a basic 270. Nvidia card DOES NOT have sli though.
