Why use linear_mipmap_nearest for the texture mode? (as opposed to linear_mipmap_linear)

Why lodbias 2 for keel? lodbias -2 should fit the hitbox better, just checking to see if you had a specific reason. lodbias 2 is not bad or anything.

Why use playerlean 0? I find this one controversial and interesting.

There's plenty of like, unnecessary cvars in that config but really just nitpicking type stuff (example accelpower is 0, but accel is 0).

Also he has like shit amount of unnecessery cvars. For the clean version, I just open and delete the first things I see which are not valid in qlive and some unused aliases. But really he has messy cfg.

TankJR with lodbias 2 makes more sense because lodbias 2 apparently prevents TankJR from poking out of the hit cylinder.

Lodbias -2 makes more sense for keel as it helps him to fill in the hit cylinder better. Using lodbias 2 with keel is unusual since it results in a slightly "skinnier" keel that may slightly harder to see/hit. On the other hand, a smaller object being rendered might push someone to be more accurate since their mental error margin could be less.

For this reason something to try is to use the 'bones' character for an enemy model. I tried it myself and simply found it annoying and difficult to see, so perhaps it is past a trade off point. Shrug. There's really nothing overtly wrong with keel or TankJR.

The cypher config posted in this thread is super weird. Maybe he just did some things for the stream. Fov 110 is very hard to believe.

It was actually evol who was going to code the config sort/analysis program, but as far as I know he never finished it :-/

I have very close to enough programming ability to create such a program, but I have a problem with laziness ;-(

I asked him if this fov 110 is a mistake or sth, and he told me he just changed it, and liked thin shaft.

I prefer the "0 movement" feel of lean 0. I like when keel is straight like a rock :p. I find 1 a bit distracting.

Even if this is true, something like 0.7 should fix that. Using 0 is a deliberate decision against the player leaning at all :-)

0 is quite nice against opponents who are moving fast side to side =) heartless plays 1v1/2v2 ca for most part, which is heavily based around sitations like that

i much prefer 0 aswell, i don't need an indicator of player movement that, at the same time, fucks the model/hitbox relation up. when an enemy moves left, he moves left and i can already see that just fine :p

i also find it irritating as hell whenever an enemy is in the air. we don't have aircontrol in quakelive, i don't want models wobbling from side to side when it means next to nothing in the way they move.

Well if you look at other quake games namely 3 and qw , in 3 you can turn player lean off and on and qw doesn't have , so if you want a stable feeling between games you would use:

cg_showplayerlean 0 ( in q3 ( I don't think you can use middle values ) )
cg_playerlean 0 (in ql)

I love how his crosshair doesn't change colour when he hits anything. He doesn't need to see how much rocket dmg he just did. He knows it was direct.

By default it only changes red when there's a hit, which doesn't provide damage info.

Instead he uses the sound of the beep to indicate damage. I do the same, the crosshair changing color is distracting to me.

this is actually means his sens is around 40cm. sensitivity 0.9 at 1800= sens 3.6 @ 450. Considering his M_yaw setting his sens is like 2.5 at m_yaw 0.022, which is ~40 cm with abyssus.

better for him would be a second pc that is either connected by capturecard(pc2)<>hdmi<>gpu(pc1) so that his gaming pc isnt affected at all by the streaming process
or he would just spec himself on the 2nd pc, which would allow him to use a nice config

in the end i think the idea of streaming as a quakepro aint a good one. comentary and bandwidth limitations affect your gaming performance and the used configs scares viewers away. what other gamers do in LoL, WoW, SC2 or whatever translated really badly to quake imo.

yaw/pitch affects accel too and he has nice round numbers for sens this way.

Changing value affects mouse feel quite drastically, it would be hard to explain. But how do you know that it's the same, anyway?

yaw/pitch are just internal multipliers.
Sens 2 @ 0.022 = 4 @ 0.011. Same goes for accel ( not sure if it isn't squared or something, I'm rusty, zealot will pitch in if he feel like it )

It's way easier to find a round number for sens/accel that feels alright and mess around with yaw/pitch to tweak it than to stick to 3.25612 and accel 0.06857. These numbers beg to be tweaked even more.

I might be wrong and would love to be corrected if i am, but afaik using smth like 0.02197265625 plus x*0.25 sensitivity number is in fact the most precise thing
1st of all yaw is float so you can't just store exactly 0.022 there, and it's gonna be 0.02199999988079071044921875 if you write it so.
2nd afaik the Q3 angle discretisation is 2 bytes(65536) and knowing that yaw basically determines a minimal angle in degrees possible to turn with sensitivity 1 then 4*360/65536 is exactly 0.02197265625 which can also be stored in float.

with X*0.25 sensitivity numbers it's gonna be x/65536th turn every mouse count which is the most linear result possible

qw pro tip: by changing pitch/yaw to 1 you're saving the cpu the hassle of multiplying the sens and your input lag will decrease. now you'll just need to set the resolution to 320x240 and you can start aiming at pixels again.

the above can (could) be found in configs of rather good players, so... it must be the secret, and i'm not even making this up.

I believe that was fixed in modern clients like ezquake, but ya, some players still do it. It wasn't to prevent input lag, it was to prevent rounding which was apparently significant the way qw's mouse code worked.

QW's mouse code has all kinds of odd quirks not found in other games though, especially Q3/QL.

I've been looking into this actually, and I believe that when it calculates 360/65536 and jams it into a float, you get:

0.005493164 as opposed to 0.0054931640625, the remaining digits are not rounded but truncated.

0.005493164 has 7 significant digits which coincides with the 7.225 decimal digits of precision that a 32-bit float supports.

So I believe it's this number to which it is based, and multiplying this number by 4 you get: 0.021972656 .

A truncation to 7 significant digits results in 0.02197265

This isn't the way to do this though, the way to do it would be to use yaw/pitch 0.005493164 and compensate with whole number sensitivity values such that your sens would always be a multiple of 360/65536.

You also cannot use accel if you wish to maintain this mathematical property.

There are two problems with doing this though:

1. It doesn't really matter. Although this would prevent the 'rounding' to the nearest 360/65536 degree turn, this is probably just completely negligible.

2. It doesn't really matter, again. What's shown on the screen in pixels already deviates mathematically from the math involved in the handling of quake guy angles. If you used 800x600 for example, at fov 90, you'd have 3200 pixels in a 360. Yet those 3200 pixels are broken up into 65536 different angles, an ugly 20.48 angles available for each pixel.

You can try compensating for this as well, but needing everything except the fov to be in whole numbers places a lot of constraints on the resolution/fov that can be used.

So for example:

(360/F) * H = N

Where:

F = Horizontal Fov (cg_fov)
H = Horizontal resolution in pixels
N = Number of pixels in a 360

This means that N must divide 65536 evenly and be an integer. So I believe this limits N to a factor of 65536. Its factors are: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536.

H will be an integer.

If we can avoid it, we would also like a fov value that does not require significant digits past its truncation point for a 32-bit float. Might not be necessary, just you know, would be nice :-)

We also need a value for F that is both within the range that the game allows, and in a range we might actually want to use (difficult!).

Take 800x600 for example.

(360/F) * 800 = 1024 F = 281.25 (out of range of max fov of 130)
(360/F) * 800 = 2048 F = 140.625 (out of range of max fov of 130)
(360/F) * 800 = 4096 F = 70.3125 (yich)

Obviously the next value will be lower, and already 70.3125 is a very low fov.

Let's try 640x480 for fun:

(360/F) * 640 = 1024 F = 225 (out of range of max fov of 130)
(360/F) * 640 = 2048 F = 112.5 (not bad!)
(360/F) * 640 = 4096 F = 56.25 (ouch)

On a side note I've actually always wondered what it would be like to play on a screen with 16384 horizontal pixels, a sens of 1, m_yaw 0.005493164, and a mouse with a high enough cpi to get a comfortable sens with it, for example 6660 cpi would be 25 cm/360. With fov 90 I'd have one mouse count per pixel per quake guy turn. Side pixels anyway, I think to do center pixel I would need 65536 horizontal res, but I digress.

I can't help but wonder if that would feel special in some way. Probably just seeing QL in 16384 res would be strange enough that my experience would be dominated by that, not to mention what sort of refresh rate I could get at that res..

uhm, nothing gets truncated, 7 digit decimal precision just means that for ANY decimal number you can find a (binary float)->(decimal) number which got first 7 fractional digits being the same(and rest smaller digits can be whatever). That doesnt mean that there're no 7+ digits numbers which could be fit in(especially assuming that they are pure binary fractions). That's the point of float, it's basically a sum of different 2^(-1) to 2^(-23) numbers and exponent showing where the dot should be.
If it's 2^(-23) you can easily define it 1:1 with float 0.00000011920928955078125 and this is 17 decimals
while if you take something like 0.1 you're not gonna get this exact number with float no matter how hard you try, you're gonna finish with something really close and having at least 7 decimal digits as 0.1000000 you want but not 0.1 in the end(0.100000001490116119384765625)

and 0.0054931640625 or 0.02197265625 are done easily
float for 0.0054931640625 would be 3BB40000
for 0.02197265625 it's 3CB40000

and as for the rest concerning resolution I didnt even read cause you're not counting the fishbowl effect. Stuff like 4*90fov*horizontal resolution is nonsense

You're inputting it as a string into the game though, I think it's going to just truncate if it's > than the digits it will take for a float. You're right though, the 360/65536 is handled differently, but it might not be possible to input this m_yaw.

As for the horizontal resolution thing, it does represent an average. Do you want center pixels?

From my guide (www.regurge.at/QL/Lorfa) (and formula by Injx) :

Input algorithm looks like this:

dy = M (B + (A(v-c))^(P-1)) dx

dx is counts, dy is degrees. M is m_yaw.

Therefore increasing m_yaw increases both the base sensitivity _and_ the accel, as they are multiplied by it. So doubling m_yaw doubles the base sensitivity and the accel.

This is also done for the pitch.

That round numbers theory makes no sense at all. Why would it be more complicated to find a cute round number with a non-default m_yaw value?

Cypher tried many different accel and sens values (new mouse, different DPI, tweaks) over the years but 'always' kept the same m_yaw and m_pitch values. It's safe to assume that the crucial thing is actually m_yaw 0.018, the rest being secondary.

He had the same value 10 years ago btw, I guess he pretty much always played like that. They are his 'default values', kinda. I wouldn't be surprised to find them in some old Q3 cfg from his older brother. :)

Because you set the sens/accel to something, yaw/pitch to something, have no clue what it does and no way to compare it to other players if you don't know how the engine works. Also, player x who had no fucking clue what it does used to use that - this describes most of the eastern european scene a few years ago.

If it does the job, it does the job. Even if it doesn't fucking do it it'll still dot it better better than a value with 5decimals just cause the numbers aren't begging you to put them out of their misery.

I've lowered my yaw/pitch values myself a few days ago (I often do that but I always went back to default so far) and instead of accel 0.07 I now use 0.1, and voilà, it's not like my previous value was perfect or something and had to be replicated exactly.

He just used it for chilling in FFA and testing new settings, he change mouse settings very often. But as ashy said above, he didn't played with this settings at the 125fps cup vs k1llsen. If he was realy playing with 42 cm and very low accel his movements and rockets would have differed a lot from what we can see from him usualy.

I tried his settings with a wmo (used offset 0 tho) and its alright for rockets and flick rails. And if I remember correctly, he used slow sens and low accel in UGC 2011 as well - still had amazing air rockets and smooth lg tracking. Its just the way he moves his mouse.

Still I dont know why would anyone believe the 110 fov BS. Apparently hes been always using 90, just check out the vods on his twitch channel.
