I can't tell you how much this upsets me, even though I don't use windows 8.

Povohat told me on irc that it may be possible to create a physical filter that the mouse would plug in to that would identify it as a usb 2.0, or do whatever it needs to use a higher refresh rate. This would be a less convenient, physical solution though.

I guess what needs to be done is to run USBPORT.SYS through hexrays or something similar, like reverse engineer it completely and look for either the check for usb 1.x or for a fixed polling rate value.

Of course if you manage to successfully modify usbport.sys, not sure how to go about loading it.

Actually since you have windows 8, can you post your usbport.sys here? Maybe someone with reverse engineering skills can try tampering with it and see what happens.

Maybe it has to be modified in memory, which would require some memory dumps and debugging and such. It's really quite over my head :-/

It's incredibly irritating because it would take microsoft like 20 min to just add an option somewhere in mouse settings for polling rate, while it could take a qualified person months to engineer some ridiculously complicated hack to get it going.

All for what reason, because of the usb spec that no one really cares about? Because more polling takes more CPU even though it would be totally optional to poll over the default? Or is it because they think a higher polling rate will explode the usb ports?

I don't know, but someone deserves a punch in the nose over this imo.

I think that's the fix for the glitch in windows 8.1 (was actually a feature that MS thought would be a good idea) that prevented mice from going over 200hz on mouse calls.

OP is looking for the USB overclock utility who's traditional application that worked for win7 and prior doesn't work in win8 because MS changed the USB windows file (can't remember the name).

The only way you can do this right now is to purchase a fatal1ty branded asrock motherboard that comes with the fatal1ty mouse port. Its poll rate can be adjusted using the f-stream utility.

Yes, I'm sure fatal1ty woke up one morning, decided to rescue Windows 8 gamers, learned Windows driver development, electric engineering, built a motherboard and wrote the drivers and then forced Asrock to distribute it with a hefty price price tag. Also why don't other manufacturers have a solution? I think it's fair to assume that Fatality - as a gamer - had something to do with it. As in: making sure it included the features that are important for a gamer.

The solution is not a 'Fatality board', the solution is an Asrock board, developed and built and sold by for a profit, specifically for gamers. The only thing Fatal1ty (tm) has to do with it, is a sticker, and perhaps he confirmed what everyone making gaming products has known for years, that gamers like higher poling usb ports for mice.

Any reason, at all, to use windows 8.1?

Im still trying to figure that one out. In the meantime back to 7.

I tried 8 (not 8.1) in dual boot, seemed more annoying than better, so I switched back. Exactly like with Vista.

Not that I can see. It's annoyingly touchscreen-centric out of the box and has compatibility issues still. I've used a few laptops that were running it and I couldn't see any advantage over Win7.

I'll stay on Win7 for my Windows needs until it hits end of life and probably beyond that a little bit as well.

Or Windows 9, or something else, since MS new CEO should be less silly.

Install Classic shell then everything is like Win 7.

And you can still have the tiles menu, it's mostly because of WIndows Phone 8 and 8.1 and the tablets, I have a Windows Phone so I see why Microsoft made that move. I can find the same apps etc. It's actually a bit like the sidebar on Vista and 7 or any sidebar you install by yourself, excepted it's not a sidebar, it contains apps and you can access stuffs quickly from it. If you don't like it then don't use it. Simple.

I find my system faster on Win 8.1 than on Win 7. And I don't use SSD, I can't tell you the difference if you own one then. Windows 8.1 still has some rare problems like the 500hz problem in this thread, but at least for me everything works flawlessly :/ I find everything more reactive too.

Only thing I regret is transparency I guess. But not many people care about this.

That's kind of my problem with it I guess. It just goes against every idea I have about what is good software and what isn't, philosophically as well as practically. I don't want an OS that's trying to be great for desktops, laptops, phones, and tablets. I want a desktop OS on my desktop. I want a mobile OS on my mobile devices. Not some amalgamation of both of them pointlessly running on everything.

I understand your point totally, and I find their choice very weird. I understand they try to make synchronization between devices and accounts faster, easier, etc, but the problem is it's far from perfect ='D even I own other MS devices I almost never have to check the apps from the tile menu. Phone is phone, pc is pc, etc.

Anyway I don't try to sell you 8.1 honestly if you are perfect on 7 there is no need to switch, you're just going to be annoyed installing everything and copying everything for not much.

only if you play Crysis or BF4 or smthing like that AND you have 4770K or higher AND you have 2xGTX780 or higher then yes it worth it. You will get significant FPS boost on those games.

man i have a macmini, i did the bootcamp and i installed windows8.1, but it SUCKS fucking LOT. I use a Samsung tv as monitor and on windows8 i did not match the resolution of the mac to my tv, i tried all resolutions and none worked. so as i saw that this OS was so sucked that i realized that i should install win7. so i did it i installed win7ultimate and EVERYTHING works now, even the resolution problem. so my advice is for you is to use win7.
