I don't understand why the default in race is all weapons. Lets take everything amazing and beautiful about the QL movement, say screw that, and make the focus on RJ'ing as fast as possible to the end.

Did people not watch defrag videos or join defrag servers? Some maps had weapons but you had to pick them up and ammo was limited.

I was super pumped when I heard about Race, then realized it was just about RJ'ing everywhere. I didn't see any runs being done without weapons.

Yes, but most people think that race is defrag now. They are taking the very simplified version of defrag (race) and they are thinking that thats the extent of quakes movement. It is dissappointing, because with the ql platform it couldve united the the defrag players. I like race, but its as moto1 says.

As an x-defragger, it really doesn't hurt at all. In fact I find it pretty helpful. Because of Race, people have actually become a lot more aware of the existence of Defrag. Not only that, but Race is pretty fun with rockets. Would take a lot more time for the new generation of Quakers to master strafe-only routes on a lot of these maps and even come close to competing with top times. With rockets only, it significantly reduces the time it takes for a player starting race to get to a point where they are achieving competitive race times.

What we have on QL is actually a highly sociable, fun and moderately competitive game mode.

As others are mentioning, I do hope we see some dedicated Race maps as well as just more of the standard maps with checkpoints.

but if you wanted defrag that actually focused on the movement and all the advanced mechanics behind it (clipping, OB, cj, etc) then race is a big POS because it does anything but focus on those mechanics

edit: yes you can callvote no weapons and setup a server with a bunch of settings to get the typical defrag setup, but it's not the default and it's not the norm. race now is fastcaps all weapons, which in my experience was never a popular mode on q3df.org

I understand that it's very different. You can do strafe-only runs which still requires a lot of skill in QL. You don't have the same maps as Defrag that have weapon/item pickups etc, which isn't a bad thing.

Some of the 'advanced mechanics' in Defrag are a little bit obsurd to be honest. I don't think that overbounce is that great to have. If anything, it's all far to complicated to ever be considered a mode that could attract any significant user base. Clipping is something used in Race. Circle jumps are definitely still useful on certain maps (I get that pre-runs in the QL Races can sometimes be a bit too lengthy).

In my experience of defrag, fastcaps and rocket runs were always extremely popular. You'd have a clear 'elite' who would only do certain runs that had the right components, but catering for just them isn't the best thing.

I don't think that Defrag having tens of thousands of different maps was actually a good thing. It diluted the 'competition' so much that if someone saw a record on a map wasn't beatable by them immediately, then they'd go straight to a different map. What in the fuck reason would they need to put in many hours to learning a map that they never felt they had a chance on anyway? It would be nice to see another 50 maps get added to the Race pool. Especially ones that are dedicated race maps.

because it's borderline not defrag. an analogy would be if we had duel in q3, and "duel" comes out in QL but with all weapons available on spawn, and item timers were on your hud

yes it's still "duel", yes it's "fun for everyone", but the core focus is VERY different compared to the original duel mode. this is how I feel with defrag

yeah there were lots of maps but the comp solution to that was DFWC which did pretty well

Ofc, it was all very fun :) Although I really think that with out all those tiny additions, the physics alone is insanely fun.

DFWC's had a good system, but also the maps were hard as shit sometimes. Especially when I tried some of them out when I started Defrag. A lot of the maps I wouldn't even be able to finish.

High skill ceiling is fun, especially when you manage to make it to the top. But gaming has grown out of all that =/ Which really does suck. People want a quick buzz and dont want to feel like they have Mt Everest to climb before they're even considered mediocre. With Race at the moment, it isn't too impossibly difficult to become competent at the mode. How ever it is still very difficult to be fantastic at. There is definitely satisfaction to be had when you see your name near the top of the leaderboards :)

Now that Race leaderboards on QL only show the top 100. It's actually a reasonable goal for new-comers to aspire to get on the board and progress through it.

I don't know if you play Race at the moment, but you should certainly give it a go :) There are quite a few defraggers who play it

Hopefully soon race will get some of its own maps. Then I think it would become a "recognised" gametype. At the moment I don't see many people playing it, but I could be wrong. I just don't see the attraction of racing around maps that weren't intended for speed at all :/

User script 465415 integrates the alternative race leader boards into Quake Live's "Community / Race Leaders" screen: PQL strafe only.
By clicking the All maps checkbox you get a list with your top scores on all maps instead of the top 100 list of the current map.
The database is updated automatically, but with a random delay. You can click the "Update player" button to force scanning a player's matches for new race results.
