I think Tosssspot might be the most hype Quake commentator, he can clearly be sensational, too bad hes a sellout like almost everyone else in ESports, pretending to give a shit about horrible games just to be able to cast and get some spotlight

To be honest I feel mostly sorry for Tosspot that a cool dude like him has to cast CS to make a living. I would rather work at McDonalds than casting CS. Tosspot always seems more lively casting Quake than the snoozefest CS. 2gd falling asleep casting CS says everything about the game. I mean even a narcoleptic doesnt fall asleep casting Quake or Street Fighter (unless it's some really low-tier games) but with CS, casters have to force themselves REAL HARD to stay awake, even if it's the god damn finals of a big tournament, it wouldnt surprise me if they use drugs to manage it.

You cant make a diamond out of a smelly dog turd no matter how hard you try with fake hype casting. Atleast Redeye did as much as admit he miss casting Quake, he didnt say he was tired of watching borefest Starcraft matches, but it was in the subtext. Thorin seems like an intelligent guy and his questions are not boring run of the mill bs you usually get from esports interviewers (like sports commentators "how does it feel?" -oh it feels great), he needs to smile more though, Im getting a serial killer vibe at times :P

Has it ever occurred to you that some people actually enjoy CS? If you actually listened to the interview you'd realise that he doesn't rely on it for income.. he does it because he actually has the freedom to choose when he casts. So, obviously he enjoys it himself.

I do agree with you on a certain level, a lot of very creative and cool things are filtered out by trash (my view on popular music). How ever I can't say that this topic is relevant at all to Tosspot. He does a job and that's the end of that really... It's not even his day-job to do casting, he just does it when the opportunity and desire arises which I think is very cool. A position I'd love to see myself in at some point in life :)

Okey I watched some faceit cs matches with tosspot commentating, he was doing a good job and seemed to enjoy it. The danish guy wasn't that great but whatever. I retract my statements about Tosspot for what it's worth, I'm sure he would gladly cast more Quake if there were more big events left

It was pretty sad when Tossspot tried to hype some Katowice matches which were among the worst matches ever seen. The Starcraft 2 finals was a horrible Protoss vs Protoss match, the stream monsters were literally keeling over and falling asleep from boredom

There was none. The nature of Quake makes it impossible to get such boring finals as you see in Starcraft or CS. The closest thing would probably be a 3-0 roffelstomp, but cant mention any final in particular

Av3k vs Strenx, in Strenx's first lan final (cant remember event).

Strenx put his headphones on the wrong way round, and the audience and casters were just left dissapointed, deflated and perplexed as to why his game was so poor.

Imo, this led to a pretty boring final, especially after the way Strenx beat Fox and others, in an amazing manner, to get there in the first place.

I do completely agree with your premise however; quake is very, very rarely boring at the highest levels. Whenever I show non-quake friends/gamers some top level casts of lan's, they don't have a clue what's going on, but are continually in awe at the shots being made, and are never 'bored'.

thats the rub right there, Quake has a huge potential as a crowd-pleaser but so few are even aware of its existence. A casual audience would understand the basic premise of duel, you pick up weapons and try to kill the other guy. I find the same intuitive direct appeal in some fighting games, especially Street Fighter. If you're casual and watching Starcraft or Dota or some shit it's just a clusterfuck on screen and you have no idea what's going on. There's just something lacking on a very fundamental level, esports should have a direct appeal like football, basketball, badminton, table tennis, boxing etc, where you clearly see the skill involved, and you grasp it on an intuitive level, I have no idea why esports devolved into this worthless mess, I guess the fanbase is just not on par, teenagers and casual console gamers killed it

Teenagers and casual console gamers didn't kill Esports, Esports is much much larger than what it was when Quake was in the limelight.

Quake fell by the wayside because it didn't provide anything for casual gamers. No battle.net 1.0 , no in-game voice , no proper matchmaking etc etc etc.

The vast majority of people who watch specific Esports are people who play those exact games casually. When the game has next to nothing to offer that part of the player base then the game won't thrive as an Esport.

Take the comparison between bnet1.0 and bnet2.0 and how often people talk about SC2 already stagnating/dying after only being out a few years in comparison to BW.

Now there's matchmaking and ladders and all that jazz though, but maybe the game was always too hardcore for pussy-whipped casuals
