okay, why do they care though? did carmack write the VR code in working hours or his own time? yes idsoftware was on a downward spiral, but after they were acquired by zenimax, it really went to shit at id.
i dont agree zenimax is being a patent troll though. There might be something to it. Is the carmack reverse owned by id or carmack? since this could be a matter of that sort.
Carmack's reverse was invented by two engineers at Creative Labs, who file for (and were granted) a US patent on the idea, before he independently came up with the same idea. So he doesn't own that idea, and infact ended up settling with creative to be allowed to use it in doom3 (hence OpenAL/ EAX support etc)
That has nothing to do with this though. It does sound to me like Zenimax do have some grounds though - eg, the kickstarter campaign and various media coverage featured D3 BFG, which was their IP, and I'm sure carmack contributed lots of input - eg his profiling and analysis of displays was while he was working for them, and was a direct input into the OR design
i dont really take carmack for a liar tbf. hes just a straight up science geek who has no interest in such things. if he did somehow use code he wasnt supposed to, i would bet he did it on accident ^^
The case is not about questioning Carmack's morals. It's about IP rights. Accidents, told truths or lies, scientific and moral integrity all mean jack shit.
They might have something, at that time carmack was an employee of Zenimax, there is a strong argument for suggesting anything you do on company time on their hardware etc is owned by the company.
Carmack has gotten into trouble over software patents before with Creative and the OPENAL stuff via Doom 3. Hence why you realistically needed creative openAL sound card for quake 4.
They are obviously hoping because there is so much money involved zuckerburg will throw them a bone to keep them happy if they can make half a case.
With the right amount of money and legal team you can make anyone else's life difficult. Especially in the good old US of A.
For the sake for a few hundred k in legal fee's, Zenimax probably think its worth testing the waters. From a purely financial POV they are probably right.
they simply try to make money, oculus rift was acquired for 2 billions or something by facebook ... if they are succesful with their lawsuit they will get tens of millions of dollars ... easy way to earn money and its probably not unlikely carmack wrote code for oculus while under contract for id ... but still its difficult to prove
The first thing that came to my mind was the esports journalist called 'Carmack'.
It didn't make any sense to me.
Then I clicked on the link and saw John Carmack's (read: God) picture. Still didn't make any sense to me. "These are two different people!" I said in my mind.
Only after reading the article did I connect the dots and it became less absurd to me.
Either this thing is still absurd, however, slightly less so than Carmack being sued by Zenimax, or I could seriously use some sleep. Or possibly both.
patents in software enginering are kinda stupid anyway.
I mean there are only so many ways to solve the same (detailed) problem..... So when you confront 10 programmers with the same problem... it's highly likely that 5 of them will have the exact same solution.
I get the feeling the only tech companies that will be around in the next 10 yrs or so are the ones that have successfully sued their competitors more than they were sued. That whole apple/samsung thing (didn't follow it, only heard a few stories on the radio, but the patents apple was suing over, jesus h christmas), and this. If you can't beat them, sue em!
Right.... I think your memory is shit.
The first years of OSP the average ping was 50-60, and most people didn't have 120fps. And it played insanely good.
QW I dunno about I haven't played that online :>
That your experience was bad is because you're used to QL and it's very different.
If you would 'be used to q3' again then you might have a more subtle view on the matter.
The Q3 netcode has some nice benefits over the QL one, as the other way around also holds.
But that you're blinded by your own experience means that you won't consider the possibility of the Q3 netcode being better in some aspects....
Q3 netcode was shit IMO. I still remember how in TDM online everything went floaty like playing in syrup during intense action. Like at the Quad room at the two minute mark.
That sounds more like an issue due to other reasons than the netcode.
Possibilities contain:
FPS drops on your side,
Too little bandwidth (too low rate and or maxpackets) on your side or on the server side,
Server having too few resources (mainly computing power)
Do keep in mind that current internet connections (in general) are 50 to 1500 times faster than most connections in 99.
Aka I started to play on an ISDN connection which had 64kbit, now I have 100mbit (aprox 1500 times faster)
Similar (bit smaller) increases have happened for computing power, although one can express that more difficult because of how the technology changed.
Based on the stupid patent logic once you acquire experience inside a company you cannot use that experience outside the company. All your brains are belong to us.
Looks like the makers of Quake Champions won't be short of money now. Hopefully they invest in their quake franchise and hope it includes some competitions!
