I got banned from stat-padding when my opponent forfeited a few times a bit too early on in the game, for their liking anyway. Not that I could control that D: Got a 3-day ban and got ignored by their support team, sponge and syncerror when I tried appealing to it :L

yeah I've done it to him before, probably 6 months ago now, still came onto my server and harassed me about it about a month or 2 ago, trying to shame me for doing it, in front of several other players also, was really fucking pathetic.

you might say to me that I'm in no position to call him pathetic, as what I did is totally unsportsmanlike, I accept that, but its not about the elo for me, you could take it back off of me a few days later and give it back to 108, I don't really care.

elo's purpose for me is to roughly gauge the skill level of a player, and i usually check a players name if i don't know who i am playing, in order to get a rough idea of what i am up against. elo is a statistic, but for a lot of people it has become more of a quake live e-peen. So, my reason for doing it is to show the attitude of, in my opinion, a lot of players in the community at the moment, whose entire game seems to revolve around the elo system and their "preservation" of it. 108's behaviour exemplifies this.

firstly, if we were still playing quake 3 and I kicked, for example, 108, off of my server, none of this would have ever been a problem, I would've probably been mocked for being a rager, it would have been regarded that he won the match, and that was the end of that.

However, since the implementation of elo, i have noticed that A LOT of players play one game, they just leave (depending on how close/tense it was), update their elo and join another server. (I can't say that it happens every time people leave, as some people may need to go/eat or whatever, but its obvious when you watch their qlranks page when it says they're on a different server a few moments later)

as someone who has been playing for the majority of 5 years this is a seriously depressing attitude to see, besides the fact that after losing a close game i want to retry and prove to myself that I can win, it seems that peoples maintenance of their elo score is more important than actually improving by playing people of the same level of skill. At least, for me, that is how I improved vastly in the beginning and i have countless demos and screenshots from 3/4 years ago of playing the same people in duel daily.

you could say i am as bad as the "elo whores" themselves for my behaviour (even worse, i don't care), but its gotten to the stage where i am not bothered to play anymore because its extremely frustrating when players come onto my server and do this.

How is it pathetic to warn other people that you Have done this in the past and possibly will do it again to them? You deserve to be shamed about that infront of others so they are prepared to what might happend to them.

That leaves only 1 possible situation where i can have joined your server, won a match and then disconnected afterwards.

Elo is a good thing. Right now I get the best experience because of elo, because I dont stumble into 2k elo players only to get crushed. Now I'm not saying that playing stronger opponents is bad or not, but playing matched ones or slightly stronger ones provides for an amazing experience. Anyways, I dint really get mad at all, its just some people and the way they approach things is interesting. How do they deal with their failures in life is what I'd like to know.

I totally agree with what you said. Problem is that I feel a lot of players don't seem understand the whole point of the elo system. Its a statistical calculation of your skill amongst the rest of the population of players. However people seem to treat their own elo points as if they're poker chips, they'll risk a few in order to get a few, and if they win, they'll cash in their points (leave the server). In my opinion, this is the worst way of improving, and the slowest too, considering you have to completely rejoin a server wait for the other player to be ready etc. each time, and can base a lot of your confidence in skill on your elo score.

When I got from 1200 to 1600 i got happy, because I got gratification of sorts that I have improved, since not only I have started to beat opponents that I could not before, but yeah, my ELO reflects it. Now theres no point in shitting ur pants when you lose a game, cause its not ELO that wins the game. hehe. :) Truth

I do, but it has gotten to the stage where I don't mind, because I'm pretty fed up with the attitude of a lot of duellers. You can say I'm just being a stubborn little prat about the whole thing, whatever, but to be honest, I feel so strongly about this problem that, for me, it's a pretty good return.

There are a few duellers out there who don't really care if I have kicked someone off my server, they just want to play, and that's exactly what I want to do, so it does work out. The people who want to hog their elo can do that and not join my server, and the people who just want to have a few fun games versus me can join any time.

I don't know for sure if it would work but I think that if the server is unranked you don't have to fear disciplinary measures from id software. Unranked matches don't affect your stats so it could hardly be considered stats padding.

That said, I think QLRanks still considers unranked matches so you'd still have to deal with the same attitude from other players. Also you might have more trouble attracting players to an unranked server.

But heh, think about it.

It still counts as stats padding, or at least it should, because QLRanks still accounts for unranked games (even cpm gamemode). My method is pretty rudimentary, and isn't effective all the time (sometimes I get so sick of waiting, I'll play against people that I know are more than likely going to leave after one game).

The only real proper solution is to implement the gamemode that I mentioned before, BO3 games (set to a single map or different, make it a preference), if you quit before winning two games, you lose. It would have to be listed under duel servers though , because I'm certain nobody would look for BO3 duel gamemode, as no one would ever join those games (or the spawner would have to wait a long time).However, it would have to be regarded as a different mode on QLRanks in order for it to work.

Sure it would still be stat padding but not from the point of view of id software : they aren't running QLRanks and shouldn't take that into account.

Luke is only human. I'm sure we've all done/said silly things in a duel, however, that does not give you the right to start brandishing hateful distaste toward him.

On the other hand. I've been in spectate whilst in the company of 108 and he came across as a bit of a "wanker" as you would call it. I'm sure 90% of the entire quakelive player-base has at one time or another came across as being a "wanker" either by raging and directing their hate towards their opposing enemy or doing something as incredulous as what Luke did himself.

Also at the end of the day - it's only a game.
