all of this is so very ambitious. I have fear that this project will simply consume too much time to be relevant.

In a nutshell 30 first mins

- robots instead of human models
- 4 classes with unique weapons
- all weapons stronk (non-tier-like)
- robots have special abilities, such as creating decoy of yourself

I'm intrigued by the class system and the unique weapon design. Should there be more strategic mode like CTF that could create fortress-like depth. In duel match-ups of the classes such as in starcraft or street fighter would be very fresh angle, if balanced well.

About the only thing I don't really like are the dipping rockets.

I on contrary like it, would like even bigger drop rate on some alt-fire mode, or just other very similar weapon, as he said that those are easy to make and playtest.

i also likie the dipping rocket system, but i would have normal fire for straight rockets and secondary for dipped (reminds me of q4 napalm gun, which was perfect for campers, flushing them out hiding below ledge height).

It's kind of like Mortar in Xonotic, it feels very rewarding if you hit an airshot with it.

In my limited Xonotic experience, I found I hit way more air shots with the mortar than with rockets or electro. It's hella fun!

Especially bouncing the mortar off the walls or the ceiling and getting a frag just on the fuse. =D

I have the same feeling, it is overly complex, need to simplify. They have some good ideas though.

I think it's good to have many ideas at the beginning of the creative process. Over time the excess will be removed and the better ideas will be fleshed out to the fullest. Here is to hoping, anyway. No one wants a cluster of different games, different gametypes, different weapons, different abilities, and segregated communities.

Sure there are no guarantees, but it seems like he's really going to give it a shot, and probably avoid the usual traps of remaking Quake / making something no Quake player could like. In any case, this has cured my cynicism about 2GD the dota guy who followed the money and abandoned Quake.

Imagine, one players can pick Semi-aircontrol CPM like movement player, other semi UT/WSW walljump player and so on. Hard to balance, but it's possible.

I didn't listen to show yet, just red few comments. I would love to see fps + dota/lol game. I would like to have option before match to pick some few skills (etc, make you invisible for 2-3 sec, or use big jump once in a minute, sprint for 3-5 seconds and so on..) ,or ability to pick different guns in match, etc you are picking RL , one player have 150 dmg, with big splash and lower speed, other have 90 dmg , but fast speed , one player picks LG, have 15 dmg but without truelighing option (lg trailing) and other 9 dmg but without trailing.

I think this can attrack kids, not just few thousands 25+ old fps players.

yes no balancing fuck shit, that comes later if there is a necessity to do so.

The skill choosing could be done something like it's in RPG games. You'll be given X amount of points you can spend on different movement mechanics, items, weapons, armor and weapon stats etc.

So for example 2 players have 25 points. First one picks silent walking, aircontrol and strafejumping which costs him 2+5+2=9 points and now has 16 left to spend on items, armors (max armor limit?), weapons (pick a weaponset from a bigger list) etc. The other one wants walljumping, strafejumping and crouchsliding which costs him 3+2+3=8 points and now has 17 points left for other stuff.

And to balance this you can just change the amount one feature/item costs so you couldn't have all over-powered things together (for example air control is pretty overpowered so it costs more but this means you'll probably have to give away from armor/damage points or can't buy as many items due to lesser points).

And the more there are different weapons (basically steal them from every possible DM game) and items (steal them from every other game so we could have 3 second invis, smoke grenades, 3 second no damage walls etc etc) the bigger the possible variation of different strategies. Would be interesting just to play around and see how different combinations work.

How will the different robots work in tournaments? I mean in matchmaking he said you picked one robot and you will get matched against another player, playing the same robot. But what happends in the finals of a tournament if the players play different robots? That could be really unballanced. Or will there be one specific robot for competitive play?

It seems like he is adamant for robots to fight other robots of the same weight so maybe he is intending for weight class tournaments.

Like a light tourney, a mid tourney and a heavy tourney.

Seems like a shame and I assume everyone will just play light anyway.

the way I see it, his game is just an engine and a matchmaker. you paste whatever mod/set of rules you want on top of it, be it vq3, cpm or whatever. people would all play reborn and have that workshop making easy money but would still be able to enjoy "their" game and hop into another mod seamlessly

one robot = one mod, I think he'd be pretty hard to balance those to fight in the same arena

I cant see it being good for the game to have it split into a huge series of mods/bots without any core robots that are "official" in some sense

So while servers will be able to host their own robots with their own rules and skills and whatever, official servers and tournaments would have to use the "official" robots

No I'm pretty sure the plan is that, the heavier the robot, the easier the movement. And vq3 movement is certainly hard enough already that it won't be for noobs.

How I can see it is that the lighter robots will be the ones harder to master so they'll probably be where all the quake fans will endup playing and it'll probably be the highest tier in the game.

But then again I hope CPM style doesn't become the popular one. I think the best 1v1 arena was always vq3 style :D. Takes less mechanics but way more thinking and strategy and stuff. I don't like CPM because of fastswitching and air control which is really hard to play on mousewheel weapon switching :D

have to respectfully disagree here, it's a lot easier to win games in cpm without having top notch combat skills, because the armor system rewards control a lot more than what you see in vq3

i'd say strategy is more important in cpm, whereas the balance in vq3 leans more towards perfect execution

I can't really speak on that matter but I'll trust you on this. My cpm scene knowledge is far too close to 0 to have anything to say other than speculation. When I think about cpm I see people running and spamming around the map for the entire game and it only just feels like a clusterfuck to me. Maybe it's because it's too damn fast for me to grasp xD

in cpm 200 / 200 is more health than 200 / 200 of ql / vq3, in vq3 if you have the wrong weapon out it can be more punishing than in cpm.

I think dumb players should be able to win too. I am not saying cpm is for retards, each player develops different styles after all, i am just saying that doesn't matter how much you know about the game strategy / tactics that if you didn't train mechanical skills it will be helpless at most situations. This happens in real sports, i am pretty sure that cristiano ronaldo or messi aren't smarter than any of us, they just have incredible techniques and physical condition cos they practiced them more than anyone else. You see many people relating quake to chess and that's plain wrong, even if they are fine motor skills they are your own movement and that's why you have different handwriting than the rest of the people.

In my opinion Reborn is leaving behind a little bit the pure deathmatch to introduce aspects of other games like LoL, dota, hawken, etc... It gets closer to pokemon or card games than real sports (your style is conditioned on the character/robot you pick instead of developing your own withing the standards given by the game). Execution goes before tactics/strategy and these just appear when two players are about the same level.


but again, this is just my own opinion, probably influenced by all these years playing basketball. And despite this wall of text i wish the best of luck to this project, the fact that i am more of a reflex guy doesn't make me anti-reborn.

I played Gunbound Thor's Hammer back in 2004. At some point the versions changed and it went to shit. I guess the game's popularity dropped too and there were not enough left when youtube caught on to post good videos.

I imagine it would work a lot like crylink in Xonotic, you can get speed by shooting the projectile in front of your feet and you can do rocket jumps from ceilings too. You can be very creative with it.

the project sounds nice, a lot of ideas and it clearly would put a fast paced fps on the forefront again, that's the main idea. people play dota because it's free, it uses steam (workshop, friends list, winter and summer sales, meaning they probably had an account already, just to buy that game at a 75% discount), you have a nice matchmaking to grab a quick game with your friends against people around your skill level, spec (a lot of stats) and replay (every game is available, I think ?) features, an easy way to make maps... pretty much everything quakelive doesn't have

so you take all that, put it in an arena fps game with an updated engine compared to quake, it's promising. will it become a reality ? I don't know. won't the communities be autistic fucks thinking the other robots are designed for retards/casuals/hardcore nerds ? I don't know. will they even drop their current game for more than a few hours at release before creating a thread "welp, it's shit, that's me going back to my game #2gd2btrue #hue" or "msg me when someone has made a vq3 robot and dm6" ? I don't know, but at least the project is moving along, it has some fresh ideas and should have the right advertisement. worst case, it doesn't happen and your current game is still there.

Amazing ideas, really refreshing to add action rpg elements to fps.

Some ideas for team modes:

Maybe players start with 4 robot changes per game, with the ability to gain more through frags/pickups/defences etc. The idea being you have a core team(ie:tf2) with the ability to swap out certain playstyles when the game requires, except with a limit because tf2 turtle fest is fucking lame.

This allows there to be the standard lineup which can be balanced however all playstyles can come into play if needed, would reward people who can use strategy and teamwork over pure skill, and at the top level everyone would be both awesome and use the best strats.

Just please dont let there only be one robot per game, there will always be one robot thats underused because its much much harder to make work OR there will be WoW type rock paper scissors when it comes to lineups.

I think Reborn could be really unique by expanding on the pickups. More than just armor/health/weapons. The Robots could pick up robot mods and skills. You could have a mod in which increases your speed by 2% or so, or change your jump height. Like armor, you would have a max, but you gain a percentage on per pickup.

I like the skills, but I don't like the idea of not being able to use them a lot. Clearly they are fun (as shown by James himself using them nonstop). What I rather see is a pickup for the skill in which you have a time limit in which you can use it and players could fight for control over a certain skill.

I like that we have both reflex and reborn though. Reflex to expand upon the current formula, Reborn to try a bunch of brand new shit. Reflex will have lots of tried and true mechanics. Reborn will be more experimental.

If we only had reflex I would be craving something different, if we only had reborn I would be complaining that we dont need a new formula, just a development of the current one. This way I have both. I hope they both are good (reflex already is good)

Classess in a competitive arena based shooter is a fail from me, all players should have equality of the game and skill to be determined who is better.
But on the other hand, with this you can have a duel tourney more creativly for example 3 classes. First class only tourney, Second class only, Third class only, Mixed class tourney.

Let him make the game, we will decide.
For now, reflex is ahead of the game for my taste.

With the way he is implementing classes, this is still the case. If classes have to face the same classes in duel then the players are on a completely equal footing and the sills will be determined by who is better.

Also pro players would end up being known for their best classes.

Its exactly the same as players having good maps, except they will also have good maps and good classes. If the final of a tourney (rapha v evil for example) is heavy classes on (insert map name) then people could analyse that rapha is really good at playing the heavy class but evil is really good at the map and its an interesting combination.

Adds another layer to the matchup over simply who is best at the map.

I think that he presents some intriguing weapon and movement ideas. I like the reverse and double jumping energy skill ideas, the rocket launcher dip, the ricochet pulse (reminds me of the ut ripper but with less ricochet distance), the close range explosion and the implosion rocket. The cool thing is that if people don't like it they will be able to mod it and make it better.
