1st: infinite walljumps. Warsow tried it in the very first versions of the game. Was OP, devs nerfed it.

2nd: still the same UT dodge technic. Dash; stop; dash; stop; dash; stop. No fluid movements like strafe-jumping. Maybe the old hardcore UT fans will like it, but i doubt that the quake players will sacrifice strafe-jumping/bunny-hopping for this.

One thing to keep in mind warsow vs this is that there is no huge speed. What you see there, is pretty much the extent of how fast players will move unless the base runspeed/dodgespeed is modified.

I am not a fan of heaps of wall jumps like either game, but you can't simply go "it did not work in wsw.. so it wont here either".

It might, simply because that is about the only movement mechanic the game has. You can't go 900ups then fly off walls. In addition the ut devs are not huge fans of air control - which puts it under the thumb even more.

I agree on the movement. The game is really nice with cool and interesting weapons and such but the movement have always been inferior to Quake. Making so many dashes looks and feels bad, they should just increase the movement speed and let you jump by hitting jump or make something different.

I'd love to see a more fluid version of UT's movement. Definitely one of my gripes with 2k4. I like the dodging but how it was executed always felt weird.

Walljumping isn't a bad thing, it depends then how the maps will be etc, the problem is the fluidity as many people said, and that's also what I don't really like about UT, once you're on the floor you're kind of "stuck", the transition hurts.

Respawn even did a better job in Titanfall (YES OMG UR KIDDING RIIIITE??) in my opinion, because they added bunny hop, the good thing is that you keep your momentum once you're getting speed, also if you pair it with walljumping/running which boosts your speed it's pretty cool

While i can still understand the "lack of speed" for objective reasons for very speed oriented gamemodes (ctf /race and so on) i have a big problem in Quake live... the close combat moves, u feel like a paraplegic bunny only able to walk on the ground and bunny hoping with absolutely no aircontrol midair. You just feel like a sandbag thrown in the air with no possibility to do anything to correct your trajectory/avoid any midair projectile.

In close combat, u can perform everything u can do in quake (on the ground dodge +bunny hoping) if you wanna + quick dashes (dodges) + wall dodges and so on .
About that, being able to do exact same thing than in quake + complementary solutions to fight/avoid enemy shots i never see any quake superfanboyq3oricallda-bs say: "oh well, for sure ut feels clunky for high speed move for sure, but i reckon for close combat, there are more dynamic solutions, it's cool". Although it's basic truth.

So once again a lot of fanboyism and narrow minded action going on, period.

After trying all FPS games I've played I haven't refused listening and trying out interesting ideas other people can bring, and since you are French you probably know Nofrag, and if you do know them, you would see how much most users there are FPS hardcore players HOWEVER they wouldn't stay in one position and refuse to evolve to something different, this is my philosophy, I couldn't care less what people on ESR want, if I had to talk for one community it would be Nofrag, because I share what many people think there.

Your comparison doesn't hold up, since speed is only one factor in movement. Painkiller is faster than Quake, but that doesn't make its movement any better.

Rally is supposed to be fluent and skillful isn't it? I recon that's one of the reasons people would enjoy it.

That's just random, nothing more. The fact that's indeed a "stop and go" mechanic doesnt mean at all it's "not intuitive or fluid", it's just different of what you're used to/prefer.
Where i will easily reckon quake tend to be more fluid on a general matter, it has also it's counterpart in another aspect.

Lets talk about curves yes, where in quake u just can't change drastically direction without also drastically loses speed and be dragged in the direction of the movement with inertia. One could compare that with a car with shit brakes and bad direction handling and that it would induce predictable trajectory and easy shooting-spot prediction.

Not seeing you talking about all the other movements possibilities UT gives you while in a fight in addition of the quake ones, nor the fact that while being midair you're like a sandbag on rails without any possibilities of changing direction.

You're always hitting the bad things on other games (sometimes rightfully so, i would even go your way for some) though u seem to also not being able to see the good points this mechanic (here the UT movement style) can offer you and that is an interesting concept.

Your point is mute. If you are up in the air, open for easy rails, that means you made earlier mistakes that got you in that position. Oftentimes even pro players will miss those rails though, since you might have a fraction of a second to hit it

Any game that is not the EXACT same as Quake is not worth playing.

I just feel like sometimes developers are afraid or something to use Quake-like mechanics in their game, cos they're afraid they will be percieved as a ripoff or something, but sometimes you should use what works best, thats all

Have you played titanfall? The movement does feel smooth.

Have you played cods? The movement feels exactly like quake3 does, 100%.

Have you played painkiller? Movement doesn't get much smoother and with more freedom than that in a 'main' game (this so cpm doesn't count), which is more so than quake3.

'Quake mechanics' are used to this day in games, but changed in ways that improve them for accessibility. That you haven't bothered to try games since quake3 and that most nowadays don't follow it 100% doesn't mean they are 'bad', just like strafe jumping (moving head left and right while constantly jumping to gain speed) isn't inherently 'good'.

If anything a problem would be if games were all equal, or if most players stayed in the same forever and think everything that isn't what they do is worse or is 'killing' it.

edit: and btw UT-like movement is not 'bad' but different. The thing is you are not comprehending its appeal, which is that every single time you move you are doing trickjumping. You know like when jumping around in ztn nailing the wall clippings for the first time, that's how UT feels every match. Maps are built around those constant tricks as well. Some might not prefer that way, but doesn't mean it is bad. Also if there's something that the UT series does right are the weapons, all of which are awesome and combo within each other, so I don't know if you played any of those games you are so strongly opinionated about really.

Aww man I loved it too. The bad thing about it is the actual engine/game though. Damn buggy, glitchy and fucked up. Also initial ramp up to cruising speed is too slow I felt.
Put it into a stable CPMA-like engine, make the first jump like a decent circle jump speed wise, have cornercutting, ledgegrabbing, rampjumps, doublejumps, no instant stop when hurt, non-broken rocketjumps, etc.
Make cruising speed somwhere between 800-1000ups, being able to pass that by rocketjumping, but having it decay back.
Daym I'd LOVE that :3

Obviously it removes strafe jumping skills, but makes learning the movement much easier. And there's still a learning curve to be able to maintain top speed at all times, do all them tricks etc.

(and weapon design/balance in PK was also fucked up)

- Other methods of covering large distances will be discussed and tested at a later stage.

@pacman: yes surely theres gonna be vehicles. From my point of View, it's a wonderful thing tbh.
Let me explain why.

Firstly, it's not vehicle gametypes only, nobody put a knife on your throat to play those. You dont wanna play them, just dont.

Secondly, it's a wonderful bridge for newbies. New guys coming from whatever games, can learn the basics of UT gameplay and gather some fragpower at their own rhythm. They can still finish 10/50 k/d ratio and still be useful. It's valuing their role in the game even if they arent some frag monster and it greatly helps them keep motivated and stay in the game while they learn a bit more in depth the demanding gameplay/mechanics.
It's an ersatz of ctf. Non frag-oriented gameode.
Thirdly, while they are starting to get some fragpowers, if they decide so, they can move on to tdm/duel (and then most of the time, they realize afterwards vehicles gamemodes are dull somehow.

I used to play a lot of vehicles when i started, so i know what i'm talking about, the "better" i became, the more i started to hate vehicles, to finally play 50/50 vehicles/tdm then 33/33/33 vehicles/tdm/duel to fastly after totally abandon vehicles gamemode and hating at them even. Not to brag too much but several ppl could confirm youthat i reached a more than decent level in tdm/duel in UT and not "noob" ppl.

So, despite hating vehicles gametypes now, i mean sincerly i find this boring...i OBJECTIVELY hope at least sth like ut3 warfare or ut2k4 onslaught will be present at day one for the new UT to allow newbies to jump in easily and possibly move on to the "real thing" afterward.

One thing i really notice now, it's how some of you guys focus on the "not so bright points of ut" and rightfully so sometimes, i'm not questioning that, and totally pass through all the good things or how this or this thing can actually be a good thing if you think more than 5 secs about it =( .... It's sometimes quite "facepalming material" =( .

For me vehicles are ok, more = better. BUT.
even that im not very interested in it.

If you have money and you want to make really AAA game.

But if you want a game done by community, you need to focus on core gameplay and nothing more.

Also it splits community.

From my past experience the maps on UT were actually big, but even larger maps would be sick D:

Tbh in UT you got every type of maps, u got Penetrated (that plays very very much like aerowalk) to huuuuuge ass warfare maps with vehicles (like Dusk or Serenity) .

The only way "too big ass" on foot maps were in ut2k4 like goliath for example....

Imo in ut3 the maps are decently sized, but a tendency to be too...small.... :x .

I hope that somebody will make 'new quake' on Unreal Engine 4 ;)

OK, im ok with UT beeing UT . But atleast get that running speed up. They can jump far and on walls, but they cant run ? If the running speed was much faster i would think this could be an excellent option to movement, but as it is now, horrible .

You know what, i think i will keep on trying to help and bring some quake amazing features to the new UT on this forum as much as i can (i hope to not be considered an annoyance by admins because i underline quake mechanics sometimes too much in my examples :D , but always with tact i think! ) .
Then, when the game gonna be released and we will see how it will turn out, i will try my best to raise "fund" with the help of known players i know kinda well and we will do our "own kind of CPM/utcomp" with as much Competitive features as we think are necessary and as much as we can implement. I already have several good friends that are very good coders, to my hopes are decent for that.


I think Epic are not too much into delusion about nowadays sad state of "new gamers". I think this UT will be very popular for newbies, and it's somehow a good thing, i just hope the gameplay will be subtle enough to reward everyone ala Street Fighter:

New guys can come at day one and mash buttons and have fun together but all the highskill guys will still rape them nonetheless.
It's, i hope, the direction in term of skill this UT will go. A kind of accessible, yet skill rewarding Street Fighter Learning curve.

me neither, i dont really know, i try to voice my opinion on it as much as i can (to include it) with a constructive model (see few messages below for the related post) and several ppl are all up for that but i dunno on what extent Epicgames is "inspiring" from the community nor their real plan about it =( .

The 2 things that will get me to play the new UT game for more than a month would be

1. better movement

2. proper matchmaking and ranking features

Either one would be great, both would be excellent. But since I dont see them shaking up UT movement very much I really hope they at least implement good matchmaking.

Well from an UTer point of view, the movement (from what i'm aware of at least) is going in the right direction tbh =) .
The ranking features it was "nicely introduced" in ut3 with sthg similar to quakelive:

-How much you killed ppl with this or that weapon (both prime/secondary) and their ratio
-how much killing sprees/rampage/dominating/...
-how much dble kill etc
-Extended vehicles stats
-Some particular achievements (they dont unlock anything it's just for the sake of saying "i did it")
-A lot of achievements are only viewable ingame
-An ersatz of Elo system....

An ersatz...., why? because it would have been relevant to have one single elo count for each gametype but those noobs merged it for every main gametypes -.-' .
So ye, a warfare newbie that would kill you with his tank would drastically get elo and you, ofc vice versa, even though in a 15min duel you would rape him 50-0 with 25hs ...

Match making i really agree with you, i hope they gonna push it that way (a decent MM system).

I'm a bit worried atm they may listen too much to newbies as they are louder and there are more to speak than experienced players, but oh well, best solution i can envisage is my #149 comment. :p
