We're all invited to enter the duel tournament and I'm pretty sure we all will because it's the perfect way to get used to both the computers, surroundings and warmup our game.

When it comes to quake people usually forget that some duel matches aren't exciting because the better player wins, instead they are interesting because some people have a very distinctive playstyle that is just exciting to watch, regardless of the outcome.

show me some EURO ctf pre-quakecon tournaments and I will reconsider, as I am from the NA, I never watch these nigs play some ctf. But i've played with id/bigwig/honks/looloo/2/viju/musha etc for the longest time and I know how good NA ctf players can be.

There was a CTF tournament few years ago ran by mrgreen and it had some EU CTF team high pings and all rolling some of the NA teams. I can't find the video anywhere online but remember Juven1le railing lights out and some very creative offence from the team as well. I think if some real EU CTF went to QCON they would be more then be ready for any of the NA CTF teams.

Being the good quaker he is, and not having time to help with the organization of donations, he decided to put some of his hard earned bucks and help who he fucking wants to.

The explanation would take some text and I don't want to diverge too much to it. Basically this is me making a gift to a friend who likes a game I also like, who's been dreaming to go to quakecon for years (and got screwed up twice), and who had almost a whole year he could dedicate to training and getting in shape. It's not an investment, it's not sponsoring, and there are no strings attached, except demon trying his best. All discussions about sending other stronger players are beyond the point here. I know there are others with better chances on paper, but I am not an esport manager nor a talent scout. I'm a quake fan, and I fully resonate with the dream to going to quakecon at least once in your life, and to the importance of having a goal which drives your daily training. Whether or not a plane ticket eight months in advance can do the magic, I don't really know, but it's a story I really wanted to see.

ye ye, knowledge is one good google search/a message to an admin away. when i wanted to post my first news post i got help in 3 seconds and got it majored ez. but it's not only about that. exp presented some crucial effort regarding raising their own funds (hence modest goal for 3 people 500eur) and giving something back to the donators. all this packaged in an easily majorable news item (which btw they had no clue how to post either - i know that for a fact cause i formatted it personally). and there you go. to be fair I'm not shitting on posters or anyone really just trying to emphasise the difference and show much how bigger the chances are with an approach like that. also the guy who i replied to was calling favouritism which was lalalalala

Before posting I checked donation calls for Evil and for Dream Hack in 2013 - they were all written in free words. Actually Memento wrote just a single sentence in his "News" post.

I assume that you know dem0n and spart1e from some combination of duel, CTF and TDM (e.g. spart1e won the TDM tournament at QCon in 2011 and, in CTF, got 3rd place in 2009 and 2nd place in 2010).

Not really. I have a good job yes, but I keep a very low profile (I don't smoke, don't go to pubs regularly, etc) and save most of the money I make for the grim dark future that lies ahead, and a few quake related squanders here and there.

Strenx have been inactive for long time now, he have managed a 2nd place ONCE as best when he was active, he wont get top3 even. av3k is inactive he will get beaten into retirement again vs rapha, evil or cypher. If i remember correctly, the euro CTF team "fnatic" which participated at QCon in 2009 and 2010 only lost to EG and won against any other NA team. Team Expendables, which unlike fnatic completely consists of actual CTF players, is not likely to do any worse.

There are no sponsors in Quake sure, but most of the people seeking "donations" from the community have been playing Quake for 10+ years. The same players are also in their late 20's and should be able to afford this sort of trip without the help from the community. Quakecon happens every year and if its something you think you MAY want to attend you should put a little money aside each month and plan for it (the same you would for any purchase you want to make).

I realize there are exceptions to this, there are people wanting to go that are quite younger/don't have good paying jobs yet, and also people that do not have any. I just have been seeing a lot of these "donation" things lately and I'm starting to wonder if people are being taken advantage of.

I kind of agree with this - but if people can afford to donate and want to see someone go who wouldn't otherwise be able to, then good for them and good for everyone else because it will be a better tourney. Trouble is because there are so many donation appeals ongoing it could turn out that none get enough individually...

let's make quakecon in europe and see if you guys come w/o sponsors or donations :D

Not sure any of us would be going to a tournament where winning means you break-even financially, at best.

Which is already the case even with QuakeCon 2014's prizepool to be fair.

A player would need to invest around 2000€ for such a trip, and the best a player can get in return (meaning winning the 8000$ for first place + the 2000$ for the showmatch) is 2500$ from a 10,000$ overall prize.

2500$ = 1800€.

Tough it's true you have to take into account the whole prestige and unique experience of playing a QuakeCon for any Quake player. But even then, unless you're really comfortable in your life, you'll always be reluctant to invest so much time and money eventough the reward can be so great. Afterall, it's not like anyone can take the title for granted either ;).

And that leads me to my next point. Quakecon isn't and should not be about the money at this point in the games life. Quakecon is a unique experience to connect with people you only talk with online for a few days and to just relax. It's a vacation with some competition. It's a way to drink with your friends and hit the pool and also have some bragging rights when its all over. Unless you're a contender to win the duel tournament- if you are going to Quakecon with any other mentality you probably are going to be disappointed come its completion.

Quake3/QL and Quakecon (on top of hundreds of other events throughout the years) have been around for a very long time. The majority of people playing in these tournaments have already won tournaments and titles before, and have nothing left to prove to anyone. If you're going to prove something that's awesome, but as sad as it is the time for that has passed.

I guess my point is that at this point in Quake's life, Qcon isn't about the money. It's about the experience.

Seems like Mr. cl0ck is hiding his true intentions. He doesn't want euros coming over and winning the money that he thinks his team will. This is the most likely scenario should expendables AND link1n's team participate. He's been practicing pretty hard for this, contrary to what he claims. Dahang's team seems to be better though as far as NA teams go, and actually have a shot at first :(. Sorry bud maybe next year. Next, lol!

Dno, there's still dreamhack and a few other events in Europe that meet those goals in terms of having a blast in terms of meeting other people you've never met irl and enjoying the LAN environment. If I'm going to quakecon it's a once in a lifetime experience and I want to make it count. Ok, I might meet a few US people there but it's not like I share a lot of things with the NA community and dreamhack is, afterall, the biggest LAN in the world.

And why is it too late or anything ? It's still quakecon, it's still quakelive and it's still awesome. But it's also still very expensive.

I am yet to see a full US team make it to dreamhack with their own money, or any other event you can think of. When this happens, please highlight me again and we can discuss this on even grounds.

UFX went to Dreamhack in 2011. While half of us were sponsored, I PROMISE you that we were prepared to go either way. We by no means counted on being paid for to go, it was just a luxury that we gladly accepted.

Also, Cloud 9 went to QLAN 2 in 2004 in Sweden on our own money (completely un-sponsored and 100% paid for out of our own pockets)

Not to mention 2004 was both a much better era for Quake than it is for the past few years now and was also prior to the world economic crisis (in a pool of a few other reasons which I'm too tired to develop :D)

I'm ready to believe you by your word on the ONE counter-example that is ufx at dreamhack in 2011 but it still seems "weak" to say the least.

Look, I don't want to get into an argument about that. I just think you were overreacting here. We did not exactly ask for 5k€. We asked for 500€ to ease out our trip a little. That amount can make us spare the hotel costs but it certainly wasn't going to be sending us overseas. We asked for a little help, with a little gift from us in return. Trust me if we didn't ask for money we would certainly not go through the hassle of trying to make a documented, mounted movie afterwards. We're not just begging for money nor are we saying "gief or we wont go".

I think you should just be glad that this community has this kind of people that are ready to share a little of their money to see some more entertainment. As well as you probably were glad, with ufx, that you managed to get only two of your players to pay for the trip to DH2011.

I agree with you in that I think its great that this community has exhibited the generosity of donating to see players they like to watch attend, and I am really glad I have been able to be apart of it for the past 15 years. I just wanted to address what I feel has been an abundance of "donation"-related articles/posts and votes that have been popping up on ESR over the past few months. I see top players who have a LEGIT chance of placing in the money (with a little practice and maybe a tiny bit of luck) asking for donations to attend events. Players who have won more than enough money in the past 8 years to justify the cost of flying to Texas. I merely question at what point these players draw the line in the sand between necessity and perhaps massaging the naive, generous nature of lower level/amateur players in the community that have always looked up to the pros (more or less) who are requesting the donations.

Then I agree with you, that thought process of yours right there is actually the same I've had recently watching the donations pop up everywhere, only we tried to make it different and more engaging I think ;).

And I'm looking forward to that beer, damn.

And I can assure you, that this lineup would not have been possible without those donations. So it's not a case of it beeing worth it.

Helping to raise the possibilities of a player you enjoy going to an event and cheering/speccing/spraying/crying for him is awesome. Nobody is forcing people to donate. It doesnt matter if the player could go by himself.

Instead of donating (free) just propose some lessons (15€/hour).

Actually, if some people are really interested in it, I would definetly do it but this time in order to ease out memento_mori's hotel costs (it's around 170$ for 4 nights as it is now).

To be honest I thought you'd have won something by now, all the skills are there, just wtf...

Thanks :). I think I've tried to apply the basics and it only came into place just recently, after cooller's famous ABC quote. I can play a perfect in control game and know my weaknesses out of control. Those weaknesses which, thanks to evil, I've been able to work on a little recently.

I also think breaking the ice between high level underdog and a top player is a question of nerves and confidence. At 26 years old, not having a background of any big result is tough for your confidence and nerves. I think the nerves part has gone ever lower with experience and it stands now at a very decent level of calmness. The confidence comes from results. I've had a few good results recently aswell as last year and it has helped its bit. Confidence and consistency comes from practicing and knowing precisely what are your strengths and weaknesses.

I'll put up the effort as much as I can. Thanks again for what I think I can safely take as a compliment ;).

As koz said it's a modest goal especially when it's between the 4 of them and hopefully they will get a bit more to make it easier.
Not just some random person writing that some dueller wants $2000 to goto Qcon with no effort or incentive from the actual player.

To be precise. Memento_mori came to me during the Prague Lan back in september 2013 with a little idea: after a good enjoyable afterparty with the other players/casters/admins memento_mori told me he was looking to help a player get to QuakeCon 2014. He said he was thinking of giving his chance to an "underdog" and that he had been thinking about it for a while.

In other words, this is something he wanted to do long before any of the donating trend appeared, much like fatality did for k1llsen a few years back.


I can not express in words how much thankful I am for him to do this and I still could not believe it when, back in Januari/Februari this year, he mailed me again so we could arrange the flights and hotel room. My flight tickets have been booked for a few months already.

I am not asking for money in this thread, this is for the team to be able to attend with a positive lineup of true CTF players that have a shot at showing some good EU CTF entertainment in the tournament. We didn't want to just ask for money and promise nothing but just roughly playing the tournament: we want to give back a little with this little road movie. All of us will be taping ourselves as much as we can and try to come up with some fun footage that we can put together in the weeks after the event. I have contributed myself some money for the team's funds so that we can all book it all safe and sound as soon as possible and start practising the hell out of new ctf maps aswell as, for the duellers in our team, practise our duel :-).

My overall plan is to play as much as I can during the day and have the evenings to practise CTF with our team. Lately I've been playing more with more focus on my game, with visible results, so I intend to do the same and progressively enhance my practising time.

Personally I don't give a rats' ass about some movie. What I want is for you all to practice hard and kick American butts coz they think they can play.

No worries, we're going ham on the practice. We're going there to win, not lose so I can assure you the hours will be put in.

Agent imo isnt worthy of being sponsored by the community, he could aswell just refuse to play and then all money would be wasted. And for the lan bit, cypher is also considerably stronger on lan, as is rapha so i doubt ash would beat them.

All of them (russkies) are great players and i would love to see them at qcon but i cant see why they would be better choices then demon. Spartie is unpredictable, he can aswell get to the final or lose early..

Its not the drug per say, its the mindset thats the problem. If you're having mental blocks and performance issues you shouldnt be looking at what pills to take to "fix it". Rather look at your whole person, your diet, lifestyle, habits, drugs and alcohol, lack of sunshine, sleep environment, living environment etc. Maybe some of these factors are preventing you from reaching optimal performance

being raised and living in a world where everything is about "right" and "wrong" decisions just leads to a certain kind of anxiety when it comes to makeing decisions, when you have to prove yourself.
i think you can't get this kind of disorder (i really like to call it that way) under control just by looking at yourself, dieting, filling up your vitamin D and so on.
so why not take some legal and very much harmless "drug" (as you call it) just to tell your society-caused anxiety to fuck off?

as someone that has gone through this process myself I can say that you can't blame society for your anxiety problems. you have to look at what's causing and all of those factors mentioned play in. When I was younger I had your mindset, that taking pills was cool and a good way to deal with your anxiety and performance issues, well short story, I learnt the hard way that you have to work on yourself, it can be a very painfull process, but that's what life is about, there are no shortcuts and no pills will fix you

and trust me, it aint no easy route further down the line, drug addiction is an ugly thing
