Is that not something that was invented back in the ball mouse days? So if yes, why do we still see this function in modern games? Is there even one example of application where it is actually useful?
i guess it would be, at low dpi - too high sensitivity, when you start having visible skips when trying to move slow, otherwise it's just a feeling with no REAL use, imo. So many different implementations though in different games. Might be an artifact like some games still have keybinds for look left and right and other obsolete bindings from a bygone era.
Some players like the feel of m_filter 1. I think cooller and cypher used it for a long time. There was a kind of 'folk wisdom' going around that said that it helps you to maintain smoothness even when you use a high accel. This is kind of silly imo but w/e.
When it was invented isn't terribly relevant, but yeah it was from quake 1, implemented by Carmack to help with the problem of 40 Hz mice making for choppy looking play in-game.
