...but I get what you mean. So long as its not something like longest yard where its TOO open.
I've always thought dismemberment would fun with a PG replacing the LG. That would create a fairly open map for rail without too many hallways. Perhaps a bit too open though. RA area would be kind of a nightmare to get out of without a rail. Then again if you add a couple pillars to the center of both major areas of the map maybe it would work.
(and for the record why does everyone hate dismemberment? It creates a lot of interesting item timing situations)
This is not me highlighting myself as an outstanding asset but me pointing out that I would really like to start a project like this if I had the time which is related to the OP. Thank you.
hes got a map in the mappool. even two sometimes. who are you to doubt him?
on a side note id like to notice he should enlarge silence a bit, so rail wont be fucking useless. this way he will have 2 maps in mappools, which is still infinite times more than you.
well that doenst make any sense at all. until recently i wasnt even a paying customer in quake, and my biggest contribution to the quake community are a few text files. you on the other hand have made maps that have been features in various tournaments. if u say u dont consider urself a more important figure for the quake community, i gotta imagine what ur saying is false.
From what I observe you are the one here judging people on the internet thinking you have the right to tell them who they are and what they are thinking. I could totally join in on that and say generalization of minds is delusional and a result of a great sense of self-importance but of course I wouldn't do that.
the thing is, I don't know cityy. someone said to me he was arrogant - maybe he is, I don't know, I don't care. but, at least he contributes to QL, with hard work and effort. if you can't appreciate that, fine, get the fuck out, but trying to rip into him like that is stupid.
you two shit trolls are too afraid to even have you real ingame names here. palatka aka daitroo the swe kid with 10k CA games.
and nocturn aka celeritas, the rager and flamer. every time I see you ingame, you're being a smartass and jumping at every small opportunity to flame and argue, calling ppl the N word amongst other nasty things - ridiculous. you were already banned at least once for language.
and on the forums? constructing these lengthy, condescending, eloquent pseudo-intellectual posts, thinking you're some kind of god's gift to earth. look at your posts, read some back aloud, it is pathetic.
here's an advice: try leaving your room, meeting real people, instead of exercising your superiority complex on the internet.
gosh dangit, i asked for my quakelive nickname to be changed so pervy stalkers like u would stop talking to me. too bad i was denined due to some new regulation, something about profile stats being fucked up :c seems like everyday that i play someone i dont know feels the need to start addressing me by my esr name :c super annoying
I know I have done a lot of stuff in quake but how does that make me better than anyone else... I make maps because I enjoy doing it, not because I want to be some celebrity sort of shit.
If your imagination is different that's a result of your thought process.
The reason why I wanted my full name on the loading screen is gather attention of potential employers in the game industrie. If it wasn't one of my aims to work in that industry, I wouldn't care a lot.
watch out, the guy whos carrying a list of names who he will not talk to come to defend the guy whos being accused of having a too strong sense of self-importance
I'd stop playing to the troll if I were you.
Some are just jealous that you can create maps of the quality that they actually have wanted to include in the game.
You did that, that IS something to be proud of, and it does make you more skilled than most here, certainly at mapping/texturing.
I know that reality can be painful sometimes, but still, awesome contribution you have there for the community. I presume it won't be more than this ever.
That doesn't change the fact that you, by all means, have the right to be a know-it-all, full-of-jelly bad troll with zero accomplishments.
God, if you try your best, you're still an awful troll. Not funny, not witty, not anything, maybe just desperate if you consider that as a feat. You should try to change roles for a breather.
Yes, I am continously trying to improve on that. I always want to reach a certain artistic level to also appeal to casual audiences and that does sometimes not work very well together with fps.
The technical aspect of making maps is often overlooked and it takes time to get really good at it. I think I am still not on a top level regarding optimization but I've certainly learned a lot from cure for instance or fluorescent which were both made in 2011 (silence too btw).
Unfortunately I have not really managed to release anything post 2012 which was when I made McSarge's which was a bit of an artistic excursion and a rushed project I picked up for the mapping competition back then.
A map's performance depends - apart from a lot of small interventions you can make - a lot on the map's layout and geometry. If you look at the stock QL maps and compare them to a lot of the maps that are made today you'll see the old maps rely a lot more on clearly sealed off rooms and areas connected by hallways that interrupt lines of sight. So there is always a give and take between creating open and highly connected levels with good visuals and building to get good performance. Optimally, you would want to hit the sweet spot and that's something which can only be learned through experience. I'm trying to work things out more day by day and I hope at some point I'll be good enough to get the best of all sides.
tl;dr: Ditch those casuals. They have lolCoD to play with gamepad. We, true quakers, need stable fps.
About old <--> new maps comparison; yeah, I noticed that and tbh old maps are still way better. Mr. Willits and his brood knew something. Maybe you should chase a somewhat similar approach when you load up Radiant.
I'm all in for positive critics. As I mentioned I like Silence (tho it's not the best with green enemymodel - this is also another issue which you should consider when you make maps; many-many players use the different versions of green when they set up enemycolors and while it''s really pleasing to the eyes to use a green theme, it doesn't mean that it's good for actual visibility in many cases), Cure (which has a somewhat CS-flavour in it) for example.
Another thing; while it's certainly adds up as a good variety when a new map comes out with a somewhat different texture-approach, Quake maps are still best in the gothic / techno themes.
On a sidenote; I forgot the map's actual name, but I'd like to see the boss-map of the 1st Quake 1 episode (you know, the huge lava-demon-something and 2 long corridors with a big lava pool in the middle) in QL, a bit modernized (maybe some teles, 1-2 jump pads - but definitely gothic tileset); and without rail to ditch the possibility of playing instagib in duel. It's an old dream of mine. Also old dm3 in Q1 / QW.
No, don't ditch the artistic design! People should ditch their C64's and get halfway decent PC's - never had any problems with FPS drops and I sure haven't got a Supercomputer. Also maps should look good since on stream full details are enabled and enjoyed.
Green enemy-model, green map-theme is a problem? How silly is that! Just change it to whatever contrasts best with the maps main colour.
Altogether great work!
Only request: next maps secret should contain a potat.
the one that should be working on the fps issues is called Sponge I believe, but that's not gonna happen for several reasons.
but yes... very unfortunate with the fps drops
It would be SyncError since it's a map thing. Or they could improve performances globally by working on the engine but then it probably still wouldn't be sponge but a contractor that would actually know what he'd be doing.
Keep em coming! You have my support for this and previous maps. If you need someone to test things out and give you ideas. You can find me on IRC with same nick :)
I'm not here to defend Q2. Just happened to browse by this thread/post and wanted to say something about it. :)
But that is part the glamor from this version of Quake for me. You have to predict your aim and you can always predict based on your ping. It works very good up to ~100ms ping and it's just a matter of getting used to your own ping. I personally trust (or mostly enjoy perhaps?) my own ability to 'time' a delay, rather than having a code doing it for me, but most of all it's harder to hit higher accuracies which makes good aim quite rare.
Even Q3 in OSP days (or still if you want to try it vs BOTS:) had something like 50ms delay built in most weapons which is still much more direct than for instance Q2 and it makes the average aim % slightly lower and you could notice a difference. Hitting +40% in Q2 was considered insane and that is considered quite average in QL today.. Different game and we all prefer our own it seems. :)
No, im not saying that.
Im saying LG is big part of QL. So its silly to claim some weird mode, where we modify the game significantly, would "test true skills" or what ever.
LG on dm13 is nowhere as important as Rail is on t4, that might be a clue. Even if t4 had an LG, rail would still dominate, I think, just because of the distances.
Yea, dm13 has much a more balanced geometry scheme than t4. Especially since through floors damage is gone rockets are even more useless with the geometry now.
rail is the "easiest" weapon imho, the way you play without long range weapon makes positioning more like QW and less like CS. Phrantic and dm13 are good examples, even if the maps don't play well for some people.
Maybe instead of trying to derail this thread with bullshit cityy and friends arguments you'd actually try and discuss the topic?
Phrantic is good in Q4, and in CPMA. It just doesn't play well in QL, I feel its smaller than it is.
The map should be complex, a big bigger (think dm13). Open areas without LG and punishable rail is a must, the players should have to plan fights, instead of just fighting wherever shit occurs.
The map should be about not who hits more rails, but the basics of quake, ABC n shit.
