My FFA elo is 2748 with 2,5k games @ 70 % win-ratio - I'm not boasting about it, because let's face it, in reality it doesn't mean anything awesome, since it's FFA, not duel / TDM / CTF. I'm not really a great player by any means (let's say around mid-skill overall); there any many-many people out there who are WAY better than me. Also the game mode is considered as a rather casual one - but maybe the number, if nothing else, slightly hints that I might not be as bad as you think (in FFA at least, which we are talking about).

Dunno I wasnt too impressed by Starcraft players in interviews. Fumbling all over themselves in most cases. Guys like Stephano and Naniwa would be examples of awkward personalities. It could be because they are playing a very dull game, which is like learning the most optimal algorithm for a math problem, that has none of the creative expression that Quake does

With Koreans it's 3 part I think. 1st, the general dude that spends all his time playing Starcraft tends not to be the most flamboyant of personalities so to speak. 2nd, its a cultural thing we're they are generally more reserved and soft-spoken. 3d, most of them speak no English, so all we get is the translators bit, and some body language and facial expressions (or rather lack thereoff in this case), to get a feel for their personality

Also the fact that most of the Starcraft pros are damn teenagers, average age is extremly lower than Quake pros (or rather ex-pros because of lack of tournaments), and in that age most guys are awkward as sh*t, I know I was, and it gets worse ofc in a live broadcast with everyone watching.

All these factors combined doesnt make for great personalities, in fact, it would actually be WEIRD if it did. One of the very few Starcraft pros with a marketable personality is Grubby, who gets fans on a pleasant personality alone. But he hails from a different era were esports were more off the "Wild West" in a sense

While I wouldn't say they don't require real skills, I agree with him that MOBAs require a more limited, capped set of skills. Your whole argument is like saying you can't comment on what kind of skills chess has and whether they're hard if you're not GM yourself.

Quake on the other hand will never have that problem since its based upon movement and aim. If Quake was like Starcraft there would be endless complaints about imbalanced races, units, buildings, strategies etc, 15 years after release still, which is what you will observe on EVERY Starcraft stream since Justintv/Twitch started. "Protoss imba", "nerf widow mines", "storms op", "David Kim is an idiot" etc etc

First of all there are dozens of different strategies which all depend on match-up, map, player preferences and the current meta game in SC2. These strategies are continuously adapted to the game, just like a chess player would make his moves or as a quake player would adapt his strategy to the current situation.

Secondly, you claim that quake is based on movement and aim. These elements are very similar to SC's micro - i.e. they are in fact execution and nothing else. Good execution (aim, movement, micro) will help you win fights but will only get you so far if your strategies are bad or if you are slow to adapt them to the game.

I don't see a whole lot of unexpected things happening in pro QL matches, do you?

tbh I dont think there's a mathematical way to prove that Starcraft is boring, if there is, it goes way beyond my mathematical skills. I do however dont think many people would argue that Quake and SC are remarkably similar games

As you may well know, regardless of my opinion of SC, it will continue to be a vastly more popular game, not based on merits of game mechanics, but because Blizzard were always good at marketing and selling games, and id software were not for the last 15 years

SC2 is successful because the pro players are connected to the community. They stream often, talk to fans in chat, show off their builds and talent. As far as I know Quake has never been this way. If it were I think it could be more popular with casuals. Personally I think that there are many exciting moments in SC2. Like when Jinro was advancing higher than any other foreigners have before in Code S GSL. It was a huge deal for the non-korean scene. It's always entertaining to see stephano, naniwa and huk play because they are essentially the only non-korean players good enough to compete. The metagame is constantly evolving and you never know what sort of new builds will surface or which old ones will reappear. If you like gaming and competition I don't see why you wouldn't like Starcraft.

That is because of the Heart of the Swarm expansion. Zerg unit named Swarm Host makes for extremely ridiculous games. Stephano does not like the expansion and I don't care for it either. I ended Wings of Liberty in the Masters. In Heart of the Swarm I'm stuck in Gold because of these stupid new units. In particular the Widow Mine is cheap and super deadly. It forces a Protoss player to always have an Observer or Oracle with army to show the burrowed mines. Same with Swarm Host. Without detection you cannot fight the never ending Locusts and they don't even cost the Zerg player any minerals and gas. I hope Legacy of the Void is better. This Swarm Host vs. Swarm Host match goes on for two hours. Ridiculous.

Which situation will favor me according to my weapons and skills?
Long range or close quarters?
Open ground or narrow corridors?

I had the exact same feeling while watching him play. He seemed to think that he still got the same skill-level he had when he left Quake but he was promptly proven wrong in a freakin FFA game. I cannot imagine what would have happened if he played Duel against a semi-decent opponent.

It totally is. I love playing FFA because I'm decent at it (to be fair, not being retarded is about the only requirement to be a decent FFA player) but the level of randomness is high as fuck.

To me, that means I've got no reason to rage at it because it's just random FFA bullshit - you get lucky sometimes, other times you don't. I don't really care that much if someone else wants to get mad about it though, it's just kind of funny to watch.

I know the situation was not really what I am about to say in the case of fatal1ty but if you take a FFA match and put 8 players with a similar skill level, you will enjoy a lots of kill steals, death a second before you finish your kill, map control issues due to random assaults and spawns. You can still observe the same thing with a wider skill range but just because you might be used to play FFA against lower players doesn't change that FFA in its optimal settings is supposed to be very 'random'.

While in Duel, the only thing you have to worry about is your opponent and your own mistakes. In team games, spawns are usually located around the team and you know in advance where to expect enemies just like duel.

Also like others mentioned already, the chat messages and the extra focus you get for having a "fatal1ty" label probably didn't help either.

I don't find it frustrating either but I can see how people would. It can be super random. Not so much that playing smart won't help you place high, but still more random than any other gametype imo. Sometimes you just get shit spawns right on top of stacked players and there's just nothing you can do about it. Sometimes you waste 10 seconds in an LG battle with first place only to have the guy at the bottom of the scoreboard swoop in and kill you both with 10 hp apiece. Sometimes you just charge through the map with a shotgun blowing away low health players with impunity while they fight amongst themselves and you end up winning in 5 minutes. It's just weird sometimes.

Duel in general is really frustrating to me because it's not random at all and so it's easier to blame myself when things go badly.

for me it's the fact that in duel you can be utterly helpless if you lose control, and its especially frustrating if 1hp decided whether or not you got control. Where as in ffa its much more forgiving, you can just respawn and get right back into it.

Yeah I've half given up on ever being a passable dueler. I just don't have the nerves for it. I get anxious and frustrated too easily when I'm losing and it ruins my aim (which already sucks to begin with).

You'd think for all his "accomplishments", and not to mention age, he'd be above raging like a young teenager. Especially when he currently isn't and hasn't been for years playing the game competitively.

He's retired. Why does he have to maintain a super attitude and super skill? Can't he just play for kicks and rage it up? He wasn't talking trash in the chat at least.

If he wanted to actually make a comeback as a top player he'd do what he did before, hunker down, play ~12 hours/day, tweak the config a bit (as opposed to default with sens/accel changed only), and take on a different attitude.

Even so, top players rage too. They're competitive. They want to win. It's frustrating not to pwn. Do you expect total equanimity?

No one is talking about his apparent level of skill. The point is, whether people like him or not, he's been to many lans and won a bunch of money over his career. Even got endorsement deals from it. He's 30 something years old. It's kinda silly, maybe even sad, to see someone with those credentials raging like a kid over some random frags during some random matches.

And since when has raging become acceptable or even the norm? I don't know, I played a few different sports from the time I was really young to a couple years after high school. And I've never come across a sport where throwing a temper tantrum was acceptable behavior.

If you had read the chat comments sometimes, his viewers were also the reason why he thinks they focus him, people keep saying in chat that everyone focus on him when he plays pub QL because he is fatality, I tried once to say that "it's FFA, so everyone is your enemy..." but then they said "no many times they agree to not kill each other so they prevent fatality to kill anyone, LOOK YOU SEE? Or they go on voice communication to be organized", so this was the last time I clicked on his stream. Because he won many tournaments in many games many people (not only fanboys) believe that he can always be on top in any games, which is insane in my opinion, and if they don't see him on top of scoreboard in any games he plays it's weird and it's kind of hard to believe for them so obviously you can see the reactions they will have regarding to his performance. But I've seen some people who are not delusional and support him, they understand that there is a time you are on top, and then it's over.

Honestly I cringe sometimes when he rages and when I read/watch their reactions (fat and his fans), so I agree and understand how lame this all is, but coming from some people on ESR, it's also laughable when you laugh at him, because when one's favourite duel player loses the amount of excuses you can read on stream and on the forum is pathetic as well, from the players sometimes but more from the supporters.

No hatred at all. I did infact became addict to the quake scene only after having seen "fatality vs aim" on youtube. I know, i know, don't laugh too much.
I don't know why, but that short video was really mind blowing for me at the time. Prior to that i never played online and only against bots, with basic config and without even changing the sens. No accel of course.

That video simply showed me there was a totally different way to play, the long jumps, the weapon switches, the abuse of the lg (that i barely used since with bad cfg was weak compared to rockets and rails), the sistematic item harvesting.
And, i discovered that there were peoples whose main activity in life was pushing the game limits against equally skilled fighters.

I had tremendous respect for Fat, i used my 56 k to download interviews and youtube matches in 240p, watching every single one of them at least a dozen of times.

The thing that most impressed me was his dedication and his mindset. Fatality practiced like nobody else, 8 hours a day with inflexible schedules, he took the whole question even more seriously that many professional athletes. He had absolute self confidence, and a positive and light view of the things.
Blonde, blue eyes, athletic, he was the prototype of the hero.

Medias threated him with gloves, he was *THE* pro player, the guy that started a huge business, always looking forward for the next challenge and without ever doubting he could not have won.

Now his celebrity is diminished, but back then, everybody and their mothers knew Fatal1ty. He had an aura around him. Peoples that didn't even play games, peoples that played other games, unreal tournament, starcraft, warcraft, half life and counter strike, nintendo etc, they knew him at least vaguely.

He could be the single thing that gathered more players to the quake community, ever. He probably is.More than anything else, more than the game itself.
So, we should all be grateful to Fat for that alone.

With more time, and a better connection, i started to understand that his career and his aura were in part fabricated; it was harsh to discover that the reason he prograssively disappeared from the quake scene and migrated to other games was that he simply couldn't top the new raising pro players. Cooller was too much for Fat. Many others, too. And if you watch now his matches, you can easily see why. And wonder how the hell could someone playing like that be at the top of the game, for few years. Terrible aim, slow play, campy, weak timing and questionable positioning, and so on. Makaveli was beyond noob, some of his matches are simply atrocious and probably not even tier 3 of today.

but all this doesn't matter. Fat was a positive role model, a genuine champ with a terrific mindset. Times changes, but some things stay.

This is part of the reason watching those streams is so painful. Those peoples playing ffa, they aren't even skilled. They can't even hit mg, they give him the shoulders half of the time, they don't even turn around when shooted in the back!
And they can't time a motherfucking quad.
It's ridicolous, it's like tier 3 with half of the players coming from tier 2.
Half of the peoples in this forum are well above that shit. This is tierslumming, i don't understand how Fat is even allowed in those servers.

It's always disappointing when somebody you admire acts in a bad way.
For example I like the way Cypher plays, but when he starts acting childishly I cringe.
Which is just one example.

As for Fatality; I'll stick to the one thing that's 100% objective and that's his behavior in that video.

I also think his behavior was over the top. He acted like a spoiled brat from bad parents who's developed a foul mouth. He needs a stern parent to tell him to behave himself. This may sound condescending but that's the best I can put it.

That being said I think the general hatred about him here on ESR is over the top as well. He's just developed a bad mouth, that is all. I don't think he really means everything he says, a lot of it is posturing for his fans as well I think, which is not applaudable either but still. Also people here tend to exaggerate the importance of every word he utters. For example when he cries "luck" he knows well enough that's just part of the game, we all have similar thoughts sometimes when we play, we shouldn't take all overly serious. Then again I don't know him personally, maybe I'm being too optimistic.

wow that was crazy to watch. what a different world it was back then, and it's only about 10 years ago. the amount of money they threw at esports was just crazy in the time of the IT bubble and before the economy crashed. I mean none of that stuff was sustainable business in the least.

1) He probably is very busy with his company, etc. - meaning he doesnt have as many hours a day anymore to practice as much as he used to. And at this point, he would have to practice a ton, because he hasnt played as much the last 10 years like the other pros have.

2) Even if he came back and could be Nr. 1, he would make so little money that it's not even worth the effort. It's just too big of a risk to his brand/status in case he doesnt end up at the top. Heck, him being him, he'd just have to get 2nd at one event and people would flame the shit out of him. Even though players like rapha/evil/cypher/cooller don't get 1st always either... (or in the case of cooller, rarely get 1st). :)

What people don't understand is that most top athletes etc. are very arrogant. It's part of the reason that they are so successful. But with the really big sports, we don't notice so much, because they are trained to act differently infront of cameras, doing image campaigns, etc... And some personalities are just better at hiding their arrogance than others.

Either way, I'm personally not the biggest fatality fan myself, but you can't deny that he was/is smarter than all of these other pros who have wasted a decade of their life and have almost nothing to show for it - other than a few trophies and earning minimum wage type money. Fatality was smart enough to make a brand out of himself and build something that lasts longer than just him placing 1st at some tourny and get a few thousand dollars.

cs is 70% crosshair placement/gamesense 30% aim

but aim in cs:go is a lot harder to warm up your aim and activate that last 30%, since you gotta aim at the head and instead of the body like scrub game quake, plus you have to compensate for recoil

It seems to me like it would be a lot about reaction speed, a lot more than in Quake. Like when a head finally pops up where you were aiming for the last five minutes, you gotta shoot fast. I would probably suck at this game.

He hasn't got his own company actually. Normally companies provide a service for other companies but in this case Fatal1ty inc is just a name that is thrown as a sticker with a bunch of manufactures that sell shit. So for example Fatal1ty inc does not provide audio chips for Creative, does not manufacture capacitors for power supplies, does not make anything remotely related for ASrock, it's them who ring up the top guy and ask him how would he like to be on their cardbox. In other words fatal1ty doesn't look for promotions, he waits promoters to contact him. He doesn't even go to their headquarters to say "Yes maaate, very, very nice! Legendary hardware" he just goes to a promo events, Quakes on their hardware and gets the fuck out of there. That's why if you watched the whole stream you will notice at one point he said something like "Fucking mouse, keeps playing up". Hence after all this text what I'm trying to say is Fatal1ty inc is riding on a pipe dream from 10 years ago and doesn't make anything revolutionary worth buying. In fact half of his shit is overpriced and there is better alternative else where.

I'm not hating on John either but I wish he puts more effort into these kinda things and back up his promises if he is not going to pro game anymore. Hell even Cooller at one point decided to do some sort of unrelated business with a car dealership.

Champion FPS Gamer..." does he not feel the slightest embarrassment since he hasn't competed in years?
