i used to play some CS 1.6 back in the day, in parallel with quake 3 arena :D.

I prefer quake over counter-strike but i like some aspects of the CS gameplay, especially the precision needed to do a headshot or multi-kills. Team play/strategy aswell is nice.

More recently i got CS:GO for 16 bucks and played a bit of deathmatch FFA. Shit was good. It's a very fun game with solid gameplay. I played mainly on skilled server (no matchmaking) and my scores were like 55 kills 50 death. I think that with my quake background i can do more than decent at CS even while not playing it a lot.

Also, once i saw "mSx" play on the same server as me. He did pretty nice, like 40 kills 19 deaths. I specced him a bit and all i have to say is that i was quite impressed. Not as much impressed than when i watch evil, toxjq or cypher play quake, but still, it was good to watch actually :), very entertaining.

And finally i watched some demos of GeT_RiGhT, f0rest etc... There again, i was impressed at how well they know the game and the differents moves/strategies. Also their aim and movements are spot on.

Overall i would recommend CS:GO if you think quake is dead or quake is too fast, because it's an excellent game, better than CoD on consoles :D, less random, for sure.

CSGO is always there. I mostly play in such moments that quake is pretty dead for me :/

and yes imo Quake player can jump easily into CS, but CS player will not jump easily into Quake.

CoD4 was pretty fun, would like to pick it up on steam, if they didn't insist, that 7 years old game has to cost 25 euros with only 25% off on sale :S I liked the fact, that you could actually jump and run while still being able to hit people if you could aim, instead of spread going crazy like in CS.

yeah, stock game with killstreakes etc. was a bit bad, but promod was fun and awesome.

cs might be easier to jump into, but that's just because of its matchmaking system. hate to break it to you, but FYI cypher would never come to be a top cs player, even if he tried. he'd probably be positionally destroyed so often it wouldn't even be funny, and then he'd have no idea how to play with his team. idk how many hours he has, but for him to get to top level would take a lot more than 'just' 1k hours played.

played 1.6 also and wasnt really hard into... there was no MM.

ye obviously from that viewpoint its easier to install the game go on a public server and play.
but i think getting to the high level of any game takes similiarly big amounts of time.
my 10 year old brother started playing quake and he has no problems in t2-t3 so the game isnt as hard to get into

well, i used to play cod since 2003, and went from cod1 to cod4, and what i can say is that cod2 and espicially cod1 are pretty skillful in my opinion. as least as much as cs/csgo...and i played all of these games for "a good while".

imo CS is still more skillful than cod.

but i prefer cod or ET.

I think aim wise they go even, i know the rational thinking would say "but you cant aim in cs"...yeah, but i tried both games plenty...and imho they go pretty even aimwise...what makes the diffrence imo is the map complexity and the money management / weapon choice which gives cs that 'little' edge.

And yup, ET is also alot of fun, if it wasnt for the Servers which are full of bots nowadays, i would probably still play it every now and then.

more ground friction and lower ground speed iirc.

speed gets reset at max movespeed when u touch the ground, pretty much... RIP 1.3.
while ur midair u still get a lot of speed, not really beneficial for long distances, but not really detrimental if done correctly as opposed to CS:GO where u can't do it consistantly no matter what. bunny hopping (on the scrollwheel) is more for when u want to go to a box via another box/ledge/whatever without stopping midway, before ur 2nd jump, or if ure juking like a ninja ofc. circle/long jumps are more valuable in practice.
GO is always gonna be pretty shitty in my eyes, compared to the earlier iterations... but i still wanna get my global elite though...

Also if you vote and get cards right now, you can sell them, put 5$ on your steam wallet, get CSGO when it hits flash sales, daily or community choice, the money you get from the cards = enough to pay back your 5$ from the sales. But if you're scared you don't get your 5$ back then wait until you gather enough from the card drops, not sure how much one could get. If I was you I would get CS GO when it hits daily/flash/cc because the boxes that drop in game can be sold thus you can purchase more games on Steam $$$ or do some paypal transactions $$$ ą la TF2.

I downloaded CS 1.6 non steam to see what's up there.
First thing I tried was bunny hopping. Even if executed okayish it's far from cpma ;) It's a shame but it's better than nothing.

You could try TFC, should require about the same hardware as cs 1.6 and imo its a lot more fun. But its very dead :p QL is basically dota2 compared to tfc if you count how many that play :D Still pickups running though!! I think its like ~3euro on steam (the inferior version aka tf2 is free :/ )

CS 1.6 has this advantage of 24/7 de_dust2 with ~20 ping :O

TFC is as dead as they come with it seems like a few pickups on the weekends by players who WILL stomp the living daylights out of you.

Hasn't the been the case for TFC for awhile? I like TFC more then TF2 and it's a shame noone really plays tfc anymore.

Once leagues/competition died off, it used to be about 100 people that would play 10+ pickups a day. That lasted for maybe 4 years, lol.

There was hardly any money backing TFC, and not really even a single dollar after 2002, but league play lasted pretty well until about '08, with 7 annual world cups (the last being in '05 with some half-baked dreamer ideas later).

This site used to have everything. I'm sure the guy that runs it still has the database, but all of the functions like Clan vs Clan aren't up anymore.

TFC rarely focused on tournaments or LAN events because me being in the US could play someone in the EU pretty decently. The netcode is great. The early LAN events are only looked back with nostalgia for the most part because later era TFC had such a huge amount of skill above what people were doing back then. It's kind of laughable to compare wins back then vs wins now. Competition never stopped or cycled, and for years every player had a match every night of the week.

I've got some random docs of stuff like a complete Clan listen that runs from day 1 to 2005 and such.

Let me know what you think. Those should all be fairly enjoyable, some much older than others. Logistica is probably the best display of skill, with The Final Chapter and ECTFC 7 following. Some of the top tier skill avi's aren't very flashy, so they would be fairly boring for you to watch unless you've played those players yourself

Do you think TFC is pretty much off for anyone that would want to get back into it after being away for years? (in my case since 2001) Many hardcore games go away because of the insane amount of skill needed to play.

The skill in '04 would even crush you if you were the best player in '01. Not only would it be really hard to play if there were games, but you're lucky to find a game.

I was without internet for a time during some really bad health-related things and wanted stuff to watch, sometimes. I'd have done more, but, the one time I had a chance there wasn't much time that day.
