I really liked it. There's something similar in it to quake imo. Guess it's the fact that it's easy to pick up and have fun from the start but there's definitely some stuff that you will only be able to do after practicing a lot. Good players(like silw ;)) sometimes hit shots that could compare to hitting midair rockets in quake.

Theres been similar things in quake over the years but judging from the video this one seems the most polished, looks really nice.

Change to MaxSmoothedFrameRate=122 (or whatever FPS you want).

It looks fun. I wonder if players will be able to agree on positions in public matches or if it needs to be enforced somehow.

Our experience from the mod and the current public games show that there are hardly any problems. Players figure it out themselves, if there is no one who wants to play a specific position throughout the whole game.

It works like on a football ground with friends. "Hey can you go keep for a while? I want to play outside, too"

Of course there is a certain percentage of people that just want to ruin a game. This can't be determined. Like guys attacking the own mates @ clanarena.

Soon a kickvote-system will be implemented so you can get rid of them.

Kickvote is something every game needs. I don't know if you played Football Superstars, but that had lame map with LF RF CF etc that nobody followed. I was willing to pass that game for real football if it wasn't for a) goal keeper A.I (too good, too random) b) you do not control the football player, you pre-set the animation you want your player to execute. There is no feel to the game, you just wait and react to what happens and hopefully predict which animation is going to win the ball.

Ball3d was also another failure that was too awkward to play and make a simple accurate pass / shot as you have no idea how to lift the ball or how much power to put behind it. Despite that you can eventually get use to this hurdle, what killed it is the net code was bullshit, if you had flag that is not polish you get kicked from the servers (creator of the game is from Poland). Probably also the fact there are 30 people that play the game in peak time was also shit.

I hope with this stand alone version you guys worked well on the netcode :)

We didn't get any complaints about the netcode so far. The game feels responsive, the only problem we have so far is, that players from usa playing in europe, and th eother way round, lose this responsiveness with a ping of 180. Of course the game isn't meant to be player with such a ping, but though we try to make changes to give the players a possibility to actually play propperly with that ping. But that's internet tbh.
If anyone of you knows a game that has already solved this ping-problem, tell me please.

UDK needs it, but maybe we will port ut UE4 , no clue if it#s needer there, too, i can maybe give you an answer to that later on.

ping has to be a fundamental problem, really. Short of predicting the future, you can't remove that delay.

For me in cpma, 120ms is playable. Any higher than that it starts to feel bad. But 80-100 is almost normal. 101-120 is fine.

Don't know how this helps you, but that's how ping feels to me in cpma.

I tried it for a bit. It's pretty fun. Looking at the starter guide, there seems to be a ton of controls that are really similar and could use consolidating. Like shooting should be hold and release instead of hold left then right click or at least make right click the ctrl shot if there's no charge. The ball spin might have too many buttons, but it might be intuitive enough with some more experience.

what if you make a ranked games that you can join after reaching certain level (wich would mean you're already somewhat skilled) and unranked (full chillout) modes? i think stats give you competitiveness wich is what keeps people hooked on the game for longer period of time.

Thanks for your recommendations, all of them are planned and will be implemented in the near future.

The skilllevel will be determined by an elo-system. Something like qlranks. We know that an elo-system can lead to wrong judgements of players in specific cases, but in total it should give a good graduation of the playvers.


We are not excactly sure how stats will be a part of this rating.
What if a single players loses a match, but didn't do a single mistake and didn't lose a single ball to the enemy?
Should he be punished for a good game?
What if his stats look perfect, but 90% of his actions were useless and only statswhoring?
Maybe only the success of the team should be relevant, since it's a team-game?

We are not sure yet, and most likely we will catch up ideas from the community when it's time to implement that.


To stats in general:
I like the idea of stats in ranked games only. This probably should be a benefit for the beginners, because I think stats ruin a game and influence the gameplay on a negative way, too.

Personal stats will bring cancer.
Team stats may bring some motivation to not beeing a dick.
At the end of the day idea of stats is something that sounds good but it isn't

Stats will make players being asshole to other players. There will be pre-judgmental players towards one with less stats without any skill concern and maybe not allow somebody to play due to trying to "stack up" some hyped team. Then you have to worry about grinders who play 24/7 just to rank up. Stacking up was a big problem in Football Superstars as they will join a team, watch the player bar when a match was nearly ready to begin, then all 5-7 will quickly hit ready and before you know it, some random people amateur team of 7 just entered against heavy stat pro team of 7 just because they know how to manipulate the game matching.

The best game has always been like Deathball was, type name, join server, play, win/loose, the end. No consequences, nothing lost, nothing earned, just 30min fun and out.

Instead of concentrating on stats maybe you should try and create an internal mini tournament ladder like best out of 5-10 matches that carries you through the next round until it's over within couple of hours and a picture of a world cup :) just a silly example

There will be single-stats and teamstats.
The ranked game will have stats only, and an elosystem, neither stats nor elo-system for fun-games.
We are not sure about an ingame-shuffle-vote for ranked matches, the matchmaking should solve that problem, we have to test it.
But most likely there will be a shuffle-vote on fun-matches.

Random Shuffle has always been the best idea. This puts good players on a bad team even if they bitch about it. Deathball had it and it worked great.

Neither do I but friends do. You have to learn the characteristics of every "champion", their skills, the items you can buy and combine and then I haven't even mentioned the actual gameplay and the community uses a very specific vocabulary for everything.

The complexity of the gameplay is already set up, and won't be changed any more. We won't add content to the gameplay itself, only cosmetic stuff.
I guess everybody understands the principle of scoring a goal, evene without ever playing the game, thans to soccer and other sports.

- They are runing around killing stuff.
- At the end one motherfucker runs away because he has superior defrag skillz.

You try to explain a complete noob the point of delaying items, or when to fake a rocket jump.

Now, memory is a different thing, I personally gave up being any good at mobas when I realised the amount of information you have to now by heart to be at least slightly competitive. Man, those games actually require an insane amount of dedication, problem is that they're not rewarding for me.

it's very good. needs the rankings as the freeform nature of the game means I'm constantly switching positions to balance the team! some guys just hang up top, wait for the ball and take shots from ridiculous angles. with ranking to play for they may actually pass to those in a better position. thought of implementing the offside rule? you could have a line drawn in the floor in each half tracking the last player. maybe a roofed map so the ball is constantly in play? my earlier comment about stamina was unfounded. proper teamplay with boosting will make this game nicely tactical.

how about removing autopass altogether and have just instant shot and charge shot?

maybe we will add such a version of that map like in deathball, but most likely we won't or as a j4f map, because it benefits certain strategies too strong. uncontrolled volley-shots and uncontrolled saves by the keeper have to be punished and have to result in a disadvantage, this wouldn't be the case if we add a roof-wall.

offside-rule is an absolutely bad idea und ruins the flow of the gameplay and ruins the fun. that was already tested.
same for autopass. without autopass there won't be hardly any passes possible any more.
keep in mind: to find an open player which hasn't got an enemy player around him to mark and attack him once he's got the ball, will hardly be the case once games reach a higher standard of play.

The same will be the case with the hangers waiting for ball.
There is no way he can score vs a defender + keeper, or even reach the ball, plus he will be missing in the defence.

Very well said, auto passing will be something to try and avoid in high level play due to constantly being marked and rapid change of direction. A nice loose ball midfield and a good fight is where it's at.
The offside rule is stupid idea and it won't work in a fast paced game.

just played 3 games, the game seems fine,

but I kinda feel not rewarded enough and bored since most guys go offense and dont move back,

if there is a goalie, im in defense and the enemy team has 1 or 2 players near our 16m to half line, and I just have to babysit enemy attackers due to others staying in offense or the passing is quite bad while attacking :(

you can tryout a pickup @quakenet #supraball for organised games, and get a better taste on how actual gameplay works.
But make sure that you already know the basics, otherwise you will most likely be the one that ruins the game =D

with a steam greenlight bringing in more players and elo being introduced this should be less and less of a problem for good players. silw any eta on the ranking system?

Well, you could always speed up the ball physics and player default speed. I just meant that it would be a fun arena layout! =)

The gameplay itself could be however fast you wanted it to be.

edit: As for why you spent that much time, isn't that how you get Wakka's ultimate weapon/ball? And, IIRC, it takes quite some time(regardless of which weapon it awards :P).

The player must first come at least third in a blitzball tournament, or win 100 blitzball games, then speak to the bartender. She will ask the player to see the Celestial Mirror, and if obliged, will give the weapon."

So, if you got really unlucky by not getting at least 3rd, I guess you'd need 100 wins.. fuck. that. shit. lol

Gameplay as non-goalkeeper is really boring and kinda one-dimensional, as far as movement is concerned. Gotta add something to spice it up IMO, something that has to be managed or takes mechanical skill. Hell, even a sprint function would do. I really hate games in which there's no way to move around other than just walk in a straight line.

Other than that, it's really fun. I guess it's similar to real soccer/football, in which it's really difficult to competently goaltend, at least at a low skill level. That makes it really, really easy to score just by shooting straight at the net, no need to use those fancy curve shots.

It needs hats tho. Pan- would agree.

PS. Different gametypes would be really great with this concept, though I realize that might be something for really far down the line. A few ideas would be: dodgeball; "supradarts", wherein you have to hit targets using bounces and curve balls to navigate through small corridors; tennis/volleyball.

thats the core essence of the game, you can only win with your teammates.

a top player can still beat a whole defense full of noobs easily, but as soon as the skilllevel gets a bit closer than the extreme opposit, you cant do anything without teamplay.

Nah, I realized that I suck at this game after playing online for about 10 minutes (it reminded me of when I played Soccer at school in third grade... a whole lot of sitting around and watching better players do all the work :D). I've just had really bad experiences having to rely on teams, playing League of Legends for 4 years. Maybe I'll get over it some day...
