Some people like to be in the group of people who say they like techno. But nobody actually likes techno.
It's a cognitive dissonance thing... people go to an event hoping for great music. The music is complete shit.... but because they went and suffered through it... they convince themselves that it must've been awesome.

I was always convinced that most people who like going to clubs and shit just get infatuated with the fun while listening to techno and convince themselves they like techno.

I for one love to listen to techno while studying, because it doesn't distract much but still pushes me so I don't lose motivation quickly.

This entirely depends on the circumstance.
If you stop using drugs after a long time you would probably still listen to techno if techno was a regular thing for you doing drugs, because you are used to it. OR you would completely stop it, because it reminds you of drug times. So we don't know.

But then again, you completely failed to read my post. And I wonder how often I have to point it out. The harmony between repetitive 4/4-music and drugs is just one of the reasons people listen to techno.

Also a few people like it just because it gives them the ability to be immersed by the sheer repetitiveness combined with subtle progression be it on festivals when they dance with their friends (without drugs) or for studying, working, whatever. Some people also like it for sports because the constant rhythm kinda gives you a push.

And also some people who are DJs themselves or cherish the art of mixing music well like techno because it is about mixing tracks together and a different kind of live performance. They respect the art of mixing live. May this because they themselves do it or they are just fans.

And some people just like it. You know.

Basically the same arguments people who don't get classical music bring.

1) it's just 1 argument, not arguments.
2) people who "don't get classical music" are non-existent.

2) There is quite a lot of research on why certain tones have certain effects on human behaviour.
The studies found that all people, and even monkeys (although with music slightly altered to their communication), exhibit the same responce to tones/melodies/songs.
It is also found that classical music uses those tones/melodies in a way that makes sense. Aka when the 'story told by the music' is sad, the tones used are 'sad', and it does actually make you sad. If the story is happy more happy tones are in etc. So it is actually naturally impossible for people not to feel emotion while listening to music.

3) the short staccato notes with an extreme distortion (or dissonance) which are overly used in techno make people very edgy, angry, fearfull and arroused.

Now I don't like being angry / fearfull / edgy (or anything similar to that). And neither should any other human (as the function of those emotions are to make you leave).
This is why so many people who listen to techno do drugs while listening to it. Because when using shit you feel like you're on top of the world and therefor you reduce the fearfull and edgyness while maintaining the 'arroused' state (which is nice).

In short: nobody likes techno.

While I understand that anger / fearfulness / edyness aren't generally good emotions, have you considered the possibility that for some people feel these emotions to a low extent yet get aroused / hyped / excited / energized enough that it's worth it?

I haven't listened to techno much, and the reason I dislike the techno that I've heard (by no means an expert, so I'm not extending this argument into all of techno) is that it feels either like the equivalent of pointless prog or wankery from metal (and I love good prog and technical metal), except for that there's no technical skill involved and it's even more lazy.

However, you admitted that rock (and by extension even more so, I assume, metal) is similar in the regard that some of it's core repertoire of emotions are negative emotions, in particular anger. I don't think I've ever gotten really angry listening to metal, at least not enough to not enjoy the music. I only get uncomfortable due to overly fast / monotonic / dissonant messes, like avant garde or some of the stuff leaning towards hardcore. But that's because I couldn't comprehend / follow the melody, not because I didn't like the emotional content. With nearly all of the music that I enjoyed, the anger, edgyness or whatever else only served to elevate me into a state of exhilaration, never put me into uncomfortable emotions. This applies even in cases when I was actually angry, where usually that just gets channelled to get just that much more excited.

Why couldn't the same happen with techno? And why do you think you understand humans universally enough to assume that it can't happen, if you think it can't?

And it's one of the main differences between other music styles and techno.

I understand that as sort of a weakness to my argument, but the thing is, 95% of what I listen to is metal, and a lot of it is very heavy/dissonant, and most of it is quite fast. The only times it gets uncomfortable is if I can't follow the melody or rhythm, and that's the same with music of non-western scales besides the few cases that I already mentioned. Three different kinds of distinctive stuff I definitely, unequivocally enjoyed that by your argument would be considered unenjoyable:

This is a psychological effect and has nothing to do with the more philosophical question whether you really loved someone/-thing at a certain point in time, when you later decide to change your mind.

Certainly after that point you can't claim to have had "everlasting love, love till we die etc" so there is an upper bound to the appreciation you had.

You seem to claim (without any backing whats-o-ever btw: with your logic, maybe nobody likes country-music or nobody is atheist or nobody is religous) that everybody who likes it now, will eventually change his mind. I wasn't too convinced regarding techno's potential until I listened to Jon Hopkins' album Immunity.

It's actually a very solid album. Of techno. That by itself is a massive achievement, something I never expected to come across.
It has also gotten lots of praise in various reviews.

I'm not one to get hung up on genres. Structure aside I suppose techno is harsher sounding in general.

Personally I like to slam more labels on the same tracks. Sometimes I feel like a single label isnt clear enough.

As for that GA 013 mix, thats progressive into progressive trance, and its a damn good one :P

Lastly, I think Sasha's sets can sometimes sound monotone purely because hes a friggin wizard blending tracks together. It sounds so smooth sometimes you dont even know there are 3 tracks playing or something :P
