He improved his aim, massively. He can outshaft a lot of top players, its the same type of lg as evil, he lg's you while dodging and aggressing , its not pure high % but he just comes at you.

And also his rail is really good now. He filled all the holes in his game.

When he started quake he was all +forward. So he learned to +back. He only had a good rocket and decent lg, now hes got very good aim with all weapons.

His timing and map play were always perfect, so now hes a real beast.

I think it was the opposite. The first qcon he played QL in, he had crazy rail and tracking from q2, great timing, and his rockets were really bad compared to other top players. I remember there's s a t4 game against Rapha that stands out... Agree on the +forward though.

Would be cool to see him finally win a major lan.

I was saying he had great hitscan aim from playing q2, where rail and chain are the main weapons. Obviously the guns aren't identical. Because the speed of quake 2 rockets is so nerfed compared to q3 and ql, his rocket fights in ql were worse than other top players for a while. He's said the same thing if you check older interviews.

if QL had the Quake 2 delayed rail, i doubt you will see players hitting more than 35%...

I think he has a very weird playstyle when it comes to combat skills.
he has the solid aim and that sick timing every top playa has but when you see his pushes, it feels like he's a damn ghost, nothing hits him. it's almost as if he was running at your face in a straight line, yet you can't hit him and he just kills you. just next level dodge?

I agree with you Infuscomus! Dahang deserves respect. He's a very solid player all around. And good mentality aswell.

I will also be cheering for him in the duel final against cypher. But if cypher wins, which is like 75% sure, I won't be disappointed because cypher is from europe :D.

dahang and i played q2 when q3 was the active competitive game. we just preferred q2 at the time. There really wasn't that many great players in usa for q2 so we both made it to the top in duels and tdm pretty quickly. It was when q4 came out we decided to switch and compete with the q3 players (in q4). That is when he morphed into the beast he is now.

I would like to see him win a qcon,, too. .but now vs cypher ;) . IF there is evil, rapha, tox on other side, then sure I would cheer for Dahang..

But we will see it today.. Hope Cypher will play like 2 days ago, in great shape.. Then Im sure there wont be any problem for him to win..

Last qcon finals , he played really bad first two maps, and had luck at t7... but thats par of the game..

Dahang hits some amazing rails that I don't see many players ever even go for.

The USA had by far the biggest scene then, plus he did beat billox who won that UK tourney. Almost all the tournaments were in the USA to boot. There were no impressive demos or anything coming out of EU at the time. I mean this was 1996-98. I don't think it's an unfair claim.

I know you put entropy and Reptile on a pedestal but I don't see them as long lasting players. Entropy entered Red Annihilation and thats' it. I don't care about what or how you think of him as a player or what so and so said about him, I want tournament results. And outside of Red Annihilation he never competed anymore. Another thing you overrate about back then is how many players played. Even fat said in a video at a quakecon about a year ago that the online base was pretty niche for quake. Many people played those games for the single player experience and thats it. I don't even think quake 3 cracked a million because it was online only. Doom 3 is still ID software's best selling game which Tim Wiltis said sold 3.2 million copies. I believe quake 2 is the highest selling quake game that sold 2.1 million copies. While not a small amount of copies sold gaming was viewed as more as a nerd thing back then, especially in the PC space. And thos esales numbers don't even compare to the likes of todays big fps franchises which are far higher.

96 to 97 were huge for quake 1. Just enormous. I haven't seen servers so jam-packed for any game at any time since. Netquake and quakeworld were both filled to the brim.

I don't know how the actual numbers coincide with sales or other statistics, but in my experience it was absolutely huge. Alive, electric, bumpin'.

I don't think he ever 'officially' retired. Most players don't. He just stopped playing.

People have rose tinted glasses around here: multiplayer quake never was as enormous as lots think it was. Single player doom was huge in today's standards, not multiplayer quake. Yes pub play was quite enjoyable and maybe bigger than today in team modes and ffa, but it wasn't really huge.

OK we don't have many numbers, just the experiences. Numbers say sales wise quake was never much relevant, but piracy is of the essence here. With that said, remember that even in those days it was clear that CS surpassed quake right from the start and that quake had many mods and patch differences going on at the same time, so it was quite fragmented. Also duel was the least played mod, a niche.

Then competitions such as quakecon and others were not as competitive like they are now, by any means whatsoever. They were practically tournaments of players residing in some states within one country, playing the niche mod, that met the requirements of having an internet connection available to 0.1% of people and/or subscribed to a service for being able to play the tournaments or in the servers to practice. That's how thresh won the Ferrari.

Finally, it's impossible to compare players and countries if they did not clash. If they did not play then it's fan-faction, no matter how many times you repeat your points. The only things that can be said here are that across the globe there were many great players and competitions going on no matter that they weren't US known, some as big as quakecon and of the skill level of thresh and others, and that it's obvious the skill level massively increased when the game's competitions finally went global.

In the end the issue comes down to the usual problem of americans saying their local champions are the world champions, then hyping one person above the rest to absurd extents for simplification's sake then getting advertised everywhere. Sadly the same thing is happening in QL as well, with the vast amount of people saying that rapha is the best QL dueler ever and he gets the advertising deals, and in 15 years will be remembered as the best. However, when you look at the numbers it's clear that cypher is the best in QL, but he isn't american so he doesn't get recognized and hyped to absurd levels. The same happened with voo and fat in PK as well, with people saying fat was the clear best when in reality voo was the one that won the championship and the most tournaments.

The only player that ever dominated a global scene in "arena" shooters was tox, hence why he is so respected by those in the know and why no one in this community ever talks about thresh and fat others that allegedly did so well, according to mass media that doesn't know shit.

If I a game sells a million copies, but only like 500 people play it online regularly, then who cares. If a game sells 50,000 copies, and every one of them plays it online, then that's a big deal. That's the kind of thing us multiplayer folk like.

Here are some nice memories of someone who was there from 1998, covering UK alone. Not covering NetQuake, CTF, TF and every other crazy shit ppl played in those days, not to mention the hobby quakers.

John Romero even said quake 1's scene wasn't that enormous and most people played it for the single player. Most people played doom 1 and 2 for single player as well. But don't try to deal with Lorfa, he once said he though enthropy of red annihilation was the best player ever despite only competing in one tournament.

I already stated why I didn't care for Thresh. Enthropy career in pro-tournaments started and ended at Red Annihilation. Reptile left 1vs1 dueling after 2 tournaments. These weren't long rivalries and these weren't players that would have a long spanning career in pro gaming. Both enthropy and reptile didn't even last 1 year in 1vs1 before they quit.


I know this is going to sound controversial but I personally agree with cooller when he said zero4 was "mostly rail" Carmac at ggl did and interview and cooller was never impressed with zero4 and only thought he got as far as he did because of his great rail gun. Cooller went on to defeat zero4 in many tournaments.

Cooller did another interview a few years ago (during the quakelive era) and said again that he personally was never impressed with zero4. I personally never was either. And yeah, I think he was mostly great at prot4 because of his amazing rail aim during that era he was dominating on it.

Zero4's advatnage in that era was his great rail aim. He doesn't have that advantage anymore and you can see that in his tournament results.

In the modern quakelive era zero4 is nothing. Zero4 no longer has that railgun advantage that he used to. He's just a has been that pops up occasionally at tournaments and gets beat up on by the new era players that are far better then he is.

And cooller is personally my favorite quake player. I think he changed the metagame of quake the most and todays top players have copied so much of his gameplay style that he set back in 2002-2004.

In the end he was one of the very few in the world that had access to actual practice, to compete and to get promoted. The barriers of entry were massive back then. Nowadays there's thousands and thousands of really competitive players across many games and pretty much everyone can become a "pro" if they want to, whereas in his days there were....maybe 5-10 competitive players, all in the same part of the planet, in a specific coast, then organizers of non competitive gaming events calling their champions the world champions, despite not facing anyone (good) from overseas, because that's how marketing works.

Not saying his gaming achievements don't count for something, as what does is being the best of your time and conditions, plus the traveling and self promotion isn't something effortless, but pro gaming and multiplayer gaming these days are not even remotely comparable to what it was 20, 15 years ago. Now both are way bigger and especially way more competitive, most importantly that now it's global and everyone has access to it.

You know, it'd be quite fun to see id releasing activity numbers from those days, because people overrate doom and quake multiplayer way, way too much. I'd go as far as saying that QL today has more public activity than what Q1 ever had, plus certainly QL has way more competitions than what Q1 ever had, and even then QL is considered completely dead by today's gaming standards.

..and yes I understand the concept of less players = more chance for one player to be dominant. These players were incredibly strong though.

For example in the RA tourney:

Entropy had a bit of a breakdown in the last match, before that he was nearly unstoppable. He even went 55 0 in his last round FFAs not being fragged once. He was favorited to win the tournament even. Hijinks told me that he had practiced with him, and said that his aim was "uncanny". At the time coming from Hijinks, that comment was very hard to comprehend considering that jinks' aim was absolutely top notch.

Gollum was a top east coast player, and later went on to win the next big tournament, cpl's "The Frag". He was patient, methodical, extremely consistent, and appeared never to get nervous. I saw him in person at the CPL event. He was overconfident even, and rightfully so if you had seen him play dm4 in person. His movement and control were extraordinary. Thresh even struggled a bit against him in RA.

Unholy was incredibly motivated at the time, and he would put in insane hours. In a brief stint in QL he played for over 24 hours straight. He said he had done that kind of thing all the time in the early days of quake. He had control and aim well ahead of his time. In training matches he was one of the few players who could really bother thresh in a dm2 "stair match" people played in those days for practice. The only weakness he had really was that he tended to be a dm6 specialist.

Kiljoy was a friend and clanmate of Unholy's, and considered by some to have been a superior player even.

Reptile was another super strong contender. He was favorited to win the tournament by some as well. An FFA master and the first real 'shaft whore'. He had a signature move on dm6: walking over the megahealth the instant that it spawned.

In those days the mega spawned 20 seconds after the last player who picked it up's health dropped to less than 101. So you either had to know it had been enough time, or have hurt the opponent sufficiently and know that the timer had started. Reptile was kind of an early strenx+czm combination.

Cross, which is Thresh's brother Lyle was almost as strong as Thresh himself. It's wild that he did not make it into the top 4. He was very likely a consistent practice partner for thresh and would have known his game inside and out.

B2, ohhh man. Also part of Thresh's "clique", he was a player of extraordinary talent. He, like Entropy had this 'one rocket' talent, where he could make direct rocket shots so often that it was practically second nature. He was an unbelievable menace in TDM like this, making the most out of limited ammo by taking out opponents in a single shot. He's also likely to have been a sparring partner for Thresh.

Kenn, another of Thresh's clan and likely sparring partner was a relatively unknown, and very underrated player. Later he played TDM with deathrow under the name 'Spear'.

Hijinks, I'm still surprised he only made it to 4th place. This guy, I knew him in real life somewhat, and I can tell you that he played like as much as humanly possible. He was #2 in the quakeworld skill rating list, second only to XoLeRaS, of doom2 fame. Hijinks was kind of an early Tox, incredible control and aim, naturally and reliably strong. He also managed all of this on dialup.

Jinks like Reptile was an FFA master and knew each map in and out. Similar to Entropy he ended up on e1m2 against Thresh, to which he conceded that Thresh's superior, albeit unusual strategy of controlling ammo, as opposed to health/armor/weapons led to a deserved victory.

You have to keep in mind that for one, Quake was _the_ multiplayer game at the time. It didn't share much population wise with any other multiplayer game, of which there weren't that many.

The other thing is that these were adult humans with a chance to win a Ferrari, and all they had to do was beat some people at a video game. They fought viciously for it.

That was just at RA, which was at E3 in '97. Subsequent tournaments saw even more super strong, ambitious players.

There are far more gamers playing online gaming now then back then. Far far more. Todays big franchises like halo, call of duty and battlefield sell far more copies then the quake series ever did. FAr more. And gaming sales are far higher today then they were back in the 90s. There was absolutely nothing special about back then except for the fact that most people had terrible/primitive internet connections.

The fact remains that thresh won every duel event he entered in, across 4 games: doom2, hexen, quake1, and quake2. Winning the Ferrari puts his esports earnings up on par with some of today's top winners.

It's true he didn't enter many events, and he was only around for a short period in the early inception of esports, but he was incredibly influential and a lot of modern players learned a great deal from his games when they were learning to play.

Actually at that MS Tournament for whatever stupid reason they played Hexen in the final. It wasn't even told that they would play that game in the finals.


I wouldn't count that as a victory for Hexen when it was just a random idiotic thing they decided to put in the final match of the tournament.

Dahang got owned by Cypher 3 maps in a row. GET REKT!!!!

The fact that they were all potent comebacks/momentum-shifts is what makes it pretty convincing to me =) That said, Dahang still did a phenomenal job

That's actually an observation worth making. And in this context the "u rush too much" line is really kind of ironic, because cypher did pretty much the opposite of what he's known to do - "vanish" when being out of control - and rushed himself, specifically on the first two maps, Except his rushes weren't really rushy resp. hasty and just better planned and executed than dahang's, providing dahang with zero breathing breaks. In fact, even though initially giving up frags on all three maps there's apparently never been a moment of doubt in cypher's mind that he would get them back eventually. Mentally, this final strikes me as one of the most outstanding games I've ever seen.

Always thought DaHanG was a really cool nickname. It's weird in a way, but it just fits perfectly in Quake for some reason.

Having a good nickname is definitely an underrated factor. If you have a cool nickname your opponents will respect you more on a subconscious level.

Maybe p0ni would have been a top contender with a more mature nickname, who knows?

I sometimes hypothesize that ZeRo4 doesn't get much respect because of his nickname.

Back in the day most guys used simple nicks with hints of leetspeak. People made funny nicks just for lol.

Some hint at hidden needs, like an1mal_lover or S0dom or ANALyzer or SpankME.

Oh and newbies usually get deadly nicks with words like KILLER PREDATOR MOFO DEATH DESTROYER etc because it's supposed to hint @ their killer skill capabilities :D

There are a lot of dudes who are extremely good @ quake and doesn't care whether their nicks sound "mature" or not.

DaHanG's nick is okay I guess, he could name himself EvilSnowman for all he cares, he still would win Qcon.

The only guy I ever worshipped in Quake was Fatal, and I still remember ppl calling out "he's a marketing biatch, he sold himself for money". I'd like to see these guys now with all of these pros sponsored by EVIL COMPANIES THAT WANT OUR MONEY.

I think Evil has the best nickname in quake history, even though Evil is not my favorite player(he's up there for me, but not top if I had to make a list :D).

Just the word, itself, can conjure many horrific images and thoughts. Evil is not a tangible thing or item. It is an idea; a feeling.

Consider, then, the ambiance of quake 3. Consider the mood of a lot of the maps, the blood, pentagrams, gibs, etc.

Then, with all of that, he is one of the best.

He is Evil.

Yep opponents will respect a player like that from the nick alone. Tox was noticeably nervous and respecting Evil way too much in the bronze match for example. On a subconscious level Tox will associate the Evil name with fear, anxiety etc.

If Evil was named yay0 or some other silly stuff, the same effect wouldn't be there.

Damn... Dahang should have renamed to "Decypher" before playing Cypher in the final - it would have made all the difference. Cypher would have just shit his pants thinking Dahang decyphered him!

Toxic is an intimidating name, and yet it didn't have particular effect on Dahang. And what is there on the Dahang name that scared Tox so much? Matter of the fact is that names are irrelevant. You see all kind of shit names in the months you practice online. Especially if you feast on noobs like Toxic sistematically does.
You can call yourself big daddy or lil bro, once the match starts it's your own nerves and how the opponent deals you that matters.

Tox made a shitton of dumb mistakes against Dahang, and his aim was shacky. Same thing against Evil. He just reverted back to his own old behaviour, too passive and tentative. If he would have played differently, he would have won, and pretty easily.
It looked like he didn't believe in himself, in his own strenghts. Like being full stacked and with all weapons and yet limiting to trade rockets with Dahang and barely escaping alive when he could have done what he does better, switch to lg after the first rocket and shaft the hell outta the opponent.
And what about the lg fights? Dealing immense damage, and yet losing the coolness and trying to jump away or doing harmful drops, being killed prior time.

But i have to disagree. Evil and Demon names are pretty lame, too generic and abused.

Dahang, CZM, Cooller, Rapha are original and stands out more. Cypher not so much, but maybe it's only a mine problem, when i hear it i think of the Cypher character in the Matrix movie. Also cypher is an english term, i guess for native speakers the effect is even worse :/

Can't argue with that. It may sounds really generic, indeed. Expecially considering it's origin, iirc, Cooller used to read a magazine named "Cool" or something, and for this reason some friends made the joke to call him "cooler", with an l, if i'm not mistaken.

You should watch his Q2 matches... dude has been a beast for a LONG time. Even when he first started playing Q3 he was holding it down against some very high skilled players.

For anyone who was hardcore in q2 and q3 (and I do mean hardcore, not some pinky shit), QL looks like molasses with bunch of targets running around...btw Dahang was a besty boy...liked his performances against like purri or tox back in the day in q2 @ Qcon...

DaHangs best performance I remember was one of the last q4 tourneys when tox was in full shape, went to the last minute in a 2xbo3 DE final (that was 90 min of awesome quake:). q4 even had q4tv with multipov built in in the patches from 1.4 onwards so no bla bla casters etc..

Great player. Have it's own style. Maybe it's Q2 background...
He doens't have "candy-eye flying around map" movement like cypher, evil, cooller, but he plays very effective. At any lan i always looking at him as one of few to win it. He is underrated, becouse he doesn't yet won big lan, but overall his results are realy good!
ps. he is great guy in real life , as I talked a bit with him @ DH.
