grappling hook sounds everywhere!

Yes there are grapple sounds, a good indicator of who, what and where people are. Shame there wasn't a command to turn off your own grapple sound, but hey, there are plenty of other sounds to enjoy.

Unfortunately they are not multiview (.mvd) ones, and noone I know of has the other demos. Would have liked to see some of Whez's. I used qwdtools to convert two of them from .qwd to .mvd, but as they were recorded in single pov perspective, it doesn't seem to change to other users.. maybe someone else knows how to?

haha, yeah definitely not a slow game, when you consider its with ball mice :0 In those days, the servers were all packed day and night, amazing stuff, very addictive. I think that "Spill the blood" was one of the smaller maps, hence the amount of turning needed.

DCS were a strong side on that map, some of the earlier games, with weapon respawn, were cleaner, and less frantic. But Chipie and DCS totally screwing with our quad control, by discharging in LAVA, Nasty business, and killing us LOL, so we changed to control the LG at quad time, and Rocco retaliated in style :)

played on clan lokis minion q1/qw ctf for about a year
i was the main offensive guy on the team. hence why i had so much wrist pain.
ended up going to qwtf to give my joints a break ;p

i got half way through your demo. started noticing some good teamwork and strats after a few minutes

Your welcome, was fun doing it. TBH downloading and, loading up nQUake was very easy. And, playing at 1920 x 1080 with nQuake preset config capped at 308 fps was unbelievably smooth. The physics are so lag free, compared with the swinging side saddle bagged quakelive of today!

Wish I had these graphics and pc equipment back in those days, instead of my pent pro, voodoo 3dfx card with frames capped at 55 fps!!!

You should download nQuake you get the first episode free too, and can upgrade via "steam" worth every penny.

Noob question: Do you have to use the grappling hook that much, is there no strafe/bunnyhopping?

You don't have to, you can do what suits you and your game play. Worked for me at that time :) And yes there is and was straffe jumping and bunnyhopping.

But this was back in 1999, and for me then I'd say yes to grapple for both straight line speed movements "and" for vertical movements. Although I'd probably build in more bunnyhopping in today's game for building and maintaining horizontal speed.

(I may be wrong, but I don't think that the techniques of bunny speed and using left and right to build speed, was really as commonly known or as practical in CTF in 98-99. I think only some of the DM'ers in CTF were applying it then, but still grapple movement nubs like me, could move fast enough.)

I'd say "yes" because of less vertical predictability, which is harder for some players to combat at varying air speeds, (because of peoples aim, tracking ability, fov and sensitivity). Ultimately being elusive, taking less dmg, displacing the defenders, and making the defence take the "eye off the candy", and look at me in the air, while their flag was nicked :) With bunnyhopping at speed there is quite a bit of vertical predictability, which makes the player possibly easier to hit and a more predictable route.

I do rate the QW style grapple and its dynamics, especially getting out of the way of spam. And also creating more opportunities to do a flag run. Multiple servers of 8v8 games of CTF were always packed, cus u could still get in even with 4-5 players on def. Without grapple you really need to stack up properly b4 having a chance of getting out v a good def..

The grapple creating more opportunities for a bit of magic. This cap in this movie below from 2005 at 9 minutes 20 seconds, shows Blood_Dog, doing his magic. He uses both grapple and bunny, and would never have got out of that base with Bunnyhopping, however uses it after.

I have found the grapple hook in QuakeLive! and applied with the PQL physics been able to play some PQL CTF.

I'm a bit rusty after getting my trusty Grapple off the mantelpiece after 14 years. But as in your question above, I think I have demonstrated both grapple and movement in PQL. Feels very similar to QWCTF, and Spider Crossings seems like the new Spill the Blood to me :)

This is good to see. In New Zealand there's still a bunch of quakers that get together every now and then to play QWCTF. It is physically the most intense game I've played - a real blast.

Good to here its alive and kicking. Funny how RL can stop play for ages, and this game still lives on in the souls of many :) Sure is intense, is there anything faster, with so many things to time, areas and items to control at the right time? I just remember the sheer brilliance of the game having grapple tbh, for nubs like me, with bad movement (b4 the buinnyhopping revolution), could actually get to the place where it really mattered in time to support your team. How does the game play now with bunny hopping speed combined with grapple?

Hi Dyno, I remember Whez from Q3 CTF, what was his clan again? I've completely forgotten, all I remember is how skilled they were. Also you were in DC for TDM weren't you? You know Zoser and Mozilla still play a bit of Qlive?

Yeah I was in DC TDM,was hard competing for a spot in DC with the likes of Sujoy, ACQ, Nightwing, Tek and the rest (http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/Demonic_Core), luckily I was the modemer and got a spot :) Zos was cool, he came played CTF with me in ASQ, was great Def guy, haven't seen him in a while. I know Whez used to play for E with Chipie in Q3 I think.. I'm still in touch with Whez, v good player. I get him to read this. Do you remember Slick?, he was beast at qw in DM and CTF, part of QPD and DS. Always the one I had to look out for in CTF. Haven't heard form him in a while. I see Moz every now and again on QL..

It's hard to say since I never played Q1CTF or QWCTF without bunnyhopping. Obviously it's much much faster, and I think better off because of that. I know a few people prefer Q1CTF.

I miss QW CTF/TDM and Duel a lot. don't get me wrong, I enjoy quakelive, but the raw pace and agility of QW... it separated the good from the not so good. Where as now, its a lot more even playing field.

Strom, The team was called - E aka Emporio/Extreme.
Whez asked me if I wanted to start a team with him... He poached me from the Number 1 team in the UK, which was ASQ.. awesome line up... Dyno, Slick, Axen, Jaffa, Mongo just to mention a few... He grabbed a few of the top euro players, then that's how it all began.

Netgamez 99 was such a Buz, ive been to a few Quake LAN's.. mainly Q3, but never have I experienced anything like that... and to be part of such a strong team was just an Honour.
Loved every second of Netgamez and spending it with the guys I went with(At the time some were my quake idols).
The instant recognition when jumping on server when I got back was pretty awesome too.

Yeah Razza, Mozilla, Q50, Koopa, Zoser are playing some Quakelive, speak to them still.

Would be awesome to get "CTF2M3 Spill the blood" for CTF and
DM4 for duel in Quakelive... even if for Nostalgia only purposes!
