How many of these arena shooters are gonna come in near future ?

almost 10 years silence from these games coming out, and BANG ! Over 9000 pops up same time.

Lets say there are 10 projects.

Out of those 5 will be cancelled before the game is final. Other two will be clones of already dead games and communities so will be forgotten (except by their 17 players), and only three will have a shot at becoming something noteworthy.

Three current games in a whole entire subgenre is quite a few.

The thing is, before, it was an obscure genre nobody cared about. Now it's mostly the same, but the difference is that esports is blowing up, and a lot of oldschool people in the esports industry are saying "the one game we lack is an DM 1v1 shooter."

Models look similar to Tribes:Ascend. Difference is new maps, and: no classes, no levelling, no regenerating health, no reload, no free to play.
They added more "bloody-screen" and screen shake crap, so it's a no.

Thats why I think that QL has still some potential.

It's an old engine, sure. But an engine made by the Carmack himself, the Master of Code. No matter how you look at it or how hard you deny it, QL has a royal lineage and still delivers, even 15 years after vq3 arrival.

Wolfenstein: New Order is just all round pretty good, and that's the tech5 engine so I think he still had influence in that too.

there is nothing incredible about anything carmack has done since doom 3. every game since has had a 60 fps cap, shitty graphics, no multi gpu support, and texture streaming issues, among other things. megatextures is cool but the market isn't ready for it yet.

BTW I have immense respect for him. The man is an insane coder and a visionary. He pretty much knows that the time of leaps is over, hence no super-breakthrough games like older Quakes.

He left id because of the strife between Zenimax and id in regards to Occulus Rift. But, having joined the Occulus VR, he's searching for a way to create another leap in gaming. He might not find it, yet he's still a legendary figure in gaming community.

Framerate caps. Yet most games struggle to hit 60fps at 720p on the new generation consoles, most run at ~30fps. Performance wise for a current gen engine the id tech engine is great and outperforms probably everything out there!

For PC sure you can do with higher framerates, and I am sure had g sync been available for 10 years it would not have had the cap or the 60fps target, but just 30+ fps for any of the games.

RAGE is what 25gb?
Wolfenstein is 50gb
but in both cases how much of that is audio?

TitanFall is 48gb but that's with 38gb of uncompressed audio.

megatxture is not why games these days are large.

Also, I only experienced pop-in when first entering the map after load on my system in RAGE on my old system let alone my i7.

In Wolfenstein I didn't get any pop-in whatsoever.

the audio in wolfenstein is 405 MB, the textures are about 33 GB, and there's about 6 GB worth of video cutscenes. i don't have rage so i can't comment on it. wolfenstein's textures for 90% of the world are complete shit. the only things that look good are the characters. 33 GB of textures and most of the game is a blurry mess, lol. i thought the triple digit size of textures for proper megatexture implementation was something that came from carmack himself, but apparently it was just a community-started rumor. at least, i can't find a source that isn't saying the same thing every other source is. but still, i would expect for a game like wolfenstein to have proper textures, you'd be looking at at least triple the size. i think you're the only person in the world to not have texture pop-in issues with wolfenstein, considering people who ran the game off of an ssd with 4770ks and gtx titans did.

4770, samsung 840 evo ssd and 4gb zotac 750ti sc, I put all the detail settings to high which is the maximum, VT compress disabled, and have no pop-in issues whatsoever. Everything is fully loaded before the map shows. The game's using 1,441mb system ram atm, gpu-z says 1636 mb of ram is in use on the graphics card but that's total, not game specific.

id software did offer their engines and technologies, from idtech4 and onwards. Also idtech4 was criticized a whole lot back in the day and idtech5 still has major flaws to this day.

I'm really impressed by the work these guys have done on the engine, looks amazing. And I've been following the development. But trying to recreate CPM is a huge, huge huge error. CPM gameplay is a dumb abomination who's ghost has haunted the Quake scene for long enough.
I really hope that the Reflex guys take the game in some new direction, they have an amazing platform to do something great. Just hope they do that instead of recreating CPMA.

the only thing i see from cpm in reflex is the movement, weapons and switch time are different besides they are focusing on all that crap that ID never got bothered to do for quake because they're either ignorant or retarded, im talking about stuff like multipov gtv or q3mme in-game, ladders, matchmaking and good platform to enjoy with friends among other stuff. There will be new maps everyday because it's just so simple to build them.

think about cpm as an unfinished q3 mod, not a game, think about that mod as a very alpha state of a newer game or bigger project. I have been playing cpm for 6 years and i can see the flaws of the gameplay myself, but from that to "dumb abomination" there's a huge step, if people still play that is because there's something about it, thank god cpm exists and newborn has the balls to pull this off because if we have to keep trusting ID and quake we are screwed; all the features i mentioned above should had been implemented for q4 when quake was popular instead of making another SP game...

Out of interest, what do you consider CPM's flaws? Where do you think VQ3/VQL is better?

main cpm flaws:

- quake clipping makes it even easier to rush or performing doublejumps and shit.
- instaswitch makes positioning a bit more random.
- You can hear too much. (it's better than QL tho).
- Most played maps are too small (a good size for a map is cpm15).
- shaft is too strong (10-10-10), it is not xerp, it's the LG itself. it is the weapon to link with RG or RL, not enough with the dmg it delivers you can also multiply it with a rocket or a rail.
- plasmagun is too hard to hit.
- Railgun.
- hitbox a bit too big?
- knockback too high?

Where vql is better:

- It has more players.

I disagree with shaft being too strong, if it weren't the rail would be much easier to abuse. But yeah, ideal case would be the removal of the railgun.

Also I'd say knockback is not too high for all the weapons, but for some/most, yeah.

by quake clipping i mean going at high speed and crash against a wall but somehow you go thru it if you hit it a little bit, i think this should be punished a bit more to reduce the aggressiveness sometimes (defraggers love that tho : P)

2gd was actually a legit Quake 4 player. Reborn can be considered new and having promise as it isn't trying to just rehash a previous iteration of Quake.

Thats a risk for all of the new indie arena fps games. I think Reflex already has had a much better reception than Xonotic has had in its lifetime so I think it will do better.

Have you looked at any free 2 play games? You do realise that the highest income generating games on phones are the ones that have the free 2 play model. f2p PC games are also extremely lucrative. This means there is zero barrier to entry, so anybody can try the game. If people enjoy the game then they'll make ingame purchases through microtransactions.

You should research the model, I won't explain it as well as others.

The only issues with f2p are cheaters (but they arent exclusive to f2p) and pay to win.

If a game is free to play and doesnt have pay to win microtransactions or things you HAVE to buy to play then I have no issue with it at all.

You'd think if they wanted a deathmatch game with this much "no bullshit, pure '99 deathmatch gameplay" stuff then they wouldnt have included vehicles. Or at least wouldnt make them such a huge part of the trailer.

the truth is you're way more likely to retry or give another game a chance if you paid $20 for it, as opposed to paying nothing. I will uninstall free games all day when I don't like them after first try, but if I pay $15 for something I give it another chance or two because I actually paid something for it.

plus if it's free, they have to make money somehow. I rather pay $20 for an arena game knowing there won't be something ugly/cheesy/useless stuff trying to be sold in-game.

The funniest part is that if you paid even a little attention to gaming outside of Quake, you'd know that TF2 and the f2p moba's are the exception, not the rule. Most f2p games die within a year, without making much of a profit.

it might be promising to you (and me) but if you wonder why at the same time such games dont succeed it becomes obvious: a quakeplayer that wants something that resembles quake isnt representing a significant part of the general playerbase. instead a cpma player is somewhat of an maverick even within a group of mavericks and while they are a tiny minority to begin with, chances are they are also stubborn enough to just stick to their original game.

i have no idea what kind of these new fps games will succeed in the end. but i wouldnt be suprised if it wasnt the kind of game i like myself. toxikk might be in a good spot with their mixture of classic gameplay + modern environment. in the end from a player perspective we can actually be glad that there are so many different approaches to revive the genre. we can just lean back and watch what game will turn out to win this race in the end.

i think toxikk might just have a decent playerbase and if it gets big enough, maybe competition will grow and out of that we can see things like demo features, options for better visual clarity (maybe not to the degree of fullbrights and r_picmip 8) but who knows

Point is, they aren't wasting someone's time doing maps that could work on the things you mentioned.

But you missed the point, having the level designer actually designing levels doesn't mean their work focus is misplaced.

The only thing I could agree on is that making levels while the movements are not definitive is too early as any change to the movements may render the maps unfit. But not having that level designer making maps wouldn't make the coding of anything you mentioned any faster.

I feel we will be going in circles now and you won't admit that what you first said was rather silly.

what i first said was based on 2 possible scenarios i had in mind:

1) they are aware on whats needed to develop a successful multiplayer/esport fps game in 2014/15 and the sole reason for their presentation videos as of late containing nothing but leveldesign is that fancy graphics are more eye catchy than anything else.

2) they are stuck in the times where leveldesign and graphics were way more important than nowadays and this will become another unrealengine4 techdemo with ok'ish gameplay but no emphasis on whats needed to catch the attentation of yolo generation whose maximum attention spawn corresponds to the length of a music clip.

maybe its 1); but i actually think its 2). im not experienced in this by any means but if i would have to create a game like this i would throw my resources at gameplay, accessibility, 1 click - play navigation & easy to start, hard to master balancing before even thinking about texture & level design. and in my presentation videos i would advertise those features hard and push the game to kickstarter and then steam early access to get some hype going and a playerblase to play this basic but fun kind of game. after that id bring in fancy textures, community favourite maps (that could be done in map makers contests) and additions like more than the 3 basic weapons i had at start and whatnot.

meh whatever. all i wanted to say was that i have the bad feeling they may be putting the cart before the horse here

i think it's only 2gd and his reborn wich can succed in building "brilliant game". reflex devs can't gather resources to make this game be complete, up to 2015 standards.

none of this projects will succed imho, it's only some big company that can make somewhat succesful product unless reflex owners or 2gd would sign a contract or partnership or smth with such company.
