I don't think 100 users at every moment is unrealistic. For example, I just added up all players on servers in server browser, and there is at least 315 players, and that's not counting servers that are already full, duel servers and lower tiered servers which are not visible.

That's the total, ever. The active ones these days are less than those that sometime achieved those awards. If the award numbers are correct then QL certainly has less than 30,000 active players.

After that we have to determine what activity means. The interested companies will say the term is as broad as possible, so someone playing once a year counts as active, while the playerbase will think of something more realistic, like once a month.

It's hard to estimate active players really. At least we know it's certainly less than 30,000. I'd guesstimate it's around 10,000 to 20,000 playing once every month, with 1,000-2,000 subs total, steadily decreasing.

With $36 per each sub tops it's borderline non feasible to keep the game up, which is why we pushed the idea to have subs + dlc, like pretty much all other games with subscriptions and especially those with not huge numbers, but so far they haven't implemented the idea. #fucksponge

As for CA being different. Yeah, it is. But, even if duel were more liked, I still wouldn't play it, much, I think. I enjoy team games more. But NA is dead in ctf/tdm aside from the people that take 40 minutes bitching about maps and teams. By that time, you can usually play at least 2 CA matches.

If that were true; what would those people expect? To win their first match in a game they never played before? That doesn't make sense.

They prolly expect to have fun, but they join tier 4 servers, so they gets destroyed, and often insulted and kicked. Then they disappear forever (which has nothing to do with the gameplay itself).

But newbies are matched to tier 3 (not tier 4).

There's another reason why that quote doesn't make sense.
The quote implies that newbies get matched with opponents that are too strong.
But sponge himself is in charge of matchmaking (as the programmer). If he thinks they get matched badly he's the one who can fix that (match them to tier 2 if tier 3 is too strong).

I know they can join tier 4, but they're not forced to. It's also indicated as "more challenging"; so they know what they're getting into.

I don't really buy into the idea that newbies don't stay around because they are given servers which are too hard. The game has been like this forever, but now suddenly it's too hard? I've only seen people complain when they get moved from tier 3 to tier 4.

(It has to stay fun though, so giving them tier 4 servers would indeed be a bad idea. It's hard for me to judge, imo tier 3 is fine for newbies, but if not give them tier 2. Why not? Better too easy than too hard.)

Correct. Steam will at least be able to provide the absolute minimum value so we will be able to have a baseline several months down the road about the actual number of active players. I for one am very interested to see real numbers, but it wont affect me in that I play 2 hrs every night with the same 10 people that play the same 2 hrs every night.

I just know that finding games was really hard in NA, but I didn't play for a while so I don't know about now and I can't wait to fix my shitty PC.

Anyway the reason why the playerbase is getting smaller is because original Q3 players are getting older and quitting, most are 25+, married and have kids now, but sadly getting new blood for a game like Quake is really hard.

When you think about it Quake is one of those niche games. I started playing Q3 in 2000, but not a single one of my friends ever even heard of it. Those noobs only talked about Diablo and Star Craft, if I remember correctly. My high school had around 2500 students but I never ran into one who knew about Quake.

I tried to make some of them to play Q3 with me but they quit after few games. And I think that is pretty much the story of any quaker, most just played vs other quake addicts online while their friends were jerking over RTS games.

So yeah I don't think any changes will ever change that, they should just understand that and try to make their current playerbase happy instead of trying to ruin the game for some new potential players. Let's just hope steam is full of dormant quakers. Jeez, where is Morpheus when you need him.

Anyway, I wish their new update is a big success, because I don't want the only game I'm playing to die for good.

I disagree completely. If the game had groundbreaking graphics and sick deaths then it would hold people's attentions until they discover that there actually is a great game behind the candy.

The fighters could be far more detailed, the limb movement more detailed and natural, the environment more detailed and immersive, the deaths gory and varied.

With cutting edge graphics and a top of the line pc, the FFA matches would be an eye candy fest of flying limbs and guts and creepy immersive environments.

One of the reasons why I even started to play Quake was Graphics, but then again I don't like realistic games so the way Quake looks even now is just fine with me.

If I played MMO then I would maybe care about graphics so I can enjoy the scenary, but when it comes to FPS I don't care about that stuff, I just want to shoot stuff. You know r_picmip 5 is the right way to play Quake.

Not at all. Quake 4 had an emphasis on single player, and that's where the fancy graphics where. But reportedly there were some graphics glitches. The multiplayer looked similar to q3 but it shipped incomplete and buggy and had stupid looking weapons.

Huge graphic is one of the many reasons q4 failed so hard. At the time many peoples weren't able to run it at a decent or even less, stable framerate. The graphic engine was bad optimized and very heavy for the level of graphic it provided compared to the other games around at the time.

A big reason for this is not just because of the learning curve or gfx or so. At least not right now.

Right now if you want an organised TEAM game of quake you need to go on irc and join a pickup game. this in itself is effort enough for a new player.

But once you get to irc and join up these things happen:

U'll get questioned about who you are, because surely u can't honestly be a new player who's interested in the game.

U'll get flamed for aliasing, get flamed for being not as good, get flamed for world hunger basically.

I'm not a new player by any means (and not even bad) but any time i get the urge to actually play a game of ctf again the irc crowd succeeds in driving me away in the blink of an eye. For a community dying for new players it (ironically enough) is a community which chases those very players away

It's no myth. It took me a lot of time to even start to have a clue about what the game is about. Not that I didn't have fun before with colleagues/friends and stuff, but I would get decimated online until I decided to actually learn the game.

Some sources quote that in early 2014 we still had up to 100 unique new players giving the game a first try PER DAY (if you want you can remove the obvious alt accounts which would still mean a decent number of new players daily)

They left and all those accounts show one or two games played, both ending up with no frags and extremely high number of deaths.

I was able to get in contact with few of those (found similar nick on leddit) and asked them what happened and all of them gave me the same answer.

Gave it a try, weren't even aware how to move or how to choose weapons and often got insulted or kicked from the server. They got destroyed bad. And before someone tells me well duuuur, back in 2001 I played with no matchmaking and stats and it worked fine duuuur... yeah, it might, I believe it did, but it is not working now in 2014. That's the problem, times have changed, games have changed, gaming as a whole has changed and if we want people to give the game a shot we need to first and foremost make sure they even attempt to play a second match before leaving the game and never touching it again.

Maybe bringing back the Crash course that let you set up your binds and sensitivity and playing a round with a bot which increases or decreases skill accordingly would help.

The reason why I kept playing wasn't because I adored the ruleset and wonky physics - all newcomers will find them distracting in some way or another because they are either used to something else or not used to FPS gaming at all.

I didn't stick around because the gameplay was great, but even though I wasn't reaching the top of the scoreboards I still had fun games with players around me. If I was playing another game today and started Live in tier 3 I definitely wouldn't bother playing it as much - people would just mess with me and rocket jump in the air while I would try to reach them with the LG beam, unaware that is doesn't do damage on distance. I saw tier 1 and even though the players are practically disabled (most of them cannot use mouse and keyboard at the same time), I would place someone who is completely new to the game either there on in Tier 2.

What's also missing is the elo or elo equivalent - I don't care if it's MS copyrighted, just RANK the players somehow (not using a 3rd party website)

Make rank and Tier more RPG-ish, this is what drives people to improve. Instead of having 4 tiers, how about introducing "levels"?

You start at level 1, as you gain experience you "level up" and your profile updates accordingly.

Tiers would remain the same, but they would be split in let's 40levels. Level 1-5 are Tier 1 players, level 6-15 tier 2, level 16 to 30 tier 3 and levels 30-40 tier 4

This would give people something to aim for, and once you reach a certain level you stop caring about the whole thing since you're now already a certified QL EXPERT PLAYER with that elitist "I don't care about stats" attitude... even though it was the thing that kept you playing.

Seriously there's SO much stuff out there better than LOADOUTS.
Strafing doesn't need fixing, it worked fine, it was just presented in an old fashioned way.

This is what infuriates me the most - instead of patching up a blown tire on a car they decided to replace it with a wooden one, since now the car tire cannot burst.
At the same time they remove the core essence of driving.

Stupid sleepy analogy but you get the drill - strafing wasn't FIXED, it was REPLACED with another model which is "inferior"

Things may have changed but back in 2000 almost everyone sucked at Q3. Hardly anyone was getting over 65fps and half the people were HPB's (meaning 200+). You could join a server full of people and be the best one there after a few weeks of playing. You're remembering it a little wrong I think.

Decimated means entering an FFA server (Q2 at the time) full of seasoned players and always end up on the bottom of the scoreboard. They'd even troll me, like not shooting at me, only kill me with the blaster, lots of discouraging messages, etc. The usual stuff. ;)

quakelive need to get rid of all the evil signs, and make maps that are beautiful environment with trees, rivers and flowers or stuffed the maps with cute stuff or grear art, and they need to change whole theme songs to classical music. definately getting rid of all blood is necessary. they need to change the evil voice with more cute voice. also they can add more cute characters to randomly appear middle of fights. I am catholic so I am about to quit this game because there are too much disgusting evil and devilish signs. it's fun game to play so if they follow my suggestion, the game will become perfect!

They blew it all on botched business models, failed updates and dumbass ideas that got them more bad than good.

Many oldschools left QL in that first phase (2010-11) of great changes, because they felt that the game was dumbed down, cheaters were rampant and support flat out sucked.

The ones that are left are so diehard that you would need a nuke to get them off Quake. But - the majority of the old playerbase left.

Without them its no wonder the community is small. Also no wonder that the newbs get plastered. That's why the devs desperately try to dumb down QL - to prevent newbies from quitting.

But that won't do. You cant make an eagle into a mouse. QL is a specific breed of game. You won't beat over decade of experience that we longtime players have under our belts.

The entire tier system was good in theory but in reality it doesnt work. So they try to make a noob update to save dwindling playerbase...what in turn will cause a lot of veterans to quit. A catch 22.

I wish QL good and will stay onboard till the end but it doesn't look good.

You're right, but that still doesn't make the picture any brighter, in my opinion.

QL needs new blood. How it is going to achieve it, I don't know.

Back in the day there were only a handful of online FPSs. Hell, only Quake and UT mattered for the most part (TF, CS, ET changed all of that but before them it was pretty simple what to play).

The players didn't have all that much choice then. So either you wanted to play good online FPS and had to make due with Quake/Ut, or you had to mill in singleplayer. This FORCED players to get better. there was no other way.

Now we've got enough options for any casual to stand, think and say to himself: "I won't dedicate several years to getting good at Quake. What for? I have BF, COD, etc etc at my disposal. To hell with this".

Quake also is from a different time. It's much like an old Ferrari or Aston Martin - devoid of luxuries, hard to master. Gamers want Bentleys or S-Klasse now. No hard work, all is done for them.

Taking the sociological and psychological reasons/implications of the general "dumbing down" and evolution of FPS gaming aside, QL has nothing to offer for the modern teenager. Graphics? Meh. Gore? no. Guns? There are better and realistic guns in other games. Weird player models? Duh. Soldiers and special forces are what turns teenager on now (when it didnt?). And QL gives them a taste of being destroyed. A great taste that wither forces you to learn or quit. And modern teenagers want to have fun, sweet pics on Facebook, tweet their successes, post funny pics on Tumblr. Theyre not interested in hardcore gaming.

QL will remain a very deep niche then, because it attracts only the ones who know well the adage:

NO PAIN, NO GAIN.

So the developers should market QL as fast paced performance hardcore FPS for real men. That "real men" part might buy them more subscribers eager to prove their manlihood than making QL a gay-ass noob friendly futuristic shooter like warsow :)

QL is not for everyone. Can't you taste the distinct 90's feel about it? Its design principles, graphics, guns, models,etc all are ingrained with 90s flavor. The modern teenagers don't know or don't care about these things but there's quite a lot of them who want to learn the real deal and prove themselves. Some of them are also riding that "90s nostalgia" wave (LOL, so we ARE really THAT old...). So capitalize on them.

Other than that, it's shadows and dust for QL.
