If I were totally new to Quake, after that match I would re-think if I want to play such game. try to find out how is this possibru and then f3'd again.

Usually by having decent aim, camping one/two armors and going for quad when he hears the sound. Good players don't play tier1 games all day long. What can you learn out of this? That you wont get such combat skills in next year or so. Not very encouraging

Most maps in FFA just have a single strategy which if you practice you can get good at, you don't need amazing combat skills. They will come with time, but you can get a lot better really fast just by thinking about the most powerful positions/routes on the map and learning how to fight there. Its fun really, but a lot of people just want to run around aimlessly, which only works if you have really good combat skills.

Tierslummers are usually bad players who have ok execution due to huge amount of time spend in game. I wouldn't advice learning from them.

If tier 3 FFA is too hard for newbies, then match them with tier 2.
That solution is so trivially easy and obvious they would've done that if that was really the problem.

Then try to match to tier 2 and if none available move to tier 3. Still easy.

Tier slummers (or new alt accounts from veterans) are a problem for matchmaking no matter what you do.

In QL when I made new accounts I could see servers that weren't available in my main account, filled with tier1-tier2-tier3 noobs, just by taking 10 seconds to create a new one (not even email check). QL is pretty much tier slummers' and cheaters' paradise, which will be a major concern when launched on steam.

I think i played the game for like a week to a month (not sure) before i even got the clue that there was a tier system and that Tier1 = bad / Tier4 = bad - good...

People need to be informed about this stuff when they join the game, you cant be like "if they get outgamed, get matched with lower tier"...they will think this is the norm and they will drop the game faster than they find out about this stuff.

No kidding, I played a couple games of FFA last night, and it was me, a couple other vets, some mid level guys and like 2 or 3 people who couldn't even change weapons. I don't play much FFA, but this seems to be the case every time. These first time quake players are getting destroyed without knowing what is even happening.

People have pointed this out to id for years, and they have done nothing.

But maybe if they put timers on the items and made bunny hoping easier it will help. It's our fault QL isn't popular anyways since we don't give id enough money. /sarcasm

No new players should be allowed to join FFA at all.

If a player starts his first round ever on FFA he will most likely quit the game before the round is over.

A new player will have no weapons, no knowledge of where to get them while surrounded by enemies with weapons.I bet a good part of players dont understand why enemies survive their machine gun bullets. Machine guns kill enemies in other games.

Release all new players into DOM only then let them graduate to CA and then the rest of the gamemodes.

This will give them
A. Teams, safety in numbers
B. weapons to fight with
C. A good game mode that is at least a little bit similar to prior fps experiences.

I think that ffa is a good place for new players, but they have to be herded together in their own servers and not allowed in the experienced player servers.

When QL goes on Steam, if a bunch of people try the game, this is what should have been done.

But they changed the game, and walled it off from normal Quake, which may actually keep them separate from a lot of upper level people, but not the ones who aren't subscribers. Which according to id is a lot. So really they probably haven't addressed the problem.

My first online round on quakelive was on FFA and I actually won.

But that's mostly because of playing Wolfenstein ET for years prior to that and getting hang of the weapons by praccing few games against the bots.

After a game or two I went to tier4 and things got harder and aim only wasn't enough. I learnt that I must position myself well and keep getting some armors and hp.

I think that helped me to start dueling. Ofc I'm still really lowskilled there but FFA helped me to pick up the basics of quake.

I stopped caring for green servers long ago. I'm well into medium T4 FFA and many green servers are full of people who are tier 3 or less. I have very few FFAs that are even. But I don't play them all that much nowadays - i'm a CTF player by heart. In T4 CTF matchmaking gets wild, too.

It's pretty painful to play a game against noobs because it's no sport. You just run quad, time items and shoot sitting ducks.

The dude in your case just farmed you mercillesly. TBH he didnt even ahve to break a sweat, given how the rest of the server was walking targets. Either you will learn and progress or you will end up being a bottom feeder.

Screw matchmaking. It's a performance game, and hardcore player will always trump casual. Just like in sport.

That only used to chose your entry tier and hasn't been part of the game for 2 or 3 years now.

It's not as big a problem as you're making out. For example go and play BF4 and you'll find limitless hordes of terrible players with 200 score per minute or less, often with scores of 1 kill for 15+ deaths, they are players who struggle to move even when there is nothing beyond the basic WASD/jump/crouch/prone for movement. These people keep playing BF4 despite being absolutely devastated each game by even average players. You know what the only explanation can be? They still enjoy themselves somehow.

If people are having fun playing a game, they don't care about losing. Quake even offers the illusion of a chance at a kill and therefore some degree of success, compared to a game like BF4. In Quake a bad player can fire a few shots at me before dying, even if I surprise them they'll probably panic fire and hit at least something. In BF4 if I see them they're dead, they won't react and I'll kill them before they're even fully aware of what's happening. I would think this is quite frustrating but the game is very popular among bad players, their enjoyment outweighs other factors, enough that they keep playing.

Quake's problem isn't about matching people up against equally skilled opponents, the problem is it doesn't appeal to anyone anymore, they don't want to play it. As much as I appreciate Quake, I also fully understand why the current generation just isn't interested. They didn't grow up with whichever Quake as the big name in FPS gaming, they have no attachment to it, no awareness of it and they have absolutely zero appreciation for it.

Now, bring out a new Quake, that is as groundbreaking in terms of engine/graphics as Quake 3 originally was, with all the modern sense of progression that is expected in games today and then things might be different. What we might see is a new generation of people who, like we did in the past, grow up with a Quake game. As it currently stands QL will always be seen as a game from 15 years in the past, those who grew up with Quake will continue to drift away, only to be replaced by basically nobody.

It might be why they accept it, but I'm still surprised by it because it's just so easy to be killed when you're bad, you die just about instantly even without headshots if your awareness is low. To me that would be very frustrating, but apparently it either isn't or it's just not frustrating enough to put them off.

I agree wholeheartedly with the graphics and effects. But I also think that the game is difficult to pick up at this point/. I think it would be difficult to even get 1 kill your first game in a normal server. In more realistic FPS games you kill someone with a few bullets and there is blood everywhere etc. And in Quakelive when the kill finally happens, so what? There is no fatality or anything to keep them interested. The game has no appeal other than the sick gamneplay, which takes a few months to get in to. For a person just starting out it's just spawn, get raped, spawn get raped, etc. No gore, and barely anything to learn because it happens so fast.

It is difficult to pick up for sure, as a new player you have no sense of progression at all. You'll get killed effortlessly by anyone good, if you do pick up some kills yourself you've not really gained anything, apart from some numbers on a scoreboard and your profile. Compared to BF4 or CoD, all the points you score are significant in terms of unlocking new equipment to try out etc.

That desire to unlock the next gun in whatever category you're playing can be a great motivator for some people. Maybe they're about ready to quit the game but they're close to unlocking "that" gun, they keep playing and gradually getting closer to it, once they have that gun the game is suddenly more enjoyable for them perhaps and they keep going. When you get people to stick around, progressing toward something, keeping them motivated with achievable goals, they might develop a real love of the game and enjoy it long term.

Despite the lack of progression in Quake in terms of ranks or unlocks, I still think if you enjoy the gameplay you'll stick with it, but these things would certainly make it easier for people.

Few days ago I played on some ghetto CS 1.6 server where evey round started with quaky "PREPARE TO FIGHT" :)

The so called elitists have been suggesting DLCs/some kind of unlock system since closed beta. Weapon skins, new models, new announcers, web themes.
The quakers seem to know what they want, its just theyll never have it.

I've always said that Quake 5 is really the only way Quake will get a population again. QL is Q3, which is a 15 year old game at this point. As superior as it is to other FPS games, it's old, it's outdated, and the new generation of players don't care or know about it.

A brand new Quake game with 2014 level graphics, some sexy looking robots/soldiers in a silky cinematic trailer would easily bring in new players. Core gameplay could remain the same. Stick some matchmaking on that bad boy. Market it with tv ads and stuff. 50k tournament at Quakecon. QL pros helping to shape the gameplay to keep competitive players happy.

While you make some good points I can't help but think that you missed one of the biggest differences that Quake has to other games.

I remember talking to someone about this years ago when there were more players and a lot of aliasers. I could always tell who was who just from watching the way they played - movement, dodging, decision making, aiming style etc. Quake allows you play the game in a way that's unique to you and the skill ceiling is much higher than other games.

So when you lose a game in Quake, you aren't 'losing in a video game' from a lucky shot or stupid way, you lose because the opponent was better than you. It hits the ego a lot harder in Quake than it does in other games, at least that's been my experience anyway.

Thats not quake specific at all i remembet playing cs1.6 As an immature 15 yo you just think you are the best and everyones a lucker lots of rage etc. Only later people realize that you have to WORK on your game to beat strong players and get the right mindset.

Now that i think about it i dont see why anyone would keep playing cs or quake as a newcomer however cs has and had a way larger playerbase

The whole point of powerups is "just for fun." Quad drops when you kill the quad carrier and you have a chance of picking it up and killing lots of stuff. Man, you can't please anybody. Nerf everything, it's too hard!

They have a pretty decent matchmaking in CSGO, and all those fancy ladders in other games (like MOBA), so I wonder - why id haven't put any effort in fixing the matchmaking, rather than stupidifying Quake by nerfing many of the good guns that it had - sg, mg, lg, rg... they even managed to fuck up plasma gun somehow, compared to OSP.

The game needs a total rehash and that's the bottom line. HD textures, shit loads of blood and gore, fully delve into the quake characteristics and make it hard as fuck like QW was with gothic and demonic/satanic themes. Add a hint of the original doom 1/2 atmosphere with that old door sound and the monsters too. New players like an atmosphere, and that's what quake needs. QL stripped quake of that. There's a big opportunity to put Quake into UltraHD/4K as the maximum quality now too. Quake deserves a massive production. It's just sad to know it'll never happen.

Quake needs to be known as that deeper FPS that requires true map and item control, movement, positioning and weapon/aim skill. At the moment its just seen as a dirty tramp who was once probably a well-off entrepreneur.

Interactive video tutorials, player video interviews and downloading of demos from player's profiles. A solid identity system that stops people from aliasing and solid matchmaking with a minimum of 10 tiers. It would be fine to make the base gameplay CA or Attack & Defend imo just to get people started.

Remove the console from the game and just have the menu, lock FPS at 150, etc.

The only real thing many would prefer would be locking picmip, subdivs and lodbias but that's too well established now to reverse in QL itself .

WELL ITS TOO LATE NOW

I delayed the update with steam because I don't believe those two work together. The players from quake are unique. Even I stopped playing quakelive for myself I think this was the best.

that wasn't too much of a blowout, tbh. Of course, you never died, but all the other players got some frags on each other. Hell, there's not even a K:D below 0.5.
Also, talk shit about the new update all you want (because a lot of it is horrible shit), but it makes scorelines like this happen less in FFA. Even a seasoned player has a harder time when there are enemies with 125 hp and rocket launchers spawning in front of him all the time, anybody instantly knows when any item spawns etc.. Frags and deaths get distributed more evenly. It makes FFA a bit frustrating for the players who previously got 50:3 K:D and that might be a problem in the long run, but I feel as if the gamemode got more noob-friendly (= less skill based).

Just killed someone in warmup FFA and he ragequit instantly.

Since when is a good score a problem with the game??

Get a good score (comparatively to other players) in FFA and the other players will let you know.
