QL FFA but switched to Duel pretty quickly as I wanted to play the same thing as those pros on IEM.

pro's have to go with the money, and that is where it was, and that's their game / occupation, and it is wonderful to make money out of something your good at and enjoy, bonus.

I wonder if there had been more investment in TDM / CTF or other game types, it would have changed your idea at that time? (then all the pro's players wouldn't just be dedicated to Duel?)

I suppose it's also about spectator sport too, as in duel its pretty easy to see the great stuff going on, perhaps less so in multi-multiplayer games. I think we all need 5 monitors.

Maybe, maybe not. I was in to TF2 and had my background in CS and I see no reason to why I would go for a quake team game over TF2.

I think TF2 is more fun than Quake TDM, so why would I play TDM over TF2? Our opinions are apart, simple as that. I have always been competitive driven in games, so I enjoy CS and TF2 the most with competitive rulesets (5v5 CS and 6v6 ETF2L TF2), not DM.

I'ts not that our opinions are apart, it was just a question. As CS and TF are quite Team popular. I personally love team games in all titles including Quake. So it's just annoying, that for whatever reason the team game doesn't appeal in QL as much. (as for me the more team players the better, then more populated games to play, that's all)

My point was that our opinions are apart about quake team games. You find them appealing and I don't. It's not that they are completely boring, but Duel and FFA is way way waaaaay more fun than quake team modes.

(I don't know if this is progression, but it sure is hard) I perhaps should have added a "poll", "progression", "within each game title" (perhaps not just id/quake either) and what people "currently play most of"!
BUT I didn't really want it to be, one of these, "OMG how many questions". Nice responses by all, and "memory lane is great", way back or recent. (CMSS reminded me of the amount of fun had & humour in the game, since all these annoying changes have been too brain intrusive and focal :))

56k you were blessed, 14.4 now that was fun :) thing is people today, don't realise that with that modem and telephone line thing, we actually had to pay per minute....... my bills omg.... when it came to dual ISDN then that was costly.

I cant remember which ISP i was with but back when I was playing Netquake I could, on a saturday, pay 50p for the entire day. So I used to get up at like 6am or something (when the cheap rate started) and play all day :D I don't think i was allowed to play any other times due to the massive phone bills so I had to make the most of it, haha

What year was that? demon internet was good, pipex and nildram and another one I can't rem. Different carriers performed better sometimes and overseas . I must have missed those bundles with bt & telewest.... I worked all my money into sport, beer, "massive telephone bills", and pc food :)

I think they took the BFG from excessiveplus, but made it so that it did no dmg only knockback. The only thing that could freeze you was the RG. Was played on the hiszy servers if that rings a bell ;).
So it was probably ran on E+ ye.

There was a moment where I tried to get a grip of OverBouncing but I sucked at it.

I'd like a special mention to jjm map and if anyone can tell me what was the name of that gigantic movement map where you had a very big ass vertical room in the end with a big wall that you had to climb through mostly haste+quad+plasma climb, that'd be neat, I can't remember it :'(.

I began playing at the release of Q3. After a couple of Q3 duels i was introduced to IRC, after that it was osp tdm all the way. After fragging a couple of hundred thousend green robots deatmatch didn't feel very satisfying to me. I quit tdm and played osp ctf instead. I left Q3 when everyone moved on to q3CPMA and Q4. In 2011 I came back to play ql - would have come sooner if i still hanged on qnet and could have asked for a beta invite.

Before that i only played some qw ffa at a friends house - i also played the shit out of doom2, quake and quake 2 single player,

How was the dreamcast version of q3? I heard it had new maps and some new game modes.

it was fantastic, i started on the pad hehe, it was a great little community, we had the house of decay re-skinned and re-named to blue monday or something and, we had hidden fortress as a dc only map.

First Quake title ever. While I don't regret playing UT all those years I'm a bit shocked I never realized how good the quake series was. I just wish I had come a little sooner since TDM is nonexistent in N.A. aside from the occasional pick up game.

I'm sad to announce the new road rash game is in public alfa. It goes by the name of Road Redemption. Not sure how good it will be but judging by gameplay footage it looks a lot slower and will probably rely on gimmicks. I doubt they will have any good art or video footage stuff like the old one.

Well, I'm a traitor to them more since I left it for quake haha. My friends played it, I wasn't really interested at all in games, but gave it a try and then moved over to quake. In Quake 4, my first time playing was a duel, wasn't for me at that point :D went over to FFA and kept playing that for a while. In Warsow it was FFA / Ca / duel and bomb. Quake 3 / live Defrag / FFA / duel / ca

Many ppl who are with FPSs since their beginning started with deathmatch. It was de facto the first multiplayer gametype to be conceived in FPS.

Everything evolved from deathmatch.
I also usually laugh at people who say that FFA is shit. Well, 16-man CTF is shit too. The more players the less strategy and more spawnluck in general. Small FFA (4-6) requires lots of thinking and planning. And if it's FFA against players with the same level as you it becomes all the more challenging.

definitely. for FFA there is a shift in the strategy with 4-6, even at a slower pace, still intense, but more calculated.

i played some doom2 lan and had quake 3 on a mac, but i sucked really bad and played with arrow keys(doom2) or trackpad (q3a).

got serious with QL and played FFA until about 30k frags. then CA.

Played the shit out of Rocket Arena 3 for ages. When QL came out, I naturally went into CA first but then moved on to CTF :)

Actually I played this on an IBM XT (http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=260).
It had some strange never to be heard of operating system on it as well..... Which most closely is resembled by old bios option menu's.
But heck even I was young once.... So I don't really remember all the specifics.
But it could run stunts at 3FPS ;) and it ran Off Road just fine (aka playable).

got tired of 1.6 cause ppl were shooting me through 68 meters of wall, so ive bought source. source was pretty awsome, then came the retarded orange box engine update.
started playing ql cause somebody gave me a beta key. i got addicted to instagib, and was playing insta ffa for half a year straight.
then they implemented the "new" netcode in 1.0, ive thrown out my pentium4 eventually, and started playing tf2 isntead more and more.

tried warsow bomb, but "its dead jim", and nobody uses comms on pickup.
tried ql tdm pickup, but it seriously makes my brain tired (sneaking for weapons, counting items, shooting ppl). big respect for pro ql players.
tried some ut99 insta ctf pickups recently, terrible movement terrible crosshairs, awsome netcode and maps, and good pickup community.
tried some bf3/4, excellent game, but its pointless to play alone
i was so confused once, ive bought codbo2. everyone was retarded. its impossible to go under 1.0 kdr. even tried esl gather for it, but they called me a retard for not attacking out as a defender in s&d.

It all began with coop duke nukem 3d on his dads lan. We played it for hours before realizing chasing one another with shotgun was way more hilarious than killing space pigs. Then we moved on to doom death match and eventually unreal and quake. We never got sick of it. Then with half-life, counter strike became our go to, although I continued with quake on the side at home.

Till this day I cannot walk across an open area in real life without seeing all the best spots for a sniper.

First multiplayer experience was I believe Blood (which is a game based on the Build engine, same as Duke3D) at a friend's house at his home LAN setup (a novelty back then).

I also visited a high school with IT focus at the time, and in IT class I would set up Duke3D LAN games. The screens were facing away from the teacher. We would get away with playing a lot of the time. That's the only time at high school that I remember that wasn't a complete waste.

First online experience was Unreal (NOT Unreal Tournament), playing with 14,4, then 56k modem, with horrible pings. Still great fun.

Shortly after that it went serious with the first Q3Test, which a friend from school who used to play Q2 recommended to me. I still remember my first game. Still on dialup modem. It was on dm7. I tested all the weapons, and everything, plasma, rail, especially rockets, just felt so right, so accurate, so immediate from the beginning. I never looked back, and never played any other multiplayer game online from that point on.

q2 as a kid with a shitty modem connection, then q3, osp.. and i got hooked trying to become good. by the time i got a competitive internet connection the scene was dead, no more lans beside the impossible to get to eswcs. after that, esports as a whole became a joke.

Started with Mario bro’s and duck hunt. I wasn’t old enough to play but I held a unplugged controller and pretended I was the character running around. Was tough man. My babysitter wouldn’t let me just play she had to kiss me and make me smell her stinky breath.

Blood 3v3, sometimes 4v4 CTF on LAN. The best team based experiences ever.

I had just stopped playing MK3 and very much into WarCraft 2 (waiting for StarCraft) at the time but a few of my friends insisted that playing shooters with other people is fun. I was very impressed with Wolf3D when it came out but couldn't get into Doom/2. Still can't stand them to this day.
