If you want to play QL on Steam, you will have to link a QL account (new or old) to your steam account. One. Forever (unless they offer a way to "unlink" eventually). And you won't be able to use that account with the old launcher.

That would be really shitty for LANs if true. Especially since steam accounts are worth something.

The risk of getting key logged is fairly low, but there's still sketchy internet cafes and probably insecure networks at lans. People will also log onto their email for steam guard if they don't use their phone.

It also kind of sucks for the people maintaining any tournament PCs to have two installs of the game.

The risk of getting key logged is no less with the QL launcher. It just would mean only your QL account was at risk as long as you used unique details for it.

Ooooooo and as I've mentioned several times previously, we were launching a new gaming community at one stage a couple of years ago and basically all we needed from Stinkerror was an email and a couple of accounts to run servers. We didn't even get the email.

well that seems quite silly, but also, ID's fault for not implementing a proper cheat system. So many I have seen with the LG and rail that have said they are not hacking, nor ID spotted the majority of these under radar hacks. But 17 years of watching hackers online, sorta helps me a little. I put up with it, and let them enjoy it, until it becomes too obvious and overpowering and they are then caught anyway.

(I have watched people same ping, same movement, same everything come in as different names, and newbie accounts, joining for a few rounds, testing, stopping, testing stopping, aiming like a bitch, with RG and LG. Then returning again, to use a lower acc setting, aiming like a pro on E. Then return again to trial it again, to get an ACC which is not too over the radar. And ID think they have no hacking problems?)

And others say they were not hacking when its so blatantly obvious that their system is flawed. Until a demo is submitted and truly scrutinised. (sometimes that even fails) gah!! So I feel for you diabz, "if that's all true what you say!" I hope you get a second chance, as you have done some good stuff, zeroQL should also for that matter.. That was another loss. I don't like cheaters, at all, it's just sad that people cant get the fun factor and confidence boost out of the game, and that the only way not to get demotivated and full of hate, is to do the winning a frag fight thing.

It's ID's system that should be the one that has the most experience in preventing this shit.

What the fuck are you talking about? I didn't campaign against loadouts or any of the changes except the decision made in complete buffoonery to employ a paid voice actor to update the announcer voice.

I've been playing since 1999. I have competed in hundreds of tournaments, starting back in 2002. I have played thousands of hours of Q3 and QL.

12 months ago I download a hack and use it in private server with friends to reproduce the aim of a known hacker who has been hacking in competition.

I'm encouraged to hack against the hacker so do and win convincingly.

I've never deployed the hack in game ever again, although I did stream a hacker with the hacks on to show his hacking (he since disappeared LOL).

I get permabanned for the above.

a) not being able to force ql to run on just one core (now ql is useless at 60-70fps)
b) not being able to use wine+extraql on linux (now i need a seperate wine steam and bye-bye to userscripts which made ql somewhat playable in the past).

ah true, it's different with gnome. i do set xset m 1 1 for wine aswell, but i don't get the same mouse input as before with the linux client (far from it tbh).

The nvidia drivers run great for me, just like the Windows ones, never really a problem. It overall feels like there's less latency than on Windows, things feel more "fresh" or something.

The only shitty part is that there's no native client for QL anymore... but when using one of the kernel packages set up for low-latency desktop use, then running QL in wine and following the recommendations on the wineHQ website, it actually feels so good I'm honestly not quite sure what's better, QL+Windows or QL+wine+Linux (though audio quality is bad but you'll still hear all footsteps and shit).

I can't really recommend using Linux generally, but for everyone that feels at home on Unix-like systems because of experience with it at work, using Linux at home really can be pretty good. There's not really more problems than on Windows.

you must have done something very very wrong to experience a unstable and freezing linux, thats actually one of the reasons why people use linux over windows.
slow graphics experience sound like you didnt install the gpu drivers, the stock kernel drivers are ok stable & fluid in 2d but if you want full 3d performance just install the proprietarys. (especially true for nvidia where the stock driver is meh and nvidias own awesome)

I never tried any Linux on modern system but things like resising windows always were slow in my experience where in MSWindows I can swipe the mouse as fast as I can and everything can keep up with cursor.

Software is buggy and bloated, lots of the time when I install games using it they dont work or need reinstalling, I dont like having to log into it to play a game, it constantly needs updating. Its just annoying.

I will use it though if I can get a game on the cheap, I'd just rather not.

Hell most of the time I try to turn steam on it doesnt work for ages and I have to kill the process and try again. Lots of the time it doesnt log me in with the same info I have had for many years until I try for 15 times.

I had problems with Steam for the first few years, uninstalled and didn't use for nearly a decade. Although when I reinstalled it a few years ago and since, I haven't had any problems.

I'm still trying to avoid it. Just last night I wanted to play Dark Souls that I only have on steam because it was on sale. I couldnt log in for 30 minutes just repeatedly trying my same log in details until eventually it let me in but by that time it was midnight and I had to be up for work.

Or you finally made the same mistake while typing your password that you did originally and so it let you in? Well it's juts a suggestion but try changing passwords to something very silly like aaaaaaaa, see if it works correctly, then change back to a good password.

No mistake. I never changed what I had typed into the box. I just kept retrying the same thing until it worked.

As someone else stated above, if you are a regular steam user you'll probably have an extended buddy list and each time you login to QL all of them will see you playing QL and they're one click away from installing it.

Yeah, this seems a little strange. I am assuming, QL will eventually ditch the stand-alone. Why have two launchers? Anyway, if you are not a huge troll, you can do what I did. You are allowed 2 accounts at any given time. I made a steam only account. Even if you already have 2 accounts, I'm sure QL will probably not ban you for creating a third new account for linking to steam...although if you have two accounts already why wouldn't you just use one of them? Anyway, the steam link thing is weird, and I guess we are moving to steam only here if things 'go as planned'. It will pressure users to sub and prevent shotgun alt'ing as your account will be linked to your SteamID.

No, again, as far as quakelive is concerned, nothing has changed. It's a steam thing, whereby steam can associate a steam ID to your QL account. It's purpose doesn't really make any sense, unless the stand-alone is going away in the near future. This would theoretically push subs and prevent alt spam. Nothing migrates from a current stand-alone install. You need to save your config and put it into your steam QL directory and exec it again in game.
