Every community that I've ever been a part of as at some point compared whatever is they do to chess, fuck chess.

The comparision isnt between chess and quake, read again please and think a bit.

He's saying that he'd rather play quake be it dated because of the skills required to be competent at it, compared to COD (as an example) as it's all shiny eye candy, fucked netcode and a rather skillfree fps game.

It's 2014, the biggest selling game in history is Minecraft. You don't have to emphasize game play over eye candy. If you do, then they're not the type of people you want to be playing with anyway.

Now comparing quake to minecraft? I don't think you've got the slightest clue as to how to compare things.

You've clearly never understood chess and the lessons you can extract from the beautiful game.

Chess strategies are way more complicated. Saying you can learn lessons from chess and apply it to other areas of life is true. Making a direct comparison between quake and chess as games is ridiculous.

When most people compare something with chess it'll be a direct emphasis on certain aspects of the game you can pull from it, like timing for example, in chess a while timed attack could make or break a win, like in quake when you give up a few frags to try and get control again, the same would be said at high level chess where someone would sacrifice a bit of material to gain a positional advantage. It's not that difficult really.

We're discussing two different aspects of a single topic and expecting to get somewhere. Xoji implied that Quake is not "like chess". Then, you proposed that one can learn lessons from chess and supposedly apply them to Quake. I agree, and I'm sure many others would as well, but you addressed something that did not exist in his post.

The point is that, in chess, gameplay is turn-based and skill completely relies on cognition, thus requiring players to think 10, 20, 30+ moves ahead. In Quake, however, gameplay is real-time and skill relies heavily on dexterity and reflexes, thus more slack is given to poor planning because one can fight their way out of bad situations.

As games, they are very, very different. I understand your comparisons, but they are superficial, simplified, and vague. No offense. That's just a limitation of comparing fundamentally different games.

Regardless if it's turn based or real time as you call it, it'll still have the same foundation. Often times in quake you'll have to think ahead of your enemy and do things out of the norm like in chess. You've just further turned this into a chalk and cheese debate, but I can appreciate your reply and answers from a more technical point of view.

There is no debate though. Chess and Quake are not comparable beyond superficiality due to their vas deferens... I mean, their vast differences. Like you said, "in quake you'll have to think ahead of your enemy and do things out of the norm like in chess".

Thousands of other activities involve that same dynamic. This basic similarity does not warrant a significant/deep comparison. I understand, however, that very general skills can be transferred between chess and Quake (moreso the former to the latter, imho).
