Just checked, I was right. As if anybody would in 2014 START playing Q3A, QL is already pretty stretching the limits of what people want to play.

Tbh telling people not to give money to id software is the correct thing to do as a responsible consumer at this point (play as much as you want, but don't make them get profit from it). When it comes to QL, they're are largely incompetent and should NOT be able to survive with their current performance. QL being shut down would also of course be the best thing to happen for Reflex & Co. where actual good developers are working.

What is it you want more, for ID to suffer or Quake to prosper?

There's tons of alternatives out there, including Q3 itself.

Using your logic we should have supported shootmania, quake4, doom3, etc.

id did it to themselves. Carmack and co left id because they saw it as a sinking ship and they were smart enough to bail before it was too late.

What I want is an Arena shooter where
1. the gameplay isn't stupid (this excludes most things tbh, especially everything with Unreal in the name)
2. there's an actual playerbase (this narrows the few available games even further down to pretty much QL only)
3. I pay the dev some money and can still go to bed without feeling guilty (i.e. non-pro QL, cause in that case I don't give them money at all)

(I'd like to note that I still feel bad for playing QL even without paying)

I think what sync sponge and co. have been(or have NOT been) doing has been the most damaging so far

'sides, what are you trying to say here exactly, that steam players should try the game for themselves and realize there are big issues there's no proper anticheat or matchmaking and so on? :D

In 6 years id has:

1. Not listened to the community
2. Provided zero protection for newcomers (and only now that they realize the damage that has caused, now they want to reverse it; too little too late)
3. Spent all their time providing the community with disabled cvars instead of actually developing the game so it doesn't look 15 years old (still).
4. Did nothing to promote Quake Live (ther'es plenty of ways to do it for free, so don't give me the they don't have money excuse)
5. Allowed cheaters to destroy several gametypes. Nevermind an anticheat system, how about cracking down on known offenders. No, they chose not to, instead they chose to unban guys like zeroql who was guilty of spreading cheats to others who are probably still cheating in quake live today.
6. Catered to specific people who were instrumental in demolishing newbies in certain game modes, specifcially TDM and CTF. Those same people are the very reason why newcomers to Steam's new QL platform will quit within 3 hours of playing their first game.

They never learned after 6 years. Nothing changed. They just got more arrogant and even started deciding on things without any community support, nor focus group tests.

The writing is on the wall. They can only blame themselves at this point.

The community is simply tired and had enough of their bs. QL will fail on steam, with or without any dissent. It's simply not new age enough to stand alone in 2014. It's a nostalgic game that has had its time.
