zenimax/bethesda have no idea what they're doing - how to deliver quake to a modern audience
They can update the game to idtech5... they have their engine, programmers, other necessary resources, they see there's interest in the game (subscription model working for a 1999 graphics game)... and they don't do it.

"Updating" the game to id tech 4, 5 or 6 would be no different from making a whole new game so don't expect that. Maybe there will be a Quake 5 after Doom. I think Rage 2 is more likely though, unless QL really does VERY well on Steam (much better than now).

There's interest from some devs (mostly indies) in making an Arena Shooter but the interest from the public yet has to be proven. If the market responds by buying massively one of these incoming titles, bigger companies may hop on the bandwagon and go farther than the "military shooters with a little arena fps style" that seems to be a new trend.

I also reject your weather forecaster analogy, as they are relaying a prediction based on an analysis of collected data interpreted through the current scientific understanding. In other words it is objective and they have a have a fucking recipe.

In his case he has to relay his impressions and understanding and mostly contrast it to prior experience with other games and the industry in general. It is fairly more subjective and although it is nice that he mostly knows what he is talking about, I will deem you a hypocrite if suggesting that anyone is required to be an expert on a subject or possess absolute knowledge in order to convey their thoughts.

It really doesn't sound like are too familiar with his channel to be honest. A large amount of the games he review is by first impression. Most of them is with just a few hours of playtime if even that much. He has of course prepared the necessary video settings in order to be able to showcase the game. However that is not the amount time investment you are suggesting at all.

All this however is beside any valid point to the original statement I made. If you go back and read carefully, I write as a response that he could have compressed the review "if he had prepared it beforehand", which is a reference to matter of him playing the game while talking. If he had PREPARED a gameplay video BEFOREHAND and then done a PREPARED speech read out loud as voiceover, it could have been done much quicker as J3ck asks for. That is obviously not how this review was conducted though.

That may be the case in some instances, but, when I posted this I had the ability to comment(and I still do, after checking). Plus, there's no 'comments disabled' message like other vids that you can't comment on, as well as the Comment box where you type in is still there.

He won't let people comment on Youtube anymore for two reasons, back then when he could see better the comments on his videos he would respond, sadly there are many thick heads and trolls, also people who criticize without really... criticizing ("you suck balls so i no like u fu" very smart isn't it), the problem is that TB can't take that kind of criticism and he's very serious when he says "what's your opinion", at least he used to now it's like "this is what I think anyway" [iirc], he also had a bad time dealing with all the "fame" if he notices something he didn't like => he has to respond. He always takes the bait... Then not long time after Youtube updated again, and their idea to merge G+ together wasn't appealing for many big Youtubers/vloggers he was one of them who publicly expressed his opinion, and then he said fuck it he's gonna disable it if people want to really comment then go on his subreddit, you don't see many comments obviously there, but there are exceptions depending on the videos (so the game he's talking about).

If I'm not wrong these are the two main reasons why he disabled the comments.

If they wanted to give new spawns a better fighting chance they could have done so with things that were already in the game to begin with. Give plasma and shotgun instead of only machinegun for example. Or increase spawn protection. Or give more health and armor. All avenues that would not break the game the way loadouts break the game.

Or if they really really wanted these loadouts: put them in a separate game mode, don't force them on everybody and split the already small playerbase and risk 'classic' Quake slowly dying out.

Or if they wanted an "easy mode", well the game already had an "easy mode" as far as I'm concerned called Clan Arena. Or "casual" modes like Freeze Tag and others. But they didn't introduce a new game mode; they forced a new ruleset as the default. They basically created a mod and made that standard.

Btw; even the best FFA players get fragged non stop when they're winning, even in duel games between top players you see blowouts. That is just the nature of the game. You either like that or you don't. And if you don't like that sorry but then maybe this game is not for you.

Yes it has a high skill ceiling but that's what makes a good game. That is why chess is played by millions of people, because you can learn to play it in 5 minutes but also spend a lifetime trying to master it and still suck. This is not for everybody. Some people just prefer to play Angry Birds.

FFA has always been a bit spammy, but with loadouts and global ammo boxes every game mode turns into a zero strategy spamfest. Spawn, hold down fire until fragged, spawn, hold down fire, spawn, hold down fire, etc. For a newcomer this might still be fun. But only for a short time I fear. And then it becomes boring. A lot of these game reviewers play the game for an hour and are entertained. But the game needs players who play this a lot more than that.

Most AAA titles have pretty dumb gameplay. They're popular for other reasons than just the gameplay. Quake on the other hand is all about the gameplay. So I'm not too convinced all these newcomers will stick around for very long. Time will tell I guess.

So were the big changes needed? No because there were better ways of dealing with weak spawns (if that was needed anyway). On top of that I fear they make the game more boring in the long run and might drive away players from before the update if classic mode dies out. If the danger was that QuakeLive might be discontinued because there were not enough subscribers I think that danger is still there.

But time will tell. Maybe I'm overestimating the intelligence of what counts as the average gamer these days.

But at the heart of the matter is probably the fact that Quake is not a game for the masses.
The games, movies or music that are most popular these days are the ones that cater to the lowest common denominator. And Quake simply does not fit into that demographic because it requires too much skill and practice to get good at. You can't fix something like that. You could only do that by making so many changes that you end up with a different game. You want a game that's super popular? Make a new game.

They should focus more on other ways to increase the playerbase and make the game sustainable. Messing with the game itself is not it. Yes I say this because I love Quake the way it was and want it to survive that way, but also because you can't turn Quake into the most popular game no matter what you do anyway and what they are doing now is only leading to a worse experience for everybody, at least imo.

I read it and partially agree with you, but instead of how could it have been done, I could tell you what's totally not done and keep it white noise.

You mentioned Clan Arena as a casual game mode, that's true, but until a certain point. Let me elaborate, I always thought the tier system would work with more players, but it's not the case. The influx of completely green players is so immense, that what I see in the public servers between the previous average Quake players is a kick-fest, were kicking new and low tier players like never before, sometimes I loose count (up to like 10 players kicked in a match). When asked nicely most of them don't know how to write anything in chat, do not react like inert vegetables and they somehow wind up between veterans with 1.5k+ games. It's best if they are kicked, if not they are insulted, blamed and shamed. I find it increasingly difficult to get a balanced match in Clan Arena, casual mode or not, I want to play with equally skilled players and compete in some form, and this fucking MEAT that comes from STEAM is very annoying in that regard.

Fucking matchmaking, now I am completely certain that in long term the game is not sustainable without some kind of more accurate form of it than this shitty tier system.

What you describe is a matchmaking problem.
I mentioned CA as an "easy mode" because you spawn with a truckload of health and armor, have all weapons, no self damage, no team damage, no items etc. Of course you can still play it competitively and skill matters, but I think most will agree that for pure competitiveness classic TDM, CTF or duel sets the bar a bit higher. (So weird having to call it "classic" now.)

Irrelevant of what's the game-type, really. I just pointed out the situation in public servers even at the considerably most casual game mode. Automatic and inevitable tier slumming is commenced by newer players, because they are clueless of what that server tagged "difficult" means... that is if they noticed that at all, or maybe the "play now" button just throws them randomly around, difficult to tell.

It's a fucking mess out there, I don't see the population of new players lasting long in such an environment. When I will get back in to the game, the kicking and raping of new players will continue, because that's the only way I can have a decent match as a non-subscriber. As an example, yesterday I click fucking green Clan Arena server and inside there is a player with 0659 elo, yes 0 in front. I've never seen anything like that and was like... what the fuck is that thing?

It's actually best if they are not insulted, blamed or shamed; kicking sounds like a treatment for a symptom (bullying) rather than a cure for a disease (immaturity combined with a less-than-optimal match making system). Bullying, what is this knight in white shining armor bullshit? Why should I spend my time caring for them? If I would in current situation, I would be doing nothing but that. Once you start kicking, they seem to be unlimited, they just keep coming and never end. Why are they in T4 servers? Why do they end up between veterans? Why aren't in their own tier learning at their own pace between players equal to their own skill? Why should I be the one to sort them out and direct them to their appropriate game environment, why should I waste my time on this if I just want to enjoy somewhat balanced Quake matches upon arriving home from a long day? Not my fucking problem.

These players that wind up in T4 servers, they are equivalent to the most trivial vegetables, didn't you read? Most of them don't know how to chat, how am I supposed to communicate with them at all? Most of them don't strafe, nor jump, nor switch a weapon, they cannot be reasoned with, and if they aren't mute, just by pointing out that they aren't in their tier gets them insulted and gets them thinking and ultimately wasting my time.

If only we had proper matchmaking, at least this current tier shit functioning, because now it is not. There could be 20k players and there would be the same situation with present system.

yea, but it's totally inaccessible for pub play(there was no TDM at all for pub, and that says it all for a mode which actually should be one of the foundations of any FPS-MP game).

I live in NA and no one played tdm before steam. no one. wasteland. the best you could do was pickups, those were really rare or with the same 20 people.

now that loadouts are in, tdm is 100% different and just flat out lame. I have no fun spawning with three weapons, tdm hasn't had loadouts in any form in any arena fps game for 15+ years

that's my opinion yes. I said, and emphasized heavily on, public. That's the keyword. Camping ctf already geared up, or tdm-cod, on public servers are a joke and an even bigger spamfest than lower skill ca ever was.

awareness is MUCH less required now in tdm and ctf cod styles, than ca now, is what i mean by hardcore. Ca round start 4v4 requires lots of awareness to be successful than spam modes now does.

The critical question about being a "hardcore" mode is: Where does a complete newbie have a more pleasant first experience?

In CA, where he gets destroyed 3 seconds after spawning and has to wait 20 seconds until he gets to play again, just to be destroyed very quickly yet again? Where he never gets any kills because everyone he meets has 200/200?

Or in FFA, where he gets repeated spawns with the same weapon and learns how to use it? And where he is bound to get some kills because he will regularly hit people with barely any health?

To me, it seems pretty obvious that CA is a much more unpleasant experience and thus the more "hardcore" mode which shouldn't be forced onto a newbie.

Good video. Nice to hear some perspective from a casual noob player. I myself am a CA sh1tty and have been for years. I don't mind the changes cause I just start a classic .ca server and everything is normals asside from the lowered LG dmg. No problem. It's still good ol quake. I just wish elite players would calm their jets and stop ruining everyone else's fun. They make ca servers so serious when really it shouldn't be. Make you're own private server for serious matches. I prefer letting anyone in and use bigger maps for good ol fashioned 8vs8. Screw playing the same maps over again 4vs4. Elitism is the reason this game suffered population for so long.

When I first started Q3 I mainly dueled on stupid non-duel maps with other noobs. The game was fairly interesting, but I probably would have quit. When I found RA3 everything changed. I spawned with all weapons, it had pretty awesome music in the background, the maps were interesting and well designed. The arenas were large, so I didn't get spammed so much. I felt like I had a fighting chance, and I learned a lot more about the games dynamics due to this. Having the freedom to experiment, to run and jump, to rocket jump etc without taking damage.

Basically RA3 made Q3 noob friendly, it made it fun and enjoyable. I think this is what ID are trying to do for the Steam players. But to be honest, thinking back to my noob days - would I prefer these game modes over RA3? No way, RA3 had communities on servers. Arenas where different friends were doing different things. You didn't need to leave a server to enjoy different stuff. You could say_world 'oi bob come to the big CA arena I need help!' etc etc. Man thinking back, it was so much more fun than what we have now, which is just play CA on dm6 24/7. Man this game has nothing on the Q3 I enjoyed in 2000.

Agreed, i especially miss the atmosphere of the game itself. Was dark and gloomy. QL feels nothing like original quake games. There's no horror or suspense. I'm surprised they haven't taken out some of the demonic statues yet. Sad to see ql become so parent friendly.
