It looks pretty uneventful in my opinion. I will play it and I have bought beta access, but thats because I love this genre and will give any arena fps a fair try.

But its not looking good. Weapons look spammy, dodge movement looks boring, lots of focus on vehicles.

Its no way near the top when it comes to arena fps games I am excited for.

They are vastly ahead reflex though and if they decide to do a kickstarter, they will rack up a million instead of zero.

But aside that (correct) trolling, I think both should be released. Reborn is one of the prime alternatives for a QL successor, that is being the main competitive 'arena' FPS, while reflex is the continuation cpm deserves. Also both are kind of community made from the very beginning, quite nice.


Personally my hopes on the future of arena fps are on doom4 (here on esr) and on the new UT (for noobs) :P. Those two games are most likely going to be released in 2015, are established franchises and are backed up by actual companies, so at least be know for sure that they will be nice platforms for mods and that people will play them.

With that said, reborn still is a big mystery, so can't have realistic hopes on it as of now, and reflex won't be fully released before 2017 and I just don't see it becoming even 10% of QL, which is nothing.

Might as well say that Reflex certainly won't be the successor of QL nor part of the bright future of arena fps. It will be just a niche like cpm, with maybe 17 more players (twice), no matter if the game turns out to be really nice.

How are they vastly ahead of Reflex? Reflex seems to have a pretty playable game up (albeit using cpma gameplay for now) and running on what looks like a solid engine. Also their map editor seems to be better at moment.

As you said, reflex right now is practically cpm gameplay, which is both a placeholder and the future basis of the game. Anyone that has played cpm and that understands it knows that.
The client is available to select individuals, it has one basic unique map and there's no funding as of now.

On the other hand, reborn has its own unique gameplay already, new maps already on the works, the client has been publicly available for quite a while, yes it has been always been struggling for funding but still has some (unlike reflex) and in the end it's been on the works for years by now, including ideas and artwork, slowly but surely. At least has two almost full time experienced devs: 2gd and the secret coder.

Lets put a concrete example: if reborn goes into kickstarter it will have a way better website than reflex's, because the game is in a more completed state and its focus from day one was to get investors, which means planning and presenting an already made unique core.

All that doesn't necessarily mean reborn will be a better game than reflex, nor that reborn will ever be released in first place. Right now reflex's release is more of a certainty than reborn's, because the reflex dev said they are making the game anyway if this first kickstarter fails (which almost certainly will), plus they do look more trustworthy and open than 2gd :P

The only problem with that logic is that Reflex is going to be the exact same way, or worse. The deadlines for reflex are longer than reborn's.

Pretty impressive at first (I was expecting to see another shitty warsow clone-clone-clone and was already looking for a sleep-themed gif), and I was intrigued by the "no bullshit" stuff they kept mentioning, but I completely lost interest after I read "dodge and double jump" (according to their motto, shouldn't it have been "NO double jump"?). Movement looks UT-style clunky and weapons seem a bit meh. I would just love to run through those environments with QL movement.

Still, it could attract a significant amount of players if they do their shit right and I will probably be tempted to at least try the demo because it's very aesthetically pleasing.

I agree, but it should come out much sooner then UT4, atleast Beta will in Q4 2014, and im sure UT4 wont come till the end of 2015, maybe early 2016, so till then there will be an empty space without any new ARENA fps games, so it might get more attention.

Vehicles are a choice! Its just to bring some attention from wider audience, from those who arent so into real ol' school Arena fps and are more of CoD or BF type of people from newer age of FPS. I dont believe that real Arena FPS can last longer then 1 year these days, because it is not what you can sell today easily. Sadly you have to adapt to the lame environment we have to actually earn some penny.

The game looks just 'good,' but not great.

It might be harsh as it looks like a lot of work has gone into the game, but let me explain why I feel that way after watching the trailers:

Firstly, the combat doesn't look as skillful as Quake, it seems very one dimensional. Lots of fighting on level ground, seems like mostly just two people standing in front of each other on level ground, not much dodging/movement/aiming meta game going on. Whereas with Quake there is so much depth to a single RL vs RL fight it's hard to explain in a few sentences.

Second, I've never been a fan of the UT movement system. It's so stop/start and you can never seem to get any speed up. Quake has such a high skill cap that 99% of the players never reach the pinnacle, you could argue that even the top 4 players in the world haven't reached the skill cap because they still make mistakes in all of their games and could have aimed/dodged/positioned better. This game doesn't seem like skill cap is as high as Quake.

It looks a shitload better than what's out there are the moment though. A metric fucktonne better than COD, BF4, etc. I think I could have some fun in the game but it will never replace Quake.

I agree. On a general scale of FPS games Toxikk looks better than 95% of them. But when compared with arena FPS games, it doesnt look like it compares to current major titles or upcoming major titles.

You cant expect to get a game which is good as Quake, since Games like quake wouldnt sell much (unfortunately) because it searches for too much skill for an average person, but im willing to try this one out and i know and i am aware there's no game like quake and there wont be.But this is what we have and you can either take it or leave it, Arena fps is dead and we dont have options like people who are playing CoD and BF.
