Steam
+ It's on steam. There are people who consider this a good thing.
+ Steam overlay with friend system (apparently has VoIP) and whatnot.
+ I'm not sure cause I haven't actually switched yet, but the launcher is gone and the game will automatically start the browser
- It's on steam, i.e. factually DRM. Doesn't really matter for a MP shooter.
- Not much point in steam's friend system when there's basically no interactivity (can't comfortably invite other people) and QL has its own
- You'll need to launch steam for playing QL, and for me, this takes longer than with standalone. -> longer load time
- I'm really not sure, but I assume steam puts the game files in different folders, and the switch will require you to move your cfg etc. from baseq3 to wherever it puts them. Extraql might require some additional setting up.
I think source games allow their players to invite friends directly into the player's server and the invited person can see server details without having the game open. Accept invite -> game starts and autoconnects. Handy stuff like that.
steam seamlessly installs, I'd recommend installing it. no impact problems here, and friends you can still communicate with QL friends and Steam friends.
The servers are same, regardless of which you use, Steam or standalone. Both groups are not separated, they are in one "pool". Thus, choosing Steam as launching method over standalone doesn't have advantage of "More players". You'll have "More players" even if you keep using standalone.
I meam that.
It depends on what you mean. If you include the launcher's md5 checksum of every file in your QL installation, then Steam is much faster. If you include launching Steam itself first, it may be slower. Maybe.
I linked my account with steam because I wanted to buy pro with the left over money on my steam but apparently you can't do that.. They should really make that possible
You can actually, I had 5 euros on my steam wallet and put on another 30 so I could buy pro which worked fine. As long as you have enough money on your wallet you can do that without creditcard.
You can also edit the html: right click, inspect element on the 'add funds' button and change the 1000 in 'javascript :submitAddFunds( 1000 );' to the amount of cents you want to add (minimum 500). For example, 28 euros: 'javascript :submitAddFunds( 2800 );' I am pretty sure its the same for dollarcents/pennies as well, just test it you will get a confirmation screen afterwards anyway.
