Meh, I've played him before, we are around the same skill level, and his problems are mainly positional and tactical.

Every fight he takes, he makes it hard for himself. Good players, as you should know, will try to put themselves in a position where finishing off someone is easy, or the odds are in their favor.

Also, I'm not great at aim, but I notice my LG and RG stats improve a lot if I am in positions to deal easy damage. Also, my overall aim improves by a lot if I am in control, in position and relaxed during a fight.

It's fucking easy to hit rockets and get a kill when you trap someone in a hallway and you have double their stack and they don't have the right weapon.

Apart form the timing and tactics, there are 3 other major skills that differ a lot and have a very high ceiling: aim, speed and dodging. Just being better or worse in anyone of these could translate to rape.

The point is that you need to improve in all aspects. Being good in tactics and timing alone won’t get you far. 20acc won’t get you far. Even if you have 40+acc, but you aren’t moving very fast or dodging well, won’t get you far. There many layers of skill in this game.

I've done a lot of DeFraG at one point back in time so in terms of speed I can be very efficient. Dodging is okay I guess... I know about it and I'm always trying to do it.

The thing is on Areowalk for example, it's useless to be fast and to run all over the map because the other guy will find you and chase you. I was told to do a lot of damage no matter what, to always seek to make damage on the opponent (because apparently that's what cypher does or did) but after the 10th death I can tell it's hard to make a come back after I killed him.

I grinded 6h playtime a day of CA to go from 15% to 35-40%. The only thing holding you back atm is aim, imo. You can learn to aim, just takes time

Any advice on how I could improve it? I don't know if it's because of my physical settings, in-game settings or just me who's blind.

My sensitivity is 2.35 with 0 mouse accel and m_pitch/m_yaw of 0.022 .

I took a look at my QL profile and it says my average rocket is 30% (used to be 33 :<), 20 percent for lg (it increased, I was doing 19 or so before) and 32% rail (used to be 33).

It's got nothing to do with your settings. Like latvietis said, play some CA which is aim intensive. Constant action, you learn combat a lot quicker.

I don't think constant action means waiting for that new player with 200/100 on the stairs for 2 minutes each round in spec. I am not a great player by any means but I genuinely think that modes like FFA and the team combat stuff can be better as long as there are at least some good players in the server. You also need to focus much more on dodge. TDMpickup is great as well although its not always available, same for ctf.

Was your point that CA/team modes can be very good fight practice provided the server has good players? If so I agree, pub CA is a depressing place...stay private :p

Yes, but private matches are hard to find sometimes. Altough 2v2 publics can be good as well as long as the players aren't complete noobs. But pub 4v4 is just spamfest and waiting in spec.

Your out-of-control game sucks, thats it. Low focus, not enough experience. As harosh said, stick to the ABC game, deal unreturned damage, get timing on major items without being killed, dont expose yourself too much, have an escape option... the usual stuff.

Doesnt mean shit. Cyphers overall acc is sometimes around 20 aswell, due to his lg/plasma spam.
But if this aint your case, then you arent good enough at picking the right combat situations for yourself.

Sounds like youve developed a bad habit of "Im stacked -> I can do whatever I want" by playing noobs. Just play more challenging matches than all those 20 to -4 aeros and it will go away eventually.

One thing I have noticed through playing higher level elo'd players is prediction shots. I've noticed guys that get into the 1400-1500+elo range can just predict the shit out of opponents that are several hundred elo points lower than them.

So really the biggest thing is that your movement is probably super predictable. You even mentioned you died from rocket splash. Well how did that splash get there in the first place? Because your routes are probably the same over and over.

I actually struggle quite a bit with this myself when I'm up against 1500+ types. They just always know where the hell I am. It's the same if you were playing a 900-1000 elo guy. You just always know where they are. So be more conscious of the routes you take even just straight up stopping for a couple of seconds to try and throw people off.

If for instance I'm in the tunnel (mh place) on Bloodrun and fighting with a rocket, I'm going to get at least half the damage on myself... I guess I'm aiming too much at the feet. But yeah that's what I meant by splash rocket. Not necessarily the opponent who predicted my spot. I don't think it happens this much but yeah I should be more conscious of where I go. It happened to me to just pop out in front of him for no reason (and he wasn't looking for me either).

Brainie also your lag may be an issue too? Every time I played with you, there would be times where you would start skipping around.. Also just learn to spam a lot and you will generally start doing better against better players..

Imo you should play ca until you are like 1800 elo in strength. You will need to hit 30 or close to 30 pc lg and learn to be patient with the rl. You can be good without decent combat skills aswell butit will be much harder.

also try to make planned moves on items for example in aerowalk out of control get precise timing of mh wait in ya room until the last second and surprise your opponent push him off of mega in a good scenario

I think I've played you twice on ZTN you and beat you pretty easily. I am a newbie dueler, ZTN is my strongest map since everyone wants to play it.

You do have good fighting skills but you are 'rushing too much' and you need more positional play.

You have to just be aware of the stacks. When you are out of control, or have the lower stack by more than like 75-100, get into position to deal damage when you opponent picks up the item, or when he is on way to pick it up. Be in a position where you can deal the damage and haul ass without taking damage yourself. After dying concentrate mostly on getting the good weapons, but don't be predictable against a good player.

Then when the stacks are even or close to even, steal an item. Try to do it in a way where you get the first damage, or position yourself where the item spawns so you pick it up in middle of fight.

The best way to learn is to watch Cypher I think. Pay attention to where he hangs out on maps out of control and in control. Pay attention to where he sets his traps.

The way to win a duel is not to rush all the time and trying steal items all the time, and try to rely just on making all your shots and out fighting someone. It's disrespectful to your opponent, and your elo will plateau probably around 1700. The way to duel is by being aware of the item times, your opponent's tendencies, your weaknesses, the strong points on the map, the weapons, etc and strategize based on those things.

Well TY, I should have said I am inexperienced. I've played Quake on and off for 15 years but as far as 1v1 I've only played a few hundred matches. And in every map but maybe ztn, cure and sin, I am not very good.

But I do watch the pros play a lot and I watch the fraze vids a lot and try to learn from them.

The problem is always stress out. At one point there will be like 3 mins left on the counter and I will start to put more pressure no matter what because of hope to get a frag or something. I can try to slow down and get a stack but I feel it takes too much time.

I'll try to be less aggressive though. Thanks for all you've said! Oh and I'll watch out the RA jump as well... It's a reflex because I'm scared the opponent might take it lol.

NP. Another good resource are the Fraze thinking out loud vids. Just google them. I watch them every once in a while and find I pick up a few things usually every time I watch. There are like 4 ztn vids. If you watch all of them and then play a few games on ztn and then watch them again you might be able to cover a lot of ground/.

The nerves are probably mostly because you're new to duel. Once you are out thinking your opponent by a good amount you'll start pulling out more victories in the end.

this might sound weird, but trust me..

to get started, you should take a break from quake live. spend some time in other fps games (counterstrike, arma, quest for hussein, to name but a few). many of these games are more hitscan-focused, so this will raise your accuracy to AT LEAST 24% (source; i used to do this myself)

after that, return to quake live. play nothing but ca until you can out-aim all the thunderstruck heroes and people posting in this thread who don't actually duel

by now, your duel elo will be suffering a bit, so consider working with one of your Steam Friends to boost it into an acceptable range (say 1500-1600) - that way you can have a bit of credibility to ride on. make your name have different colours in it, and copy cooller's smiley chat bind

at this point, you are ready to cross the desert and come back to oreowalk. with your newfound aiming abilities, you can destroy all the other newbies. the trick with this stage is that you really only need to use the railgun most of the time. if you can get the rail gun and shoot the other man with it, it doesn't matter how good he is at controlling the armors. try to ding him right between the eyes when he gets distracted staring at the item timers or changing his loadout!!

once you get some duel experience under your belt, you'll make friends and probably become a major player in the scene. heck, you might even be sponsored! at this point, think about donating to projects like reflex. all the skills you're developing in quake live will transfer over nicely to that game, but it needs support from Gamers Like You to get off the ground

As for the break part, I only play ql on week-ends.

Firstly I'd like to point out something which apparently no one has noticed about his playstyle. Are you using binds?

If not, please create some and begin to use them after certain moments during a duel. The more generic the better like the eternal smiley emote or some phrase of encouragement e.g. "epic frag!". You can go for something more creative and lengthy but you're risking your e-reputation if it isn't a well-received bind. In a community this small you can't afford to embarrass yourself.
The bind itself serves as a way for you to feel good about getting a nice shot or getting a frag and you should let your opponent know that you feel good, which will in turn infuriate them.

Second, I would highly recommend you begin training with the more fringe weapons in the game. The lightning rifle and rocket shooter are fine weapons, but compared to the pineapple launcher, the instantaneous damage is weak. Also underutilized in duel and online is the plasma launcher which can produce insane DPS when aimed properly. These will all give you a leg-up on the opponent when you constantly push to regain control of railgun.

Lastly I want to harp on the sheer importance of timing your rocket jumps correctly. A good way to demonstrate and explain this importance is just about any game of Clan Arena where wildly flying around confuses most opponents and will net you the frags. Bring this skill with you into duel and use it to your advantage. Whenever you have the available health you should be aiming to rocket jump, be it to steal items or net the sick frag (remember that bind!). Always listen for key sounds like the opponent jumping or switching weapons and time your angular leap to coincide with a situation leading to you having a powerful lead over the other player.

Combine these tips and tricks into your playstyle to achieve a level of duel ELO which will no doubt prove to everyone your duel prowess.

All of this said, you sound like a spectacular young man to converse and play with and if I hadn't already put my head through a wall and retired I'd be tempted to invite you to my home for a duel.

It's normal dude, these players are just better than you on all aspects, and know more about quake and duel than just the basics. Couple hundred duels playes is not a lot at all. Play some more and look at your game critically from time to time. Watch good players play and notice what they do differently tactic wise.

His problem is that he'll jump to the RA on ztn from the SG ledge when you are standing on the GL with your LG out, and out stacking him (lol). He does stuff like that all game. You're really not helping him much by telling him to play other game modes.

When out of control:

1. Be patient;
2. Don't be greedy;
3. Keep track of item times (rotation) and steal what you safely can;
4. Try to do damage after enemy picks up items;
5. ???;
6. Profit.

you can think what you are doing wrong for a whole day but some people are just on another level miles ahead of you so you can play your 100% pick up everything, have nice aim and they still beat you without much trouble even if they suck atm, with few tricks you didnt know, read your moves easily or just fucking around and hit everything etc ... my advice is to play different people so you will not get frustrated and always learn something new, find someone on similar level to practice, maybe add some ca or amphi if you like to play these to help your overall aim but not necessarily,

When in doubt, think what would cooller do.

Others have said it and I'll reiterate. You haven't accumulated enough experience in duel to worry about intimate details. Play more and practice better.

A few hours a weekend is not going to be enough to yield the results you're seeking, especially against those with more experience than you, never mind the echelon of veterans you likely won't overcome. It comes down to you and what you want to do. If you truly want to improve, know that duel requires a different mindset. The smallest divide in skill is a game twenty frags apart. You have to learn to put the score aside and focus on what's important.

What is important in duel? Baby steps. You can't watch good players and replicate what they do all at once. Pick something to practice specifically for your duels that day. Time one item, play one map, attack with a certain stack, play out of control, etc. Most importantly, do not develop bad habits while you slowly work these factors into your game.

As you gain more experience, it's going to be much easier to identify what you need to do in order to become better. You'll be able to analyze your own mistakes and weaknesses, as well as your opponents'. It's a very daunting task to become a good duel player, but very rewarding if you're willing to put in the effort.

Suitable aggression levels and position the most important!

Focus on increasing your lg acc for now , nothing else. When it gets stronk , like let's say 35-40 , you will probably get a 200 elo boost .. least.. Play only your best maps for now also. Aero is very good for aim fest and ztn is very good for +back (that is what noobs call tactical). Oh yea .. one last thing .. like baksteen said before , it takes time to become a solid player. Although it really doesn't take much to reach 1500-1600 elo imo.

Do you honestly think that you should time 2 items and focus on positioning in order to defeat some random 1300 elo guy ? If so , then i bet u hit 20 lg and 30 rail as well.
Positioning comes with experience , timing 2 items at once is way harder ... a lot of good players (2000+) time item by instinct or just cycle them.
I am just trying to tell the guy that it's not that hard as some people think it is.

Yeah I've gotta say... items are super important, and I thought it was everything till just the other day.

I was playing this guy that always always spanks me on Aero. I downloaded this custom hud and when we started up a game 30 seconds in I realized my timer didnt work. Shit!

Well I said fuck it, and you know what? Just going off feeling of the items I grabbed more items than him and I beat him on Aero 13-1. WTF???

So yeah, that game has made me come to realize that although the items are important they can't be the only thing you focus on otherwise you don't have enough headspace to calculate stuff that really matters.

If you don't have practice partners, you could stream your games to get more help.

Do you have any duel demos? Not like I could offer advice becuse I'm probably worse than you, but it would be interesting to see.

Ok more serious advise:

- Get a better setup. That includes everything hardware related, physical, like a 144hz screen, hopefully good desk, etc.
- Waste your teenage years on it.
- Don't 24/7 drunken CA. Try to get better at the game, at least a bit. Duel is very good for that (due to frustration :P).
- Play players that are marginally better than you are at a given time.
- If you don't miss half your brain, then you'll eventually become better at quake.

Quake is very much situational and of having good hardware. With experience and a WMO bst mouse you'll be a pub stomper in no time.

Then comes the next step, of keeping up in competitions, winning and stuff. I think right now there's no point in telling you to watch a demo, tutorial or whatever, because at this point you understand the basics but at the same time won't understand the content of tutorials that require having a higher skill. If you do anyway, please re-watch them in one year, to see how now you do understand.

In other words, it'd be fruitless to say "want to play tennis better? Watch Federer and copy what he does". What you need is practice practice practice, better if deliberate practice.

So, get to beating 1500 elo level players level, which requires either having good aim (which you don't now) or getting a grasp of the "metagame" and stuff, and then come back for more guidance on how to waste your life and be good at it.


And before I leave, quite quickly:
1) Focus on not dying.
2) Focus on not rushing at all times. You have to understand the 'meta' of the game.
3) Focus on not using LG at all times.
4) Give yourself small objectives, like that, or setting up a trap, or understanding how to break +back game (like in ztn, upper YA gayness).
5) +back +rockets is OP.
6. Spam. Shoot.
7) Become a one map wonder, or two map wonder. Good maps are the dm13 and toxicity combo, for example.
8) To give some hard love, if you want to be good at fps games I think there's no point in keeping up if you don't have good aim. Without it you'll hit a very low wall and just get stuck forever; a perma noob that will never understand the game in the slightest.
9) Don't blame your internet connection (unless something like 100ms lag spikes at all times).
10) Still, don't use wi-fi and wireless mice lol.
11) Understand there's more to map knowledge than just knowing where the items are. For example that are routes for items, escape routes, angles, better than positions than others, when to use a teleport (do use them too), having always present than you can indeed rocket jump to places, etc. etc.
12) Focus on not dying (the out of control game stuff)
13) Realize opponents are beating you because they have more experience, knowledge and think about more factors than you do.
