Well I'm amazed, had no idea. Never tried the game neither do i know anyone who's plaing it. Looks fun. Nice graphics and weapons effects. So I wonder? Why didn't it catch on to the gaming scene . Explain please, I'm curious.

Well, ask Sierra. After realizing that the Tribes project was the only real threat to Counter-Strike's supremacy, Sierra bought the Softhouse that was producing Tribes 2 and then fired every single person who was behind this project. You also may have noticed there wasn't any marketing when T2 was finally released. Well, it's also Sierra's fault.
Basically what the gamer community saw was a major company protecting its product. But in the most dishonourable way. :\

Me, again, I watched the movie about 10 times and it's damned beautiful..I have been a Q3 freak for a couple of years now but I'm looking for some change. Since U2K3 isn't an alternative (bought it, played it, uninstalled it) and DoomIII or Q4 is more than a year away, so I'll see if I can find a T2 demo or the full game somewhere and try it out..and some tips (url's etc. from any T2:ers out there is most appreciated. : )

learn how to ski (hold jump when going downhill) effectively is what you'd need to learn first.
afaik there arent any t2 newb sites around, so you'd be best off trying to find someone to show you the ropes :/

Tribes and Tribes 2 weren't pushed as musch as UT, Q3, and Halflife were. Lots of people still play it including me on occasion. :D

If you've installed nimo codec pack (death to you!@#$!@), thats the reason why you'll probably get sound but no image.

The problem is 'fdfshow', a directshow stream controller or something. Essentially it seems to act as a inbetween for the movie and the codec which causes problems.

You need to uninstall nimo, then (if you really do need it) reinstall it w/o fdfshow (and their other recommended non-starters). Then install the latest xvid codec. Then watch the movie.

You never NEED the nimo codec pack, unless you are not a total newbie with codecs (like understand what they are).
It's known tho to cause all sort of a weird errors.

This movie is best FPS movie I have ever seen. It definatley showcases the beauty of Tribes 2.

Want to play an online teamplay game with multiple armour classes, loadouts, terrain deployables and vehicles? Then nothing even comes close to Tribes 2. Sure it is a little harder to learn than the point and shoot of Counterstrike or others but a little patience will reward any player with a depth filled teamgame which is totally unique.

I played CS. Then I met Tribes 2 and fell totally in love. Yes the learning curve was steep, but I was lucky enough to have people to help me. Now I'm in one of the top clans in Europe.
What happened?
Well, originally we had about 500 000 players (at least thats what I heard long ago) who had their own copy of Tribes 2. Then Sierra fired Dynamix (the developer of Tribes 2), so they couldn't fix several bugs with patches. The people that we didn't lose to the numerous bugs we lost because of the steep learning curve. We've toyed several times with the idea of setting up a "Tribes 2 school" for newbies to learn how things work in the game. Now the only problem is that the player-stream has stopped flowing and we're only left with the hardcore players.
Although, our prayers has been somewhat answered. Sierra is working on a patch (they were supposed to realese a final patch last month, but it just screwed us over even more), which is supposed to fix all our problems. Then they are going to re-realese Tribes 2 in November/December or January. I can personally recommend this game to ANY gamer, and this movie shows exactly why we play this game.
Our community is no longer what it once was, shameful enough. We often ask ourselves why this game never became a much bigger game player-wise than CS. Tribes 2 has little to almost no cheating, we have a very friendly community, the game completely rocks and we have one helluva time when playing. You need good tactics for you team if you want to win matches though.
A medium-skilled team with great tactics are able to win over a very skilled team with normal tactics. Thats what makes it so much fun and exciting.

Very good movie dude. The only think I didn't get was that feeling when you've just grabbed the flag you're dodging blue spins and throwing your last flare at one of two rockets flying your way.

I've downloaded around 50 fps movies over the past few days due to a major boost with my connection, and I must say this is by far the movie that impressed me the most.

My deepest respect for the authors of the movie. I can only join the crowd of amazed watchers :)

If you got limited bandwidth, put this on top of your list. It'll beat 96% of the cs movies and 95% of the q3 movies out there - Not in terms of ownage moments, but pure stunningly editing and an indescribable overall mood. After watching it you will feel nicely relaxed and satisfied ;)

Played t2 for 1.5 years in a top5 Euro team, v. fun game, scene is as good as death though. Too bad it never catched the attention of the Pro-gaming leagues. Problem with this game is that u need a lot of players, maps are always 14vs14 or more, so hence the difficulty to get a) a skilled tribe of at least 18-20 players b) hard to travel/go to major lans cuz most tribes are international.

tribes1 was the first game i played multiplayer and it was very fun every time.
we ran into network cafes after every schoolday and playaed several hours of tribes1. i continued plying it online when i got my first isdn.
then t2 came and it was even better. but i have to admit that similar to the quake games the moves got easier. skiing down hills is in t2 just holding down spacebutton and i wasnt used to the disks.. because they fly much faste than in tribes1. in my opinion it is a very nice game and the only reason why i stopped playing it and started q3 was that nobody played it on LANs. im looking forward to watching this movie. its the first tribes2 movie ive ever seen and even if it wouldnt be so nice i would still watch it cause i just love this game...

Skiing is easy? Heh, it took me almost a year to learn how to ski on Slapdash... Personally I think that good movement in T2 is much harder to learn than in UT (I'm not a Q3A fan, so I don't want to compare T2 with this game). But I don't think it is a good place to continue this discussion :-)

Please remember that all shots in "Travel" were made on PUBLIC servers. No clanwars, only random players and accidentally synchronized attacks and defend.

Well, I was one of first people to own Tribes 2 in the UK. My Q2CTF clan (the Justice Department) was badly looking for a new game and had dabbled individually online and @ Clan LANs with Tribes 1. Tribes 2 was our Doom 3 - we'd spent months awaiting it and getting all excited about it - preparing to upgrade esp. for it and endlessly discussing it, getting excited. On the day it was released, around 10 members of the clan already had it (legit). We even had a clan server... and spent the first few months of it praccying with fellow Q2CTF -> T2 clans like OAP and BYT (not sure if they're still about). We got fairly fed up eventually...

1. The game was laggy.
2. The team requirements were too much. We had to recruit a whole bunch of reliable active players to make sure we had 12-15 online. Organising a praccy was like a military operation.
3. Not enough clans - so the BW league took aaaaaaages to start.
4. Bugs
5. Was generally unsatisfying.

Anyways, that was about a year ago, so about 1 month back I decide to reinstall it and give it a second chance. I have a new spec PC, enough to get better FPS n a better connection. 2 servers seemed to be in use for whole of UK, one was some crappy ballchasing mod and the other was running the ice level (Katabatic?). Just wasn't much fun... spending 2 mins getting to base seeing no-one on the way to be taken out by an automated turrent. IMO in terms of teamplay, RtCW n BF1942 are more fun.

If that was the learning curve being too much then fudge it, frankly. Not patient enough... besides, Q2CTF is full of strafejumpin'amplovin'fastgrapplin'pillspammin'rocketlaunchin'railgunnin'quadtimin'chaingunnin'techswappin'n'flagcappin' action so anything less is caca :)

1. The best netcode I know (UT, UT2003, TO, Q3A base, BF, CS), lags only if the connection or server suck.

Netcode poor, I can agree on that, it has a bad netcode compared to Q3. I still get a good ping though, so I don't see it as a huge problem unless you play on a 56k.
Maps too big, somebody has been playing on a Katabatic/Archipelago (two of the biggest maps in Tribes2) public server way too much. Most of the most popular maps in Tribes2 are quite small.

Combat in Tribes 2 isn't even as intense as Q2, never mind QW or Q3.

Edit: and it's infrequent and limited. Lotsa fly up, spam down, etc. Q2CTF, Q3CTF, UTCTF are all far superior... and much more fun... as is BF1942.

And the team sizes are ridiculous. Fielding 12 players+ is/was just impractical and too much hassle.

Thats your opinion and I respect that. If you like going around being a mindless deathmatcher I can understand why Q2 or any other game like it is the game for you.

First off, combat in Tribes2 very intense. If you ever played a real clan match you would know it is. Second, Tribes 2 needs tactics, spammers on a hill, bomber flying in to disrupt, Heavy Offense going to take out generators, Light Offense to kill their Light Defense, Shrike Offense to take out their Shrike defense, wildcat midfielder to pickup a capper on the run, heavy defense to defend the gens... seriously I could go on for AGES. That is far from 'limited'. 'Lotsa fly up'? Yes skiing is a skill you must master, so is flying too. Going around as a mindless soldier may be your thing but people who like more advanced combat will probably like Tribes 2. So I think being good at Tribes 2 is much more satisfying combat wise than any other game. Unlike other games where you basicly just need a good reaction time. All the weapons in Tribes 2 requires their own mastering. Chaining, discing (mid-air discs), grenades, grenade launcher, laser rifle, shocklance, mortar, as previously I could go on for AGES. Then you have the different positions, armors, vehicles, etc. Which also of course introduces the steep learning curve, but I have had np topping that in the ~15 months I've been playing Tribes 2.

12++ players depends on what gametype you play.
We have Base, which requires ~14 players, which most of us has little to no problems getting. Then we have Classic which needs 10. Arena which is 5, etc.

But anyway, like I said, you are entitled to your own opinion.

Like I said in #60, mebbe I didn't enjoy it because the learning curve was too steep. A learning curve is fine but that was ridiculous. You have to spend half your time arsing about doing crap... and yes, the team sizes limits the impact an individual can make which is very frustrating.

Well, from my experience in top 10 play in Europe you actually need to think more than in other games when playing a match. Should I cover my flag carrier, should I go chase, should I stop those incoming Heavy Offense, should I go Heavy Offense myself, should I repair those base turrets to stop incoming Light Offense.

This makes every players way of thinking having a GREAT impact on the match results. I love this game because of you go cowboy(solo), then you're dead. You need to think as a team, not as an individual. If you go off cowboying you are useless to your team.

So I think saying that an individual player not making a difference is complete and utter crap. I have seen players from every team, which if they don't play, they seriously hamper their teams performance. I have even seen teams making their whole tactics around 2-3 single star players. So tbh I think, an individual not making a difference, is wrong.

And about the action level, PLEASE do not judge the action level from public play. First off, it depends on what servers you play on. Since you are in the UK I presume you play on either Blueyonder or something of that sort. Which is always filled with "newbies" in general terms of speaking. I'm norwegian and I usually play on german servers. Not only because Tribes 2 is the only FPS game so far I have met where you can be a great player with a 100 to 300 ping (depending on what position you play of course). But also because those are the most action filled once. As most players do play international. This is a European game, we normally don't hold any country-league games. Maybe a duel-tournament or something of that sort.
So, back to my point, judging the action level from a public server is not a good idea. Because people do not normally team-play there, which is the biggest factor in Tribes 2. Team-play. Last night, I played in one of the jaw-dropping matches ever. Action non-stopping full-packed.

Although, I don't want to scrape public games totally off the platter, everyday I go on public servers and have loads of fun too. Basicly play with your friends and it won't stop being fun.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, I guess I have a lot to say. Again, you are entitled to your own opinion, so I'm not going to try to hunt you down because you have a different one than I, I just feel that a lot of that is wrong from my point of view on all of this, so I just have to say my deal in the case too. This will be my last post in this topic, I guess I have caused enough ruckus over this :)

Just to echo what everybody else has said (who says that inflating the ego is bad) really cool movie. Played T1 once at a lan and had a blast, this looks just like it but more. I was thinking during it "what if this was our online game as opposed to cs?". I read the netcode remarks, but I don't think I'd find the battle unsatisfying... There looks like there's good close up fighting and excellent air fighting, which is one of the things I loved about UT. All I know is when it comes to rockets in q3 I'm all about prediction, and it looks like that's a pretty highly valued skill here.

What are those ugly pixelated transitions man? It makes the whole movie experience ugly- (yes i have proper xvid codecs). Who the heck encodes in xvid when it's know that it's quite buggy as of now. Why not do a normal divx encode?

This was probably THE best gaming movie I've ever seen. Absolutely stunning..And I suppose it doesn't even contain anything that "special" in terms of gaming..But still, a wonderful movie, and the first movie that actually made me want to play a game just by watching the gameplay. Lightyears better than the "standard" promo vids showing gameplay.

Reason t2 never got really big? Not because of bad netcode or too hard skill curve but because of team sizes. In europe it has been played 14vs14 mainly and in US 16vs16. So it takes real dedication to run a clan.

The sadest thing I know is people who have never played t2 before and search for servers with players on to try it. Usually they end up on a public game with 95% newbies (ie. katabatic only servers are looked upon as "newbie servers" because quite frankly they are populated by people who are new and have no idea how to play the game effectivly).

Its even in this movie. People driving out their MPB in the middle of the map and placing turrets around it. Then they stand still there with the missile launcher for the rest of the game. Its not lastingly entertaining, its not how any half serious competative clan would ever do in a match, its not an effective tactic. But sadly alot of people get stuck at that point and figure that this is what t2 is all about and after a day or two they go back to q3 or cs or whereever.

It really makes me sad to see such a brilliant game go down. The size of the european t2 community is only of a few hundred dedicated people now. Yes there have been alot of bugs, patches, more patches and annoyance but still it remains the only game that has made me play it 4+ hours/day for over a year. If only more people would give it a serious chance..

Yes, it is really sad that ppl everywhere speak about "Esport", "eSport", "esport" etc but don't want to play the game where they have to make a serious effort to play effectively. I don't know a game where teamplay is so hard to learn, where it is so much tactics and even strategy (I'm a journalist working for one of two largest computer games magazines in Poland, so I know "a few" games...).

All these things around T2 show me that in fact there is no esport yet. Ppl want to play games where they are able to play effectively in month or two, especially if the new FPS is similar to the previous one. Do you know a sport discipline where you can be a master after 1-3 months? I don't... Esport is still the future of what we have now: e-entertainment.

besides teamsizes aint the main thing, the learning curve is. Skiing doesnt make sense and there is no real tutorials that show you how.

Also, pubs with only good players are even worse. I enjoy playing with new players because they are willing to learn. Good players just want to rack up points and look cool.

T2 was destroyed by a rushed release, a steep learning curve and arrogant retard players.

Life is the best tutorial, and brain. Both are always ready to use.

I don't agree that "T2 was destroyed etc". Bullshit, just a common propaganda, especially in mouths of ex-T2 players or T1-players. There were many players who didn't understand that game or didn't put enough effort into the game, that's all.

BTW steep learning curve (what means skill in function of time) means that game is easy too learn. T2 has very flat learning curve.

Hmmm on reflection, this is better than the other Tribes 2 movie I saw (Shadow Troopers Japan)... tho when I first saw that it impressed me because it gave me a better impression of the buzz/excitement of setting up and executing an elaborate cap in T2 - kitting up, getting into position, acquiring targetting laser guides on defenses, splitting off and spamming mortars at internal systems... vehicles, etc.

that is one amazing movie and its prompted me to play tribes two again. the frags are great... its so hard to hit someone in the air with a spinfusor

This movie is definatly well worth the time spent downloading, the scale of things just blows you away. especially liked the fly by scenes towards the end, and the aircraft with the sunset backdrop. v.good!

The game was never really pushed in Europe, it's always been an American franchise. Sierra stunted Tribes 2 by releasing it buggy and then sacking the whole of Dynamix (the dev company).

Since then Sierra have had second thoughts, they've fixed the game with good patches, added two exciting new mods and have announced they are working on a "Tribes 3" (no official name yet, expect it in 3 years).

I've played most FPS at clan level, CS especially and Tribes cannot be compared. The best way to describe it is to call it a Strategic FPS. The learning curve is long but only if you run around servers doing crazy things, if you take 10 minutes to read a tutorial for the game you'll instantly halve the learning curve from n00b level to "gamer" level. Of course that is the beauty of the game, 14 a-side, endless team tactics and positions (really, no other FPS comes close, I cannot say that enough) it just goes on and on. I've played for 2 years now and I've played for England and yet I'm still picking up endless skills and learning new positions all the time. Despite that the game still keeps and active pace (especially with classic mod), there is very little running 10km to get fragged in 10 seconds like BF1942.

The game does have strong European, North American and Australian leagues in place that others have linked to in previous posts.

If Travel has given you even the slightest tingle then go grab the game, it's very cheap (budget title) and well worth the money now that Sierra have finally fixed it.

this is -[ENIG]ma-. i am an American Tribes 2 player, and have been playing Tribes since it first came out. i have always brought home new games like CS, UT, UT2k3, and other shit like that... but nothing compairs to Tribes2. it takes a hella long time to get the ropes down, and then it takes 100 times longer to actually be "l33t"

if you are looking for a cheap thrill... then go with CS, UT2k3, and other games where you can purchase and own the same night.

if you are looking for a game that you can put your heart and soul into and stay with it daily for years... Tribes2 is your game

Tribes2 is all about strats, skill, and fun. matches are held with 14 people (for standard classic ladder on TWL). with 3 armors and "packs" that can help add to the versatility of each armor, there are countless positions a person can play, and with vehicles... it adds a new dimention to teamplay. our teams use "mortar spam" with timing scripts with "cappers" (flag grabbers) to time spam with cappers runs split seconds apart leaving the flag open just long enough to get in and out.

public servers are shit... but if you want to get skilled fast, Duel Mod, LakRabbit (and MINrabbit), classic, and arena are gonna get you there the fastest.
