No I told people actively back in 2010 (or 2011) that I would forever refuse to alter my gameplay to fit to online. As I do not view the online lagfest that quake has become as the real game.
Also I feared that my skill on the whole would decrease from altering my gameplay to fit to online rather than the way I was playing which should've worked fine on lan. That I wasn't invited to lans anywhere from 2009 - 2011 is just messed up. Especially because people who I beat consistently did go.

I tried to actively make ID realize that what they were making wasn't quake but a lagfest... At which I (perhaps) failed or they just didn't care.

My understanding of the game predicted how QL's changes would influence the game far before anyone actually played like that.
Next to that I've also won quite a lot of local competition in other games (from blobby volley to UT to Red Alert to Worms and I was also fairly decent at racing games (especially the formula 1 and forza games which require delecate handling ;p)).

I have played ages with 50-70 ms. I can confirm, LG feels best on 50-55ms. Now I am on 30 ms. It's different world for skilled player in good way.
Why 50-70 pingers are lagfest LG +attack whores? becouse it's only way to win, becouse you are not able to use other guns properly. Ping makes you play like that. With 30 ms , now I can use a lot RL/PG and some more RG. LG direct fights are worse, but LG are more responsable , so you can first start LG battles and give damage before you recieve.
Now after 6dmg lg, it's even bigger advantage for low pinger.
ps. I have played you in 2009 and so on. I have so much experience in Q3/QL duel, you are 2000 ELO player, you were so standart, nothing special in anyway.

Because I know WHY it is that you HAD TO play +forward lg.... and that (if I needed to win) it would force me to also play +forward with lg.
This has made quake into a game it never should've become... and nowadays it lead to a downtuning of the LG because the developers are too limited in their thinking about the topic to actually fix the real problem.

If we would've played on lan in 2010 or if we both had ping 30 perhaps you would've seen a different me. As then I wouldn't have had to struggle so much to cope with the +forward lg shit.

It's because the influence of ping is too large in lg fights.

[The situation:]
Say that we have a fair fight on LAN (or very low pings) where you jump into a room agressing me.
Because it's fair I will win 50% of the time and you will win 50% of the time.

[Assumption that your ping is crappy and my ping is good. The combined ping of ours is fairly high.]

Now online if the combined ping of ours is fairly high (doesn't matter much who is the guy with the higher ping) this same situation would be skewed into almost 70% - 30% in favor of the agressor when the agressor uses LG.
With other weapons (because they are not unlagged or are called a railgun which has a high reload time) this skewing effect does not apply in the same way (still asuming a fair fight on low ping). [note @ end of post]

Now because this advantage of +forward LG:
1) I would be heavily negatively influencing my own game if I did not do this.
2) Whenever a situation on lan is 50 / 50 I should assume that vs a crap ping it's 30 / 70 which is suddenly a very bad situation. So I should need to alter my game such that I don't get into these situations.

The only real way to make the game 'fair' in terms of situations is if I would start to reduce my agressive attacks with RL and increase agression with LG.

Now for the low ping guy ofcourse he has more options... he can play agressive with RL as well as agressive with LG. But the whole 'defensive' style which works on lan is completely destroyed because of the massive advantage in certain situations of +forward LG.



[note] If in the same situation you would come in with RL your own ping would matter and (because your ping sucked) this would mean I would win large.
With rail it's more equal as you can't really play "agressive" with rail due to weakness of the reload time. You'll still be vulnerable if you jump into a fight with rail out no matter what you do. (Although you do still have an advatange as an agressor over the defender in general compared to lan. But on lan the defender with rail has a large advantage over the agressor because of sound / limited entry locations of the agressor etc.)

Translation for anyone interested, he would rather ping rape somebody then actually having a semi fair game where he is forced to adapt his playstyle to the current situation.

Hitscan weapons are the most viable weapon on higher pings because of antilag. It gives higher ping players an option.
Removing unlagged would make EVERY weapon "worthless" and skew the game so horribly in favour of the person with the ping advantage that it would be pointless to play if the skill levels are equal. I never challenged this, i never intended too challenge that but yet that is the thing you start complaining about, your comment about someone else being a mental patient makes this fairly ironic.

My reason is that the asynchronic server state leads to a different actual game than what is possible on lan. Aka you physically would have different options online, and they are all skewed towards playing +forward with lg. (the higher the pings the more the skew)

It has nothing to do with me having a better ping than anyone else. Actually my ping has never been that good. It's pretty stable though around 35. But in OSP times I used to play on 50 ~ 80 most of the time with a pretty laggy connection. I had no real problem with that.

Even in QL I placed high (top4 / top8) in several USA based tournaments while pinging 130 ~ 170. This was not a big deal to me, and it would've been even easier (for me, with my playstyle) if the netcode was OSP like.

Go play osp or vq3 without unlagged with a ping of 35+ vs someone with 10ping.

The only consistency is on the side of the person with the ping advantage.

I did, with 120ms vs 15ms, felt really consistent, yes lower ping had an advantage, but what I saw on the screen correlated with what was actually happening.

If you have fluctuating ping,jitter etc it wont feel consistent at all.
If you have straight 120ping, then sure it will feel consistent, but so would it in quakelive.

Now imagine you having lag reconcilliation in the same situation, it would look strange without clientside prediction but would still be highly consistent.

Issues arise when your doing a shit fuck ton of interpolation and prediction to try and smooth out the players experience.
The client is basically guessing what will happen next and then the shit hits the fan when things dont line up in a pretty way.

Still, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks making it a viable option overall Instead of having no compensation and basically splitting up the community even further because ping advantage will be to stronk..

LAN would be great to have all the time.... that way the netcode itself doesn't really matter anyway (infinite bandwidth + extreme fast response times).

I can deal with any ping just fine, as long as it's MY ping I have to worry about. It's not really possible to get great consistency if you have to alter your game to suit the opponents ping.
