So this is basically UT4 pre-alpha movement? I said "pre-alpha" since Epic are heavily working on movement model for ut4, still testing a lot of ideas.

ut4 movement is a bit more sophisticated with its rolldodge wallslide etc. also epic dithced double jumps. this is more like ut3/ut2004

Yeah I'm actually pleased with the UT4 movement so far. Its not enough to make the game something I will want to play all that much, but its a big improvement. Rocket jumps, wall slides, single button wall dodges, its lots better

It doesnt seem to have anything new or worth playing the game for. I bought beta access to the game so I can really try it out and give it a fair shot, but this looks maybe even worse than UT4 right now.

Visually gorgeous and I appreciate the devs attitude, but theres a reason I stopped playing UT2k4 and this looks like a slightly worse version of it.

I really like arena fps games to have fluid movement. I dont care if its strafe jumping or not but I am really drawn to fluid games. Everything from reborn to telos to freefall is looking to have some sort of fluid movement whether is zero grav, skiing, hooks or strafe jumping. This looks too slow and restricting and the guns seemed a little iffy from what I read on the website.

If the movement sucked but the guns were good it wouldnt be so bad but its looking like they both will be sub par which is a shame as this is a major arena fps title that is very far along in development and looks like it has some real money behind it.

Theres several games on there that don't feel like Q3.

The only thing that you're forced to have when you use an engine is the time it takes to draw what you put in.
Also some engines might have some forced way of lighting things or force you to have a certain way of ingame modeling (how 3d models are represented) which might influence the overall feel.

The engine doesn't dictate really anything at all about gameplay. Some might make certain genres easier to make due to workflow considerations they made. C# or C++ at the end of they day it can feel the exact same for the user even if the coding is slightly different. What matters is if the team can use the tools well.

The main differences in engines is the lightning engine and the way they handle shaders. Because games have to be rendered in real time, you have to approximate the hell out of everything. Depending on the engine, they may cut corners in different ways. Unity 4 uses Beast lighting (used in Mirrors Edge) and Unity 5 will use Enlighten (Battlefield 4). They look different even though its still the same engine.

The thing is, that this game is the closest to release then any others like Reflex and ut4, thats why it is worth of our or atleast mine attention.

I think it actually looks really fun, but not as an esport. I also like how a lot of the corners are quite dark to offer some hidin maybe... in a sort of fatal-instinct-y way.

Is this map just a prototype map? I see a LOT of UT3 meshes in there. Epic carried over a sizable chunk of UT3 meshes to UDK for example purposes. I'm seeing stairs, garage doors, wall meshes, railings, pillars, decals, and all sorts of stuff from UT3... Same meshes I used to make maps in UT3 with...

Having to dodge to the side only (swing mouse 90 degrees to dash 'forward') is an unnecessary and stupid method of movement. Not being able to retain speed via bhop or strafejump is also crappy.

Lol, you have to swing mouse 90 degrees in Quake when you circle jump as well. You should try bunnytrack in ut99, there's cups and divisions and stuff for that. Made me appreciate the movement mechanics after almost a decade of pointless and groundless despise. Co-op bunnytrack is fucking win btw, I recommend it.

There's a reason for moving so much in Quake. It's not like the proper accel angles were arbitrarily thrown into the game - they're based on a mathematical formula, whereas side-dashing was made to be sideways-only intentionally, and is very uncomfortable.

You don't get to fly in UT like in Quake and UT feels jerky, we have established that yes. I've repeated your argument with different words god knows how many times before.

Bunnytrack is UT's equivalent of defrag, although due to the lack of speed it plays more like kz if you know that from CS.

Swing once (not even 90 degrees) and you fly like a free bird.
Swing it once in UT, press double D and after half a second you are knee deep in mud.

Damn, moving should be easier/more intuitive than mashing button combos. It's fun for consoles but not for fps.
